lol, only in Japan do men need to be educated about NOT hitting babies around when they cry.

People get a driving lic. to drive for public safety, and yet couples are bringing a human being into this world without any permissions or check ups, and when they fail we the people are carrying their burden and paying for their mistakes.

Men have parental leave in this country. They can just use it, so they'll spend more time with their wife and baby.

Yes I know employees can not even take all their holidays in this country because of boss/peer pressure but if they start standing up for their rights, they will win.

The question is: do they want it, or are they happy doing long hours and nomikai away from their family?

Same for women: do they also want this change to happen?

Education? Yes! Don't have children if you have no idea what it means to look after another human being!

What about all the Japanese mothers who flush their newborn baby down the toilet?

8 ( +17 / -9 )

It's not a matter of educating new fathers.

4 ( +5 / -1 )

Education? So funny. Why make this like it's not their fault because they are not educated about how to treat a little baby?

5 ( +10 / -5 )

what a "excuse"...dunno what to say.

what kind of "education" that guy mean?

The recent arrest of a man who allegedly hit his one-month-old daughter in the head leading to her death last year has highlighted the urgent need for better support and education for fathers

I'm sorry, did I just read that a grown man has to be educated on why he should NOT physically hit a baby??!

Paternal abuse in some cases has been attributed to a phenomenon known as papa mishiri in Japan, roughly translating to "daddy aversion."

Of course Japan would coin a name for this instead of actually doing something about it. Ridiculous. At this point they may as well kiss their declining birth rate goodbye because it'll soon whittle into extinction.

Didn't you hear, that's just post natal depression, it's the evil men that need to be educated.

Sex ed and Family Resources should be mandatory courses in schools……

No wait.

You “can’t make money from them” and both are “women’s jobs.”

Forget about ti. Both are too logical and are solutions to the problem. It’ll never happen……

……Oh look, discounted Olympics uniforms on sale!

2 ( +5 / -3 )

What if papa mishiri is passed down through generations, with subtle (but perceptive to the young child) othering of the father? To what extent might this be an emotional reflex in a society that condones practices like tanshinfunin 単身赴任?

Bad parenting is a maternal and paternal issue. All couples who want to be parents should be required to get a license like driving. The certification course should be offered free of charge by the government. Bad parenting is cultural. It is passed on from parent to child. The only way the cycle is broken is if the wannabe parent is aware of the faults of their upbringing and make a conscious/sincere effort to change. The alternative is a third-party stepping in and forcing the would-be parent to change. Think about the all the terrible acts that people commit in society that are directly related to their mommy ad daddy issues. Requiring certifications to have children would improve the society as whole.

I think it would very much depend on age as I expect (I have no proof) that very young babies respond to smell and if the baby is only used to their mothers smell they will be wary of others. Having worked with very young children they almost all cry when I first meet them but holding them over time seems to work.

Older children do stick to their mothers and it takes at least until they are two for that to change. My neighbours kid cried every time I said hello and has only just got over it.

My concern of todays culture is that many children have spent the first two years of their lives only seeing strangers masked and I can see that as being a very long term issue for the future.

As for men killing their children its a tiny tiny amount of loons and normal people, fathers do not need anything but more time with their kids and not just Sundays. Children need more males role models at nurseries/schools because how can any child grow up properly if they only experience a female dominated childhood.

You only have to sit in a classroom for 30 minutes to observe that.

Enough with this nonsense of making new 'cute' terms for everything.

It's not 'papa mishiri' that needs treating, they need to work back and find out why so many people are stressed out, irritable, and prone to flipping out.

Hmm...could it be the work culture and lack of mental health support?

If they seriously want to address the issue, then they need to open these cans of worms.

Bad parenting is passed through generations of family members making it cultural. The culture of that home or family just like the culture at the office.

Not only that, but it can be an effective form of birth control. If people knew what they were getting into, they would think twice before being irresponsible especially younger people. It would reduce the number of unwanted births possibly reducing the number of abortions and abuse from unfit parents. That would also put less of a strain on child services that must take care of these unwanted or abused children.

There is so much to unpack in this article. One, and this a fact that many Japanese do not want to seem to admit, is that most abusers were abused (not that this is an excuse, it isn't, but it is part of the reason). The cycle of violence is generational and hard to break. Two, social services is pathetic here. We've all seen the stories of the welfare agents being turned away and not doing follow-ups. My mother was the housing commissioner for a long time. If one of her agents got refused, they were coming back with the police. Another thing is humans are physically able to reproduce long before they are mentally able. So much for the "intelligent design" theory.

But the main thing, I think, is the speed and convenience that modern technology has given us. Nobody has patience anymore, and children require patience. Almost anything can be gotten and anyone contacted instantly. People can't wait anymore. I've seen people lose it when they don't get a response on Line within 30 seconds. Over a minute is an eternity for some folks. But, hey, guess what? A baby will not stop crying in 30 second. It may take more than a minute. It may even take more than an hour. A baby does not have an off button or a manner mode. You have to wait and then maybe get 30 seconds of calm before it starts all over again. "I hit her because she would not stop crying." OK, big man. How long was she crying? I'd venture that it was 5 minutes and he could not take it. I rant, but these people disgust me. I have been blessed, BLESSED, with two children. I have two brothers, both better men than me, who for various medical reasons do not have children. Whenever someone gifted a child abuses that privilege, I have a visceral reaction.

I have my 3 months old son, he smiles every single time he sees me, I give him his shower every other day, I made a point of only working outside 3 days/week every since he was born.

I’m present on every vaccination day, he stops crying 10 seconds after each shot.

I must hug him a thousand times a day and I cannot even imagine our lives otherwise.

If most people can’t afford to work at home, every single father was supposed to get paternity leave, at least for the first 3 months.

I’ve worked in japanese companies before and seen with my own eyes what the people here call “life”: staying the whole day in the office until late hours and dropping tired on weekends. You gotta be kidding. Poor children.

Japanese mothers even more dangerous than fathers. As I get from recent news. Japanese mothers are too immature mentally to give birth only mature physically.

They are too uneducated to consult and take help from others in emergency as a result many newborn die on the 1st day.

There was a case yesterday a 30+ women doesn't consult hospital after giving birth at home for 4 days and baby died. Notna minimum commonsense Japanese women got.

Of course a lack of education is no excuse for violence toward an infant, or anyone else. But more education about parenthood will better prepare parents for the greatest job in the world. Dads need to know what to do when left alone with an infant that won't stop crying.

However, the main responsibility of teaching parenthood should not fall on the government, it should fall on future parent's own parents who set the sample for generations to come. They should also give support to the new parents as much as possible.

Education? Isn’t that easiest common logic to treat another human just not worse than you are treated by other humans? Does a baby shake you dead, throw you around against wall or ground or flushes you down a toilet? No? Really? Are you sure? Ok, then also ever do not such similar bad things with a baby. I allow you to sometimes cry back of course. That’s a funny hint. Sometimes the baby or toddler is then astonished when parents do such an unexpected behavior and immediately stops itself crying. lol

A training course, test, and certification should be required before permission to have a child is granted. Some people are just not suitable to be a parent.

Urgent need of education for the justice system to arrest the man just recently for a crime he committed last year because its almost next year already.

Domestic abuse of family members and child abuse in Japan is aweful.

The article is about Japan so iam not comparing other nations .

Education must include ethics.

The average Japanese can't understand why Human Rights And free speech should be granted to people.

Paternal violence against newborns shows urgent need for education

I am not a all sure that an "education" program would change those morons with low impulse control who punch babies. Any normal person who just holds a baby immediately notice how fragile they are.

Seriously, you do not see a problem with your brilliant solution? I.e. what do you want to do about the law-breakers ---- forced abortion? Something else?

just because ppl can have children doesn't mean they should.

If parents were educated in child rearing, we probably could fix most of society's issues. it all starts when ppl are children.but this idealism

not so distant future we may see ppl needing a license to have children.

think about how many bad ppl have children and just ruin their children lifes.

It's a consequence of low birth rate : infrastructures, counsellors ... are insufficient.

Parental education have been abandoned by the officials of this country.

Paternal violence against newborns shows that women should stop reproducing with random chimpiras.

I'm relieved most people in the comments section seems to have common sense.

Sadly, Japan is a country with an extreme amount of severe mental health cases that go untreated, due to the labyrinth of taboos their society holds on to. Also, it looks like it's the country with one of the lowest (if not THE lowest) communication rates in the "civilized" world, as in people don't communicate with each other apart from tatemae-level essential interactions, so primitive crimes like this make headlines every single day (not even mentioning the majority that stays unreported...).

It's honestly shocking reading the newsletter of Japantoday, I've never seen such gruesome crimes happening systematically in any other first world country. Worst of all, things in Japan change very slowly, so I'm not expecting mental health care or communication skills to thrive over there for at least a few decades more...Sad.

Oh, that's just the style of reporting in Japan. Only an idiot would think things are worse here than in other countries. They just don't report on these things as much in other nations - there has never been a civilization in humanity where such a thing has not existed.

What you "see" is what is in the news. And in other big nations there is enough bloodshet to fill the news, they do not even need to resort to family violence. The media massively distort your view. Of course they do not report about the millions of people who live happy uneventful lifes here every day.

Dont be angry when suddenly he does not. They go through stages. I think the Japanese word for this is hitomishire. They all get that at some point, it goes away.

Inexperienced fathers but loads of experience to produce a child!! I don't get it!

Education will prevent these senseless cases of violence. Educating toddlers to quietly behave and not add to the stress that young families face is the best way to curtail these incidents and allow for a happy, wholesome family home.

Most Japanese men are insecured and immature when handling child welfare. The younger fathers try...but they too fall short. Ironic though...this particular father has four kids at such young age.

So you have researched "most Japanese men"? That is a big population group. Can we see your data?
