Former ‘Mr Todai’ participant arrested for allegedly raping woman

Police in Tokyo have arrested a 24-year-old man, who was once a participant in the University of Tokyo’s “Mr Todai” contest, on suspicion of raping a woman at his apartment in Shinjuku Ward. Police said the suspect, Daiki Inai, has denied the charge, claiming he “doesn’t remember” the alleged incident, Fuji TV reported Wednesday.

According to police, the alleged rape occurred in September, while Inai was still a student of the University of Tokyo’s Department of Economics.

Police say that on Sept 15, Inai took a woman in her 30s to his residence in a high-rise condominium, where he allegedly raped her. Inai was arrested that same day and was formally charged with rape on Oct 5. Currently, he is out of jail on bail.

In 2014, Inai participated in the “Mr Tokyo (Todai) University Contest” and was one of the five finalists introduced on a special internet site.

He denies it claiming he doesn’t remember the incident!

How can you deny something you don’t remember?!

It's funny that these "Big Universities" are always prone for raping. Like Waseda's rape club. I think these guys think that since they are students of these popular Universities they can look down on others and get any girls they want.

I am aware that just because a woman agrees to go back to your apartment does not necessarily mean you are gonna bump uglies, but.

There is no "but". That's it. Spending time with someone, even in one or other's residence, does not entitle either person to sex.

Is rape a category in the Mr Todai contest? He may have been confused about this.

The other day what school was it? Keio? Today Todai, going down the line of the "Big 6"?

Entitlement comes to mind, and here's to hoping IF he is found guilty he gets a nice long stay in a small room!

The old ‘can’t remember’ excuse again. For something which happened just a few weeks ago! Said, I imagine with a totally straight 無表情 face.

“Entitlement comes to mind, and here's to hoping IF he is found guilty he gets a nice long stay in a small room!”

Not gonna happen. This is the apex of the education pyramid, a place where the elite strata self-reproduce and where the rules that govern ordinary people don’t apply. All that’ll happen is that money will change change hands and an insincere apology will issue forth. Rinse, repeat.

Hollis,

I agree. If it didn't happen, you say so and deny. To say you don't remember, is to say there is a possibility.

So much for that Todai education!

He won't be seriously punished. More likely the woman will have to demonstrate using mannequins and herself how everything was positioned, they'll ask her her sexual history, and the family and police will push for a settlement without any formal charges being laid. If she tries to make a bigger deal out of it, she'll get death threats from people, etc. The usual.

Isolated incident out of a student body of around 15.000 to 20.000. Well aware that there are many unreported cases as well, but a single student's actions does not represent the toudai student body at large. Let's stay objective.

Absolutely deplorable behavior by the male student if found guilty. Some overestimate the range of their charm and stop paying attention to the words and bodylanguage (consent, either verbal or nonverbal) of their partner. No means no. Good on the girl for seeking immediate justice by reporting the case with due haste instead of mulling it over.

Hmm, it seems a bit odd. I am aware that just because a woman agrees to go back to your apartment does not necessarily mean you are gonna bump uglies, but...... Was she lured there under false pretenses? Or, were they drunk and rocking back to his joint ‘for a coffee’?

He was still a student in mid September? Only five weeks ago? He doesn't remember?

Sounds like a rapist and a liar.

What in the world is a "Mr. Todai?" I doubt anyone is interested in voting for any male college student in a beauty contest.

You obviously dont know about Japanese universities, it's quite common. The contests in the major Universities will often get some coverage on the variety talk shows, and some go into the "talent" business they are always referred to as a "former" Miss or Mr XXXXX University.

Obviously. That's why I asked. I've often heard or seen female contests of this nature, but never a male one.

The judgement here is sickening. According to other reports, he followed her out of the elevator in the building and assaulted her.

But even if she had gone willingly to his apartment with him, IT WOULD STILL BE ASSAULT.

you not making sense, which other reports? what does it mean "followed her out of elevator" , its his building and she came with him .... how would he "follow" her ?

True or not, its so sad how the police will easily believe a woman who says "she was raped" without any proof, evidence or witnesses and rush to get the guy in jail. It makes me think of the Japanese movie "I just didn't do it" (それでもボクはやってない Soredemo boku wa yattenai )

The I don’t remember defense is just as laughable as the I was drunk at the time excuse.

Neither of the. Are actually defenses.

she better have some solid evidence it was indeed rape, because

she came to his place

2.he is younger

3.he definitely has more to lose than her ,him being a prominent student.

and , just cause a women claims there was rape, is not yet a guilty verdict , so get off your little feminist radical horse please.

Another guilty verdict because somebody said so.....

Quite unusual to set him free on bail so soon after such a serious accusation. Several months in custody is usually the norm.

I also recommend checking his photos out, because unless he suddenly became a gym rat and changed 360... I find it highly unbelievable that a woman about 10 years older couldnt simply overpower him in case of assault... 3 years ago he would be blown away by the latest tokyo typhoon.

Correct. That said, they are presented as such in the articles, and undoubtedly get thrown in during discussions between prosecutors and defense attorneys.

Without any indication of any proof of rape mentioned (medical exam perhaps...), It is word againdt word.

What else can I say ?

Justice to apply with innocent until proven guilty concept, as always.
