Ex-Toyama cop held over murder of elderly couple

Toyama prefectural police on Sunday searched the house of an ex-police officer who was arrested Saturday on suspicion of killing an elderly couple and then setting their apartment on fire in 2010.

According to police, the suspect -- former assistant inspector Takeshi Kano, 54 -- is accused of strangling Saburo Fukuda, 79, and his wife Nobuko, 75, at their residence in Toyama City on April 20, 2010. Fuji TV reported that Kano was believed to owe Fukuda, who was a moneylender, about 2 million yen.

Kano has admitted to the crime and said he torched the apartment to make it look like the Fukudas had died in a fire, Fuji TV reported.

Local media in Toyama reported that Kano knew the Fukudas for about 30 years and that he was also an active member in the local community. Prefectural police said that Kano had received 10 merit awards in his career. He tendered his resignation from the police force in July. In September, it was revealed that Kano had leaked information to a suspect in another crime.

Meanwhile, Toyama police superintendent Yasuo Niimi addressed a gathering of senior Toyama police chiefs on Sunday, NHK reported. Niimi said there will have to be a drastic review of police governance procedures to make sure such a crime never happens again.

A good start would be that people who become police officers are qualified.

Anyway, I wonder what kind of sentence this man will get.

I guess this miserable bastard had a pachinko habit . He had known the victims for 30 years, Cops and ex-cops should set an example, now an example should be made of him......give him 30 years !

Yes they should make an example out of this nut. But give him 30 years for murdering a couple and torching their house? I believe the rope is more appropriate in this case for such a heinous crime.

From incompetence to murder... This is an all time low for J cops.

The title EX-cop is carefully engineered. Sure he is an ex-cop now and it looks much better, but he wasn't when he did the crime back in April.

He was a fully-fledged and decorated police offcer.
