Really? So, this guy is a veteran police officer and 'forgot' he put a loaded gun in his suitcase? That's pretty hard to believe.

As someone who carries a gun I know there is no way he forgot or didn't know it was there. When I don't have my gun I know and when I have it I know. As a former officer he knows the laws and he chose to violate them.

I remember this guy from my years in Thialand a real piece of work and stooge to Lord Thaksin the corrupt x police man who became Prime minister and then got kicked out in a cou de ta and now lives in self imposed exile. He is no turkey but just thinks he is above the law, lets wait and see.

What kind of idiot puts a loaded gun into a suitcase for travel?!? When was the last time you saw a conveyor belt system in an airport treat a suitcase with gentle white glove service? Can you imagine if that gun had gone off while in-transit through the airport or during heavy turbulence because something inside the suitcase rustled its way onto the trigger? Of course there was no mention if the gun had a safety engaged or whether it was being transported with a trigger lock and in a proper gun travel case in which it STILL SHOULD HAVE BEEN UNLOADED.

I think we need to find out if this ""friend"" he recd the gun from is in Japan or not for starters!

Cant be many people in Japan who can give hand guns as a present!

GLAD the gun WAS found & the guy busted, for once security seems to have worked! Now if he came into Japan with the gun..........

Ex-cop fro Thailand LEAVING Japan WITH a hand gun!!!

It is all odd! I would have thought that Thailand it would be easier to just do the business there.

The stuff people still dare to bring on a plane is quite shocking. I recommend following @TSA on instagram to see what some people try to bring aboard heh

Was trying to sell the gun here through some of his former "contacts", but got cold feet, would be my guess.

@seawolf, if that's the case, then he was able to smuggled it in undetected? Strange!

Not that incredible. There are no security checks of your carry on luggage at arrival airports, it's up to the security screening at the departure airport. So lax security in Thailand allowed him to smuggle the gun in, but he was caught by Japanese security on the way out. So Japan is holding up their end of the bargain at least.

Camronwitless.

I wonder if they will throw the the book at him, make an example of him, and give this moron severe jail time?

Thailand is pretty gunned up.

I find it incredible that you can fly into Japan with a gun in a suitcase, (thats ok) but they only spotted it when he was leaving, so is it ok to have a hand gun in a suit case at any time? Me think something is very wrong here, and a chief copper, well he should have known the law better! is this one of these diplomatic oversights and will it be hushed up and covered over?

What a plonker. Would this waste incineration technology transfer involve any brown envelopes?

I actually do not understand why there is no screening of carry on luggage at arrival, it would just require to have one of those xray scanners at the emigration desk and will make certain nobody is importing illegal weapon in the country.

Immigration lines are large already, having to essentially re-screen everyone as they enter Japan will just add more time and misery to a trip. Not withstanding, that's assuming they have it in their bag and not their body, unless you are suggesting, they install scanners to check people as they come in as well.

Any case, here's another point, HE WAS ON A PLANE GOING TO JAPAN WITH A LOADED GUN. How about the security in Thailand?

@KnowBetter

Agreed on the rest of your arguments (should be unloaded, have safety on, have a trigger lock, etc.). But on this one point: the trigger pressure for a double-action revolver is usually pretty heavy. It's HIGHLY unlikely that any random object in a suitcase could both slip past the trigger guard AND complete the action of the weapon. Not that anyone should be taking these sort of risks, though.

At least he didn't put it in a box labeled "toy necklace". Although I feel sorry for him if it's not illegal in Thailand and it was truly an error of the mind, an unaccounted for weapon is not something to have in planes and airports. And lastly did he come into Japan with this gun in his bag without them knowing as well? Someone's gunna lose their job...
