Most developed countries have a lot of work to do regarding human trafficking and exploitation of children. Japan, however, has the extra hurdle of actually acknowledging it has a problem.

@Chip Star

i can agree with what you say. Human trafficking and child exploitation are a huge problem all over the world.

Many crimes against women and children here go unreported because people are afraid to talk about it and there is a lack of support for the victims.

Look no further than the popularity of AKB. It is selling sexuality of under aged girls to lonely pedophile... Please do something about it.

@dangobongo

I thought the same thing. But I guess IAP can use the Olympics to promote their cause, which seemed to make more sense.

Any establishment offering sexual services does so to a mainly Japanese clientele.

The only thing that will increase in Tokyo during the Olympics will be the ‘no foreigner’ signs and the odd foreigner here and there committing some faux pas like not carrying a passport at all times.

Japanese have more money than the tourists who will come and it will cost $1000+ for a plane ticket to get here. AND there are only two ways to get out. Like a mouse trap.

Yes, if the tourist were coming from third World countries.

You believe tourists who are coming to Tokyo, Japan (one of the most expensive tourist cities in Asia) during the Olympics are poorer than most of the local Japanese living in Tokyo (surrounding areas) or coming to the cities to find work. You make absolutely no sense!

The only places in the world where most of the local people are richer than the tourist are small oil producing countries like Dubai. You are living in a Japanphile fantasy land!

If the Japanese are wealthier than the tourists then why do they need tourist dollars especially from the Chinese.

AND there are only two ways to get out. Like a mouse trap.

So, even though other world sporting events have been plagued with such situations, Japan is somehow spared to this because of your illogical statement about the wealth of the Japanese compared to the tourists that visit.

It makes no logical sense at all, there is bigger money elsewhere and Japan is an island with limited exits.

Yet, you just said that the Japanese are richer than the tourists. Which is it? The Japanese are richer than the tourists, but not rich enough for criminal organizations to setup shop?

Who is bringing in all those Chinese, Korean, Filipino, Thai and Japanese sex workers? Who is sponsoring their entertainment visas? Who is hiring 18+ and 18 Japanese girls at their establishments?

Have all these easily researchable events been a figment of our imaginations?

@Silvafan

I imagine that you are right. The article should have explained that a little more clearly, though.

From the title, I imagined that there was some trafficking in child athletes or something.

Here's a signal. If you live in a country where a school children's uniform have been sexualized, then you can be assured that childhood Trafalgar and child prostitution are happening. The signs are everywhere but people deny them.

Who says they’re lonely?

AKB selling sexuality of under aged girls, but who cares to stop? Govt.?

Large-scale sporting events attract a huge influx of tourists who flock to host cities, and it is claimed that criminal organizations follow, looking to cash in through the exploitation of vulnerable children who are pushed into the commercial sex trade or by trafficking them into forced labor.

Is this supposed to mean that a 2 week sporting event attracts tourists and therefore child traffickers will come to exploit all the foreigners here?

Makes no sense at all....

"If you educate people who are attending the event about the signs to look out for, and that's labor as well as sexual exploitation, it is happening everywhere. But unless we talk about it we think it is not happening."

What are the signs??

What are the signs!?

Makes plenty of sense! Large groups of people with cash to spend means criminals will have opportunities to make money like legal businesses. Drugs and sex are recession proof businesses. Sex workers will be brought to Tokyo to make money off the tourists and locals who want to party hard during the Olympics. Some of the sex workers are willing participants and others are not!

Selling sexuality and selling sex are not the same thing.

Wouldn't take whats written in this article to seriously, Japan's still a very safe place with a lot of the people who work in the "redlight" industry there in a voluntary basis - as for the influx of "redlight" workers during the Olympics and Rugby World Cup and if the numbers are correct these people would be there for easy money over the short period that these event are held.

 Why would they?

I remember when the World Cup came to Japan in 2005 and they cleaned up Hinedecho area of Yokohama.  I am all for stamping out the exploitation of children and people who may be forced to do that kind of thing, but there are some, like it or not who did chose to work in that industry who get caught up in these clean ups and that makes them more vulnerable to be exploited by those who traffic in persons.

So glad to learn measures are being taken, but unfortunately Japan holds over 33% of the sex/adult industry worldwide. Fat chance if IAP is to trust and/or count with local entities to intercede at a large scale. The market is too lucrative for Japan and they rather turn a blind eye. Hypocrites at work.

Agree with Bugle Boy oh Company B

There is a lost opportunity right there!

Hey let's risk our lives and spend $1000 on a plane ticket to go to Japan, because there might be a bunch of tourists with $1000 in their wallets. We can abduct their kids!

I still do not see the logic. Japanese have more money than the tourists who will come and it will cost $1000+ for a plane ticket to get here. AND there are only two ways to get out. Like a mouse trap.

Please explain again...
