First anniversary of murder of Kawasaki teen marked

Local residents on Saturday came to a riverbank in Kawasaki, where a 13-year-old boy was murdered one year ago.

Despite the rain, people kept coming throughout the morning and early afternoon to leave flowers at the site by the Tama River and offer prayers for the victim, Ryota Uemura, Fuji TV reported.

One man told reporters that it was still hard to believe that such a crime happened in the area, while a woman from Okinawa said she hoped that such a thing will never happen again.

Three youths were charged with murdering Uemura. The 19-year-old youth, who was the ringleader, was sentenced to nine to 13 years in prison on Feb 10 at the Yokohama District Court.

The other two defendants, both 18, are yet to be sentenced.

@TheGodfather: Good MJ reference! That was a miserable way for that kid to die. Those 3 deserve life sentences.
