Fake schoolgirl prostitution extortion ring busted by Tokyo police

By Casey Baseel, SoraNews24

In August, a 30-something office worker was in Tokyo’s Shibuya neighborhood when a 16-year-old first-year high school student made him an offer. “Let’s go to a hotel,” she said to the man, who’d never met her before, following up the solicitous offer by saying “I want 15,000 yen.”

That seemed like an attractive price to the man, but as you might expect, the bargain wasn’t struck with the intent of a research trip to further the girl’s education and interest in the hospitality industry. So they didn’t head to a fancy luxury hotel, but rather to one of Shibuya’s back-alley love hotels, which rent rooms by the hour to amorous couples. But as the pair entered their room, things suddenly got very crowded as a group of four teen boys also forced their way inside what the man had thought was going to be a space for two.

However, the boys weren’t a band of chivalrous guardian angels out to save the young lady from selling her body and self-respect. Instead, they were her accomplices, and they quickly launched into the extortion scheme they had planned out before the girl asked the man to take her to a hotel. “You’re finished, dude!” they told the man. “We’ve got pictures of you!”

It’s not clear whether or not the man agreed to purchase their silence, and if so how much it cost him. However, the Tokyo Metropolitan Police have now put an end to the operation and arrested the five teens. The group admitted that the girl went out as bait with the boys waiting nearby and tailing the target to the hotel, where they’d then force him to pay up if he didn’t want his underage prostitution attempt exposed. Reports refer to the teen boys, who are about 17 years old, as being “unemployed,” implying that they’re not enrolled in school (Japanese compulsory education stops after the ninth grade).

Also unclear is whether or not the man himself is facing any charges, as outright prostitution in banned in Japan, as are erotic services performed by a 16-year-old, though ostensibly, he could be claiming ignorance of the girl’s age at the time and denying that the 15,000 yen was meant as a gift, not for services rendered.

It’s the prostitution ring that was fake - there was no prostitution.

Why is the word “fake”

used in the headline?

Was the girl a fake schoolgirl?

Yes, that's the logical inference after reading the article in which it clearly states this was an extortion ring and not a prostitution ring.

10 ( +11 / -1 )

Was the girl a fake schoolgirl?

Read it again but don't stop at 'schoolgirl'. It was a supposed 'schoolgirl prostitution ring' that was fake. There was no prostituting by the schoolgirl, just extorting.

And people thought that high school girls here were so innocent!

They are (mostly). This technique of ripping off "clients" has been going on for years - I think it used to be called oyajigari. It's as old as the hills.

8 ( +8 / -0 )

Everyone going on about paedophiles etc, but isn't 16 above the age of consent in Japan?

Not if you pay them. But you are right that people scream pedo anytime somebody is with an underage girl. A 16 year old, especially one hustling a guy on the street, is a very different thing.

8 ( +8 / -0 )

Personally, I'd rather be in a fake schoolgirl prostitution ring than a real schoolgirl prostitution ring.

6 ( +7 / -1 )

Everyone going on about paedophiles etc, but isn't 16 above the age of consent in Japan?

also anyone who picks up a magazine with classified ads for deri heru and similar will see they are riddled with schoolgirl or other "young" woman offers.

The issue here is the extortion, not the goods on "offer".

6 ( +8 / -2 )

I can't say I feel very sorry for him.

You might when a man in your family is hooked by such a scam.

they probably can't psychological emotionally be attached to an adult woman, so they resort to crimes against children

He resorted to nothing. He was minding his own business when this girl smacked him with temptation. Entrapment is a cruel practice that lassos people operating within the limits they were ordered and yanks them across the line. And this is generally done by people just enjoy destroying anyone they can lasso...people with no actual morals or care for justice. Scum do that whether they can get money out if directly or not.

And men don't generally get emotionally attached to "adult" prostitutes either. That mean there is something wrong with them too?

BB: Is this what yu want to hear: The headline was horribly written?

It should be "Fake schoolgirl prostitution ring busted for extortion. Give Soranews a break, it's not exactly WaPo or The Times (London or New York.)

4 ( +6 / -2 )

Read it again but don't stop at 'schoolgirl'. It was a supposed 'schoolgirl prostitution ring' that was fake.

Err... The schoolgirl was real.

The extortion ring was real.

The schoolgirl extortion ring was real.

Read it again.

Nothing was fake.

Dude, come on. Look at the headline again.

Fake schoolgirl prostitution extortion ring busted by Tokyo police

You see the word 'schoolgirl prostitution' before 'extortion', right? That was the fake part.

Fake schoolgirl prostitution extortion ring busted by Tokyo police

Maybe the editor should have inserted a comma in between 'prostitution and extortion'

Fake schoolgirl prostitution, extortion ring busted by Tokyo police

3 ( +3 / -0 )

Why don't they just say that this was a blackmail trap and the girl was a siren or a plant?

3 ( +3 / -0 )

It says prostitution extortion ring.

The extortion part makes it real.

There must be some native speakers of English on this board.

Help me out here.

yeah there’s plenty of us here and we’re all telling you the same thing.

There never was any prostitution and there never was going to be. That’s the fake part. It was an extortion ring based around a fake prostitution scam. Hence the headline ‘fake prostitution extortion ring’.

Poorly phrased? Eh, maybe. Incorrect? Nope.

2 ( +4 / -2 )

Whoops forgot the word ‘schoolgirl’ but it doesn’t change anything in my point.

2 ( +3 / -1 )

So what would a real schoolgirl prostitution extortion ring look like and how would it be different from a fake one?

Maybe with a real prostitution extortion ring, the girl would have slept with him and then extorted him, which would differ from a fake prostitution extortion ring in that she didn't sleep with him before they tried to extort him.

But that's irrelevant as we aren't talking about a real prostitution extortion ring, we're talking about a fake prostitution extortion ring.

2 ( +3 / -1 )

So what would a real schoolgirl prostitution extortion ring look like and how would it be different from a fake one?

oh gee, I don’t know... maybe one where the schoolgirl was actually a prostitute and not faking it?

2 ( +3 / -1 )

I’m honestly shocked at all the men declaring how weak men are, and the shifting of blame from “I’m horny and entitled” to “I can’t help it, man! It’s my genetics to want to have sex ... with young teens ... and pay for it.”

You were right up though "weak men", but all the stuff after was something you just made up. Nobody said anything of the kind.

I have seen lots of self-righteous men with high standards crack when faced with enough temptation on a regular basis. Almost all of them, in fact. It's a sad fact of life. Better to understand men than to put your guy on a pedestal so he can fall off.

2 ( +2 / -0 )

And while I don’t expect any of my male relatives are in any way interested in having sex with children

She is 16 years old. That is a typical age of consent in the world. Its the most common age of consent in the U.S.A. It is the minimum age of marriage in Japan. It was within the legal marriage age in the U.S.A. in most states until just a few years ago. She is certainly old enough to bear children. She isn't a child. She is a young woman. Just because she cannot legally be a prostitute is NOT the evidence that she is a child. And being attracted to her is NOT the evidence of someone being a sick deviant.

Laws were broken here and that's all. Stop trying to make this into something it isn't.

2 ( +2 / -0 )

“ostensibly, he could be claiming ignorance of the girl’s age at the time and denying that the 15,000 yen was meant as a gift, not for services rendered”

Substitute denying for claiming and it makes perfect sense.

1 ( +1 / -0 )

You are saying that it is not the fault of an adult man that he can’t say “no” to sex with a young girl.

By extrapolation, you are saying that men can’t control their sexual urges even when those urges are inappropriate?

I would say that everyone involved has some degree of fault.

The man, most likely knowing the girl was underage and engaging in prostitution, should have refused the offer and could maybe even offered her some wise advice to stop her dangerous activities or even threatened to get her parents or police involved. He deserves appropriate punishment. Accepting such an offer was very foolish.

The girl and her accomplices are old enough to bear responsibility for thier shakedown activities and ought to be punished and counselled accordingly with a view to straightening thier lives out.

1 ( +3 / -2 )

It's wrong to exploit a man's weakness by tempting them.

It's of course also wrong for men to engage in inappropriate acts with minors.

It's not really clear from the article whether he was entrapped. We would need more details to determine that. One would have to know what he was doing when he was approached.

But men who are honest know they are genetically programmed to be weak in this way. The best way to avoid trouble is to avoid circumstances that might offer temptation.

Also, I'd say better than even odds that the boys she worked with would happily pimp her out if they thought they could.

1 ( +2 / -1 )

Tokyo, your city is insane and out of control, this is one my reasons why I don't want to come back home to japan because of the problems japanese girls born and raised in Tokyo, Japan are causing and something they should and shouldn't be doing period!

If a Japanese schoolgirl offers to have sex with you, say no. Problem solved. I think it's safe for you to come back now.

1 ( +2 / -1 )

girl in tokyo:

So because it isn't illegal to have sex with a 16 year old girl, that makes it okay for adult men to have sex with a 16 year old girl.

Well, at least we know where your moral ground lies.

The article is not about morality, it is about a crime. And morality is very different depending on society and belief system. At 16 she is old enough to legally marry a guy, and it that case you could safely assume they have sex. Would that be within your "moral ground" or outside of it? In case of the latter, Japanese law must be very immoral.

1 ( +1 / -0 )

Chip Star - Yes, that's the logical inference after reading the article in which it clearly states this was an extortion ring and not a prostitution ring.

Therefor, the word 'fake' is not necessary in the headline.

0 ( +2 / -2 )

I had no difficulties understanding this article and it was reasonably straight forward to me. I think we are putting too much emphasis on the precise English and forgetting the message. ... The guy picked up what he probably thought was a young prostitute, an offence in Japan if he had traded money. Then he was blackmailed, another offence regardless if the blackmailers were paid.

0 ( +1 / -1 )

Misleading headline. It is not clear what the "fake" refers to. The schoolgirl and the extortion were real, I suppose one could call the prostitution fake, but it certainly existed as a concept in the extortion scheme.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

The girl may have tried this out on twenty or thirty men before she hooked this one, and he was a fool for falling for it, thinking that his cosplay wet dreams were about to come true. Probably the uniform rather than any specific age.

But if a fish swims into a net set up for just such a purpose, should we not be blaming the people who cleverly set the net there?

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Well, at least we know where your moral ground lies.

I think morality is systems created so that people can get along happily and peacefully in fairness and respect for one another. Your ideas look more like oppression for the sake of indulging in self-righteousness and superiority complex to me.

What really hammers that home is how you have had so little to say about the fraud and extortion aspect of this matter to focus on men's sexual interests. In fact, when you said you did not feel sorry for the guy, it sounded like you ranged from neutral to positive concerning fraud and extortion and I find that stance highly immoral.

Fact is, when I see someone focus on the body of contrived sexual morality and ignore the much more solid body of social morality, I tend to think that someone knows and cares nothing of morality at all really.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

It's a Chupa Chups business.

Sense it and ignore it before you're caught in the tangling web.

-1 ( +1 / -2 )

And people thought that high school girls here were so innocent!

-1 ( +2 / -3 )

In English, the adjective applies to the last noun, this case being ring. It was not a fake ring.

That's a fair point by Burning Bush. And Sceptical rightly suggested a comma to solve the problem. I believe a hyphen could also come to the rescue. So we could have instead "schoolgirl fake-prostitution extortion ring"

You were right up though "weak men", but all the stuff after was something you just made up. Nobody said anything of the kind.

The girl is a teenager, she offered sex for money, and these guys were saying it was not the man's fault that he gave into the temptation of paying for sex with a teen. The reason they gave is because it's genetics for men to give in to temptation when offered sex. So yeah, actually, they did say that.

I have seen lots of self-righteous men with high standards crack when faced with enough temptation on a regular basis. Almost all of them, in fact. It's a sad fact of life. Better to understand men than to put your guy on a pedestal so he can fall off.

Do you think women are never tempted and this is only a problem that men face? This is belied by the fact that many women have also been arrested for sex with young teen boys. They are, very rightly, arrested and tried for it and spend time in jail. Deservedly.

Or maybe you just think men just have less self-control overall than women, which, again, makes me wonder why men so often have such a low opinion of other men.

Better to understand men than to put your guy on a pedestal so he can fall off.

I think it's pretty funny that you would think, after reading my posts, that I put men on a pedestal.

Seriously, how many of the feminists you know put men on a pedestal?

And why do you think that holding men to a high standard of behavior and asking them to take responsibility for their choices instead of blaming genetics and crying "I couldn't help it" is akin to putting them on a pedestal?

No, I wouldn’t.

And while I don’t expect any of my male relatives are in any way interested in having sex with children, if I learned they were I’d immediately disown them and hope they got the book thrown at them.

let me get this strait, so the group of teenage guys are doing what the police should be doing to catch the pedophiles and "30-something" men from paying young girls for sex, and the police is making them as the criminals and the "30-something" man as a victim?

and they are protecting the "30-something" man's identity? and not charging him because:

he could be claiming ignorance of the girl’s age at the time and denying that the 15,000 yen was meant as a gift, not for services rendered.*

did I get it wrong? or he is angry that she wasn't a real school girl and the news are emphasizing on this?
