Lets just lump all the crimes under this guy and be done with it... its a free for all ticket pass for any other bag snatcher in the area!?

He is gathering funds for his escape to another part of the country. He is about to go on the run, or he wants to go on a bender and party before returning to jail.

The police have placed Hida, who was wearing a long-sleeved black track suit when he fled, on a national wanted list and are searching for him, suspecting he could be hiding in vacant houses.

But by idiotic law they aren't allowed to enter such vacant houses! So they can only call his name and hope he has a change of heart.

I mean seriously how useless are the police here... this dopey looking criminal was able to escape a police station with 20 cops in it, along the way he committed another crime buy stealing a policeman's shoes on the way out... its like an episode of Dumb and Dumber.... now they have 3000 officers wasting god knows how much tax payer money (conservatively 10000YEN per officer per day is 30MILLION YEN!) looking for this worthless criminal. EVERY crime this guy does on the run is on their hands.... OK rant over... this story is really ticks me off.

I generally agree with you, but these police are paid one way or the other. There are simply way too many police in Japan, it's one of the creepy things about the country that needs changing. At least they have something to do today.

Considering how crime free and safe the country is, I'd say the end result shows that the means are working well. I don't think it needs changing at all.

You are making the assumption that the number of police correlates with safety and the lack of crime. This is almost never the case. The culture is responsible for Japan being relatively safe. The numbers of police are increasing here. The result is wasted tax money and police enforcing increasingly petty laws (like the infamous no dancing laws). Japan badly needs to cut government waste.

Stories like this make me think, what actually goes on at the Japanese Police Academy. What are they actually teaching new recruits? I wonder what would happen if one of them actually had to pull a gun, or take out cuffs or (gasp***) go out on patrol once in a while.

Well you say that, but it can just as easily be said that you are assuming that the culture is responsible for the lack of crime.

Maybe it's correlation, and not causation, but Japan is very crime free, and has a lot of police. I personally am ok with this.

It could be just as easily said, I agree. But I am pretty sure that if you take the time to look into it, you'll change your mind. Either way, this case doesn't make them look good - which is why they are out in such force.

Errmm, apologies if I am stating the obvious here, but if you don't want to give prisoners the opportunity to instantly blend into the crowd if they escape, how about making bright yellow jumpsuits as standard issue wear?

On a more serious note, this guy is a rapist, not just some purse snatcher. He presents a real threat while on the loose.

Hida apparently smashed an acrylic partition in their meeting room

On one news station it was reported that the acrylic partition had missing screws (which the police were going to fix - but never got round to) and the guy simply pushed himself through a gap and walked out of the police station.

What's Hida's beef?

So, a rapist was left unattended in an unlocked room and walked out of the police station. I shining example of professionalism. Well done J-flops!

Sure the police are to blame, as well as their equipment not being up to date like it should. But i equally blame that total retard of a lawyer who should know better than to listen to a criminal and not inform the police they were done.

@lorem, no matter how twisted it is, defendant's lawyers are just like that. They are paid to defend their clients. I just remember my ex who upon his lawyer's advice declared he got bankrupt because his wife is a foreigner. As if I was living in style and luxury!!

It sounds to me like the lawyer was complicit – being asked by the perp to leave without notifying the police that he was leaving, and then doing so.
