Police said Thursday they have arrested a man for allegedly stabbing to death the female manager of a gentlemen's snack club, Snack Reika, in Kanazawa City, Ishikawa Prefecture, on Wednesday afternoon.

According to TBS, the suspect -- a 69-year-old man -- called police and told them what he had done, and then remained at the scene until police arrived shortly after 5 p.m.

Police found the victim, identified as Reiko Kinoshita, collapsed on the floor with two knives protruding from her body and at least 10 stab and slash wounds around her face, neck and chest. A third knife was found on the floor of the bar.

The suspect told police he was a regular customer at the bar, TBS reported.

I wonder if this was a passion killing?

Gentlemen's snack club? What kind of "gentleman" stabs someone?

7 ( +9 / -2 )

This and many similar stories gives me insight on why j cops are so inexperienced. People often turn themselves in. Or tske THEIR babies to the hospital after REALIZING what they have done. There needs to b a big campaign on how to deal with anger and on the importance of life . This is not 200 years ago. Please stop showing these samurai tv shows or movies. Please stop those old school comic books that kids love reading. They are so degrading to women and life. There should be a more strict law on music, books, and tv (and from what i hear, 20 years ago was much much worse) come on japan move faster!!

-9 ( +7 / -16 )

@agreed but you can not change one's 'culture and nature' so easily.

-7 ( +3 / -10 )

oops..i agree with naruhodo1

-8 ( +3 / -11 )

come on japan move faster!!

Yep, naruhodo1, the country's gotta catch up with the Taliban. Good point.

2 ( +7 / -5 )

69 years old?? with 3 knives? The Laws should be really tougher on Murderers like a mandatory 20 year Prison sentence and Maybe the Tick Tick Boom people would actually hesitate and think a little before commiting such a heinous crime

I was completely expecting a harangue about the evils of the adult entertainment business and how it kills so many, whilst completely overlooking the body counts of marriage and motor vehicles, of course.

But one blaming the TV and manga I have to admit came right out of left field! Did not see it coming! I must be getting old!

Also, I suppose we can blame the monsters that are due on Maple Street. (a great Twilight Zone all us non-paranoids watch closely).

naruhodo1,

and from what i hear, 20 years ago was much much worse)

So, 20 years ago, was this sort of crime more prevalent or less prevalent? The connection between violent (fill in recreational activity here - comics, video games, movies, music) and violence in real life is rock solid, is it?

Utrack,

Bars are known to have knives in their 'kitchen'.

I wonder why the old man snapped and why he isn't being named here. I hope 'I was drunk' is not going to be his excuse. Feel sorry for Kinoshita and her family.

2 ( +4 / -2 )

I feel so sad for this victim, getting killed like this I do hope this criminal nut case psycho well that he gets the DEATH PENALTY and yes that he Burns In Hell For All Of Eternity!!

-7 ( +4 / -11 )

Its a well known fact, but still are people like u that will not admit to the connection. Kids here in Japan are exposed to violence (fill in the blank) at a too young of an age via tv and comic books. When i go into an electronics shop and see a pile of porn next to the cameras. Hardly the Taliban buddy. I recently quit smoking, i watch someone havn a cig on tv and immediately feel like one. And the list goes on. Why do u think so many countries ban adv of tobacco, porn, explicit music on radio, dirty lang on tv... I can go on forever. Its a proven fact that tv ( fill any recreational activity, has a direct influence on humans be it kids or adults BUT even more influencial on our kids!!)

What is a "Snack" bar? It's a place of sorrow and misery. The women that work there prey on the loneliness of Japanese men. At the end of the road some people find themselves alone. This is the pitfall of misery.

Nothing justifies what this man did. However, the women managing such establishment should know good and well what they are guilty of. If you are going to be in the water business, you had better protect yourself.

Gentlemen's snack club = hostess club?

-1 ( +2 / -3 )

Back on topic please.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Soldave, snacks usually exist in smaller cities. But ya, just like hostess club but its not all u can drink for an hour, its more like a bar. U pay an entrance fee that they call seating charge (around 1,500) then u order like normal bar. Young girls will chat with u but they expect u to buy a drink which is why it is advisable to buy a bottle of korean shouchu(they over charge on the bottle, ice, water) Expect to pay 5 or 6 k for 2 hours if ur alone. Talk only (dirty is fine, but not right away)

another day another stabbing.

-2 ( +2 / -4 )

slowly getting like east Los Angeles....in terms of violent crimes.

-1 ( +2 / -3 )

A regular customer stabbing the owner, most probably 1) a long time customer regularly coming and gotten some not-so-good advice 2) a secret admirer who was heartbroken 3) getting annoyed at the owner at being driven away (not getting any other customers)

1 ( +2 / -1 )

i've never heard this type of establishment being referred to as a "club." it's usually a "bar" where men sing karaoke and chat up the (older) female staff who work there. odd title...

NetNinja,

"What is a "Snack" bar? It's a place of sorrow and misery. The women that work there prey on the loneliness of Japanese men. At the end of the road some people find themselves alone. This is the pitfall of misery.

Ummm... No. A snack bar is an establishment that serves alcoholic beverages and, well, snacks, to patrons. You're confusing the term with "Gentlemen's Snack Club," which is more closely associated with Hostess Clubs. Why the writer decided to contrive a decription that is sure to cause confusion is beyond me, but there you go.

The snack bars I go to on occasion are plenty of fun. Everything's above board and there's very little sorrow or misery involved (except maybe when the tab comes at the end of the night).

"Nothing justifies what this man did. However, the women managing such establishment should know good and well what they are guilty of."

You just did. By proclaiming women who work at snacks of being "guilty" of some as-yet undefined crime, you suggest the reasonable expectation of punishment.

You stretch that thinly veiled attack with a claim that the customers who patronize Hostess Clubs are somehow being "preyed" upon. These men are under no illusions of what they are paying for -- or at least they shouldn't be. If they really are coming into these places with a genuine expectation that paying for booze and conversation will somehow lead to them, err... not being lonely anymore, then these mens' problems lie far deeper than their inabiltiy to exert control over their "little head." As evidenced by the man who murdered the bar manager in Kanazawa.

Rest in Peace to the poor lady.

I tell you what, I'm starting to become worried about all the old age pensioners in my neigbourhood. Might just have to start wearing a stab vest around them...

female manager of a gentlemen’s snack club

Or just "mama". This is dangerous profession, anyway.

Another woman stabbed. As a woman it might be better to carry a knife with you at all times for self-protection nowadays. Is pepper spray available here?

2 ( +4 / -2 )

noooooo!! not another one! RIP Kinoshita Reikosan im so sad U_U i hope he gets executed!

-4 ( +0 / -4 )

Is pepper spray available here? Not legally AFAIK, you can get some stun-rods(semi-legal) but no Tazer-guns either.

Said that not that tough to make a "semi pepper-spray" from what you got in the kitchen and carry it in a perfume atomiser. The Ninja managed it centuries ago too. ;)

The connection between violent (fill in recreational activity here - comics, video games, movies, music) and violence in real life is rock solid, is it?

Yes, this 69 yr old snack pillar oyaji was surely a heavy gamer....

1 ( +2 / -1 )

THis attack happened about 10 minutes from my house. The snack was really in a residential area, not the downtown area. Neighborhood gossip says the guy was jealous about her paying attention to some other customer. He had also supposedly given her a large amount of money. Like I said, just neighborhood gossip, but the local obachans seems to know what's happening better than the police.

2 ( +2 / -0 )

too many old guys losing the plot in japan.last week some old guy who lives across the road was urinating outside my house and when I coughed to pont out i was watching him he went in to his house grabbed a big stick and started banging against my apartment.when the cops came they said as they hadnt seen it they couldnt do anything.too many of them with nothing to do but get envious when mixed with shocho is a bad combo

1 ( +1 / -0 )

OK. WHY did he stab her?

1 ( +2 / -1 )

Left 2 kinves sticking out of the body and left a third on the floor next to the body.......three knives....this is not normal even for a psycopath let alone a recreational killer.

1 ( +1 / -0 )

Close down those dumps - havens for crime.

-8 ( +0 / -8 )

just exactly were these guys snacking on that someone would resort to henious crime?

Another woman stabbed. As a woman it might be better to carry a knife with you at all times for self-protection nowadays.......................so she can stab the other lady back if stabbed upon ?

Sounds like 1930's era central Europe is the place for you.

You have to be a little wary about so called snack bars. Many of them will stick you with a heavy tab. I guess he got stuck and she did too. All jokes aside. More information about the reasons behind the stabbing should be forthcoming. Stay with the Izakayas and watch out for unrully patrons who can't hold their liquor. It's not unusual here in Japan.

Wait. Snack club means stripper club right???

0 ( +1 / -1 )

Allison Honig

Wait. Snack club means stripper club right???

No, thankfully not. The women are usually are between 50 and 80.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

They called it a "Gentlemen's Snack Club" to make the patrons feel better, like the strip clubs in the U.S (where probably few act like gentlemen) are called "Gentlemen's Clubs". Snack clubs (gentlemen's or no) are a type of "hostess" club that offer food as well as alcohol. It's the hostess's job to keep the customer happy and entice him into purchasing over-priced food and drink. It's common for the hostess to have a "50/50" deal, meaning they get 1/2 of the profit, with the club's manager. I'm sure some hostesses also work as prostitutes, but many don't and are wives and mothers who could get no other job. They endure because they have to survive.

Having said all of that, yes this seems like a "crime of passion" as indicated by the extreme violence. Maybe she didn't want anything to do with him, and he pulled the "If I can't have you, nobody can" card. Unfortunatelt, because of his age, nothing serious will happen to him.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

should say "Unfortunately"

Sensei, you seems to be very knowlegeable about the clubs..........................

0 ( +0 / -0 )

The assumption you have alluded to is true, but I've never used a hostess for anything. That doesn't mean I didn't take the time to talk to some.

Agreed - but Ive met more than a few white-fellas who are two-pot screamers too! Izakaya are my favourite, but local snacks can be good and reasonable too if they know you and won't rip you off. I've had many a good old yarn and sing along with my lady companions in some of them.

"Sensei, you seems to be very knowlegeable about the clubs.........................."

There isn't too much about the subject that can't be found in books.
