Oh, blah, blah , blah! I've heard the same thing every year for a decade. This new law means nothing unless it is enforced. They know where these businesses are and who operates them. They could round them all up in a week if they were serious.

These things will always exist since there is an inexhaustible number of Japanese girls willing to do anything to buy the latest fashion accessories.

This is seriously sick.

For the children who might inadvertently step on this path we need to create an environment where it is easy for them to talk to someone," said the nonprofit's representative Shihoko Fujiwara

Actually, how about creating an environment where JKs are not fetishized? You can start with Manga and Anime, particularly that which is sold in the conbinis..

Ha. I remember when they released a campaign ad in the papers back in the 90s. I wrote to them, questioning some of the details. To give them credit they wrote back, but a lot of answers were "I don't know for sure."

That was back when enjo kosai was making news overseas, so they had to be seen to be doing something. I suppose 2020 has led to the same objective: to be seen to be etc.

and, let's not forget the long line of Japanese men waiting to patronize these businesses and exploit the young girls.

Just the way every guy's head turns here when a kid in a school uniform walks by is pretty disturbing to me.

It's obviously been pounded into every guy's head that school girls are sexually desirable.

A real challenge for politically invigorated Tokyo government.  All strands of the new administration need to be involved with the police, education/schools, parents, businesses. Frankly I would rather settle for the so call idiocy of a regular job.

its smells like the recent child porn law. its not allowed if the child victims can be proven to be children, but a certain ex pm made it clear that child porn in manga is perfectly acceptable.

"The pay is totally different. You have to be an idiot to work in a regular job," she said.

Well, that says it all right there. Let the girls earn their fair share of the pie. Let the men have their release. It's a business transaction - win-win.

These efforts will fail to have a major impact because the biggest perpetrators of underage prostitution are the girls themselves. Enjo kousai is a way of life for many high school girls and university students. They want to live lifestyles they can't afford without it. Most of them don't consider it to be prostitution either.

JK are highly sexualized and they know and like that fact. Shutting down 260 businesses is not going to do anything. Take a look at an app such as gyaruru and you can see thousands of high school girls fishing for customers.

Enjo kosai is probably the most common self employment for girls under 20 in Japan.

You can't rid the country of a problem like underage sex and prostitution when both parties involved don't consider it to be a problem. Stop sexualizing JK's and maybe we'll see a shift in attitudes 15 years later.

I think it's great that some steps have been taken to attempt to help those who are exploited in this industry. Although I agree with some comments that more needs to be done, I also think it's very ignorant to treat this issue as an isolated problem to Japan. The underground sex industry is a worldwide issue of great concern, and we need to encourage the steps taken, knowing that more measures will be needed to eradicate the problem.

I thought Japan had a lack of sex and a serious problem with demographics. Anything that increases reproduction should be encouraged.

er...sex and reproduction are not quite the same thing!

The only reason they are buster moving on this issue is because of The Olympics. Once again Japan is doing something because it doesn't want to be embarrassed in front of the international community (exposed) as opposed to it being morally right.

Teenage pregnancy, leading to high school dropouts, and a generation of young women who can't go on to tertiary education? Yup. That'll help.

Luckily, if they are foolish enough to have sex without birth control, they are more likely to get an abortion than to have a baby they can't take care of, and which society doesn't help them in the raising of.

not sure I agree.  think it is a combo of the more "progressive" folks who have been elected and a real perception that this is wrong.

Truth is that people coming for the Olympics will not see this at all.  Getting a JK date as a foreigner is almost impossible unless you speak fluent Japanese.  and even then.......

"The pay is totally different. You have to be an idiot to work in a regular job," she said.

This attitude is naive and suggests a lack of street smarts and moral guidance from parents and schools. Since young Japanese spend so much time at school, I would blame them first.

It is clear that prostitution actually works for some women, typically ones who call themselves high-end "escorts", but all of them are exposed to the risk of psychological and physical damage. For some, it will change their lives. Prostitution is not something young and probably immature women should think of lightly, as in the quote above. Someone choosing a lesser-paying job with no exposure to psychological and physical damage is not an idiot.

So, like the wannabe models and popstars who find themselves being forced into porn, girls need to be educated into what the sex industry is like. Get psychologists, female police officers, and former prostitutes to talk to girls and tell them what it is actually like and what the dangers are. If women are to go into the sex industry, let's make it an informed decision, not one made by naive girls wanting expensive goods.

With the passage of a new law regulating underage schoolgirl dating services aiming to curb the seedy business, there is fear the change will simply push operators further underground where illicit sexual activities will continue unseen.

Why not send a strong message by levying hefty fines and imprisonment terms to those caught exploiting kids.

The J-media is to blame for promoting this infatuation with high school girls.

Female high school students, female announcers, models who are paid ten thousand for an appearance,

cabin attendants are all made to look like super stars by the J-media.

This is so sick!

JK business is all about the vision of very young girls as sexual objet. It is simply and clear.

Take off this and all the JK "business" will end.

Don't always blame the women (who actually sell themselve) to guys who are in demand for it.

First educate the men who think it s OK to buy a girl.  It is because there is a demande that there an offer. If noone consume those child porn , enko josai things tec. no girl will sell their body.

No demand= no offer

So, there is a need to really erase the sexual vision of kids, to eradicate the consumption of JK business, fine customers, expose the business owners to everyone, and even the JK who work in this industries. Reveal this to the world, make it public.

If they are not ashamed of themself, their family will be.

-5 ( +1 / -6 )

Set up security camera with live feed/streaming that can be accessed 24-hours a day on either YouTube or cable TV channels. When the johns start getting recognized by friends, family and peers at work, the JK nonsense will stop.

-2 ( +1 / -3 )

Police are inept and unwilling to deal with this issue, plain and simple. Oh, they don't know how to use the internet to find where people are dealing in underage sex? What era are the police living in? They could shut it down if they wanted to, but they don't, and won't. We'll hear more of the "promise to reign it in" stuff we've heard for decades now.

There's probably plenty of guys in the Tokyo Government shifting very uncomfortably in their chairs at such a prospect....

Regulate it? Just 'king ban it!

Good sex education in schools is vital, it can teach not only the basics of reproduction, but hopefully more can be offered, like how and why marriages are successful, and how we should behave and respect each other, rather than a piece of meat that adult DVDs represent, there is more to a relationship rather than degrading your partner. Holland once had an appalling hight rate of teenage pregnancies. the government went all out and instigated a new sex eduction system, Holland has now a very low rate of teen age pregnancies, there was a film made in the UK and it had one of the leading sex teachers from Holland and she went into a school and did a trial period over several months, after the short spell in the school they noticed how the attitude of the boys and girls had changed dramatically, the boys at the beginning had basically no respect for the girls, and a lot of this was influenced by the boys watching porn, and the girls grew a voice and they started to say no the boys, rather than putting up with poor behaviour, making JK business illegal is not the best or long term solution you have to change perception, attitudes, first, then the girls can see why it is wrong and then hopefully they won't go down that road.

2 ( +4 / -2 )

if there's no coercion, then people should be able to do what they want. the girls that are doing this know fully well what they are getting into, unlike those wannabe starlets that were tricked into performing in porn.

at least with these businesses, the chances of a customer getting rough with the girl is reduced because the customer knows that the yakuza are fronting the business. like the police said, this will drive the business underground where the girls will have little to know protection.

is it because the girls are in high school? like high students don't have sex? puh-lease.

4 ( +5 / -1 )

The "business" will continue unabated due to Smartphone-savvy JCs/JKs and their willing customers posting their "special services" and price on LINE "hidden chat" feature (and many more alternatives out there with burnable phone number and burnable txt msg).

Will Keishichou even bother to adapt to the coming new reality of JC/JK business? Nah, i doubt it. As long as it's out of sight and out of mind to the public, Keishichou will be content.
