It is reported that the father had not trouble in his social life at companies. He worked at Okinawa Tourist Bureau's Tokyo Office. His cruelty to her own daughter is very difficult to understand. Is cruelty a part of human nature as there is a word sadist? I occasionally find cruel persons in the society.

The death of this poor child has hopefully shined a light on the abuse far too many other children are subjected to daily!

The scary part of this is that the father here thought nothing was wrong with his actions, until his daughter died due to his abuse.

Agreed. That said, I'm not holding my breath for any change given this isn't the first time something like this had happened.

Investigators said they have analyzed video footage and photo images that showed Mia with bruises, crying, and forced to stand for long periods.

Wait, the guy took videos of him abusing his daughter ? What videos are these ?

Stupid system, as simple as that.

While government officials who ignored the girl’s pleas for help walk free and point fingers.

How this doomed child was returned to this abusive home, is a clear picture of what needs to change.

Completely ignorant and indifferent to her abuse, the "social services" agency workers were "intimidated" by this man, yet sent this child back to live there.

Abusers are often fine in their interactions with people they see outside of the home. It is only towards the victims that they show their true colours. They are also often master liars and manipulators. This is why people often doubt the victims when they speak up: "But he's such a nice guy? What did you do to upset him?" etc.

This poor child was going through hell, and nobody helped her.

Its for people like this, that the Japanese justice system makes sense. If it was a 'western' justice system, this guy would be out on bail and his lawyers would be doing everything they can to get him off scott-free.

But unfortunately, for people like this, the Japanese confinement system probably still wont work. Real scumbags can be kept in confinement without lawyers and subjected to weeks/months of pressure to confess, and wont say a peep.

I’m deeply saddened and disgusted to think about what this poor little girl had to endure before her death at the hands of her so-called ‘father’. There is a huge problem in Japan with violence towards kids, which is almost always fished out some kind of twisted disciplinary action. Discipline is discipline. Violence is violence. And, abuse is abuse. They are not the same although, there seems to be no difference between them for many Japanese parents. Yesterday morning while I was reading the government report stating they will make physical punishment illegal in Tokyo, the woman siting right in front of me smacked her 7-8 year old son in the head for being noisy on the train. She smacked him very hard too. That it child abuse. It is not discipline. This scenario is very commonplace among Japanese families. I saw a father nearly knockout his mid-teen son in a restaurant a few years ago by smacking him so hard on the head he actually got dizzy. No doubt this kid had been the victim of this abuse many times in the past as well. People have to understand that, it is not ok to hit kids, EVER!

There is a type of people, who pretends to be nice in the work place. Partly, because they are also cowards, do not dare to do anything to offend others; besides smiling and submissive to coworkers. However, when they return home, they would turn their angers on children, without any reason. If a child is not happy in school, let alone bruises on her body; the environment of her family must be very terrible; that must be caught up by her teachers. He needs to be locked up very long.

Oh boy, he's not going to have a nice trip in the slammer. He deserves every minute of it though

You see? He was not punished before and was given the chance to do it again, condoned by government and Community alike, and now the girl is dead. This is what happens when you pass toothless laws with no punishment and fob off responsibility on everyone else. Hoping it won't happen again is not a resolution.

Along with any other punishments he should be castrated --- not to keep him from reproducing, but to remind him, every time he looks down, that he wore the mantle of fatherhood so lightly.

What is happening with all this violence and abusing against children.

I agree that such elements need time in prison and face the justice, but any deterrent that it will be taken, even chemical castration which I totally disagree simply because is a mortification of human dignity won't solve the problem.

Draconian punishment won't change these people mind, the government in my point of view should work on the education,on preaching to respect children and women.

Only a good education in human values can really reduce such terrible events.

Definition of a son/daughter: A son/daughter is a living being that GOD lend us to make an intensive course of learning how to love someone more than ourselves. In how to change our worst defects in order to offer him/her the very best samples of life and, for us, learn to have the courage in doing so. Being a father/mother is the highest act of courage that anyone could have because it's to explain in detail all types of pain, primarily the incertitude in how to act appropriately and the tragedy of losing someone so dearest. One might ask - Lose? How? He or she is not ours? It was scarcely a loan...The most precious and marvelous loan, for him/her is ours only when they are unable to value for themselves. Once they do, then they belong to life, to destiny and to their own families. GOD bless always our children since HE already blessed us with them.

And this man is wrong on so many levels that he deserves worst than what poor Mia suffered. RIP little Angel!
