Police in Chigasaki, Kanagawa Prefecture, have arrested a 23-year-old firefighter on suspicion of violating the Cannabis Control Law by allegedly possessing marijuana.
According to police, Hibiki Shibata, who is employed by the Tokyo Fire Department, was caught in possession of a rolled-up marijuana joint near a convenience store in Chigasaki City at around 9:35 p.m. on Aug 21, Sankei Shimbun reported. I always find it amusing to witness the Japanese indulging in the electric Lettuce

Surely there are more important areas of concern in japan, like chikans on trains, than a firefighter smoking a joint to stress down after what must be a pretty stressful job!

Take in the fact that in Japan, a 23 year old getting arrested for Marijuana possession makes the front page of the national newspapers.

From what I heard in Japan even simply legally smoking roll-your-own cigarettes using shag and rolling paper can make you being pat searched. This firefighter just another example.

So this is the antediluvian, never-ending nonsense that we are still expected to put up with from overbearing state authorities who go out of their way to harass useful members of society, in this case a young firefighter who puts his life on the line protecting the public. Why, when most of the Western world has now finally smelled the coffee, does Japanese officialdom kick so hard against changing times and mores and remain stuck in anachronistic, alcohol-fueled time-warp? I just want to scream: Leave them kids alone!

So glad I don't live in Japan anymore when I read these sorts of stories. Pass me my vape please ...

Pot? Who cares?! I HATE having my tax payer money wasted like this.

In all fairness, weed makes you brain dead. If Japanese started toking up the country would fall apart.

In all fairness, weed makes you brain dead.
That all depends on individual intelligence. Weed can't fix stupid.
If Japanese started toking up the country would fall apart.*Debatable, but beyond argument is the scientific fact that alcohol does much more damage to the liver and brain AND to society which has to pick up the enormous tab to treat the many who fall victim to the ravages of the demon bottle. Also to be factored in for a comprehensive picture is the economic and social costs of the unwinnable "War on Drugs" with its selectively enforced punitive Prohibition legislation and policing of the populace to search for untaxed "drugs".

In all truth alcohol is far more a dangerous used recreational. Domestic violence and car crash deaths are not associated with the recreational use of weed

It’s such a stupid situation, was he working? If not then what’s the problem.? 23 is young and probably super fit, what you want first responders to be..if he was on his seventh chu-hi no problem. It’s so stupid I think law makers are totally off their faces and don’t want to share what they are taking.

What does that mean EXACTLY? Was he like twitching and sniffing the joint while smiling with crazy look in his eyes while being illuminated by light from the convenience store? And what was he doing with a joint near a convenience store? Did he need a bright place to smoke it because he is afraid of the dark? Or is this a location where joints are sold?
dan
This is not news.

I sit here in Florida, knowing what that guy is going through in Japan, but here in Florida
I can finally have a medical license and not go to jail…it only took HALF a Century

He bought too many munchies?
Why don't salary men, passed out on the sidewalks, on the train, often surrounded by their own vomit get arrested and their lives up in smoke?

He should have shown his badge and tell the officers he was on a stakeout for possible reported fire violations while under cover.

Yes, catch them all without exception, especially the bigger fish behind who sold it to him and still out there continue to sell to many other people including also other more dangerous drugs. If alcohol is banned for pandemic reasons, it’s even more important to dry that damned drug sea of sin completely.

Alcohol is more of a health social issue that cannabis/marijuana.
The worst prospect of cannabis/marijuana is that the smoker inadvertently gets hold a guitar and pretends to be Bob Dylan,
That cannot be said for the a number of alcohol drenched night lovers who want to fight the world and his wife.

""An officer on patrol noticed Shibata acting suspiciously and stopped to question him""
You mean he was HIGH!!

How many deaths in Japan are attributed to alcohol every year? Now how many deaths related to marijuana? Legalize the harmless plant.
Fuzzy
Why is this in the news? Even countries that have death penalties for drub possession wouldn’t consider a young guy with a single joint as newsworthy.
Yume
anyone have a lighter? ohh thank you!

Where are you getting this from? I just googled it, but couldn't find any links.

Does this article mean that he was the only one arrested for pot this year? Please explain Japan Today.
Strangerland
Nothing I see in the article indicates that, one way or the other.
