Former izakaya employee arrested over sexual assault of customer

Police in Tokyo have arrested a former employee of an izakaya (Japanese-style pub) on suspicion of sexually assaulting a female customer.

Ryo Kaneda, 28, an unemployed resident of Saitama City, was arrested on Aug 6, Sankei Shimbun reported. According to the arrest warrant, the suspect entered the female restroom at an izakaya in Tokyo’s Minato Ward at midnight on May 17. There, he allegedly held down a woman in her 20s and raped her.

Police said the victim was visiting the izakaya with a couple of male friends. After the pub closed early at 8 p.m. due to coronavirus restrictions at the time, Kaneda and some regular customers stayed at the pub and began drinking alcohol.

Police said Kaneda, who quit his job at the end of May, has denied the charge.

A female customer, with her friends, stay in the izakaya past closing time, are drinking together, and the guy goes into the women's bathroom and rapes her, and no one notices anything out of the ordinary and no one says anything?

There has got to be a hell of a lot more to this story than being written here. I am not "blaming the victim" and I am not "convicting" the alleged perp either.

There are just a hell of a lot more questions than answers in this article as it is written!

Like who else was in the place? "Regular customers?" How many? Male? Female? You make the point to write the sex of the alleged victim's friends, why not the other "regular customers"?

2 male friends, and Kaneda, and it really shouldnt matter if her friends were male or female, it just is written this way to make it look like the "girl" is somehow wrong for drinking with 3 guys alone, long after closing time, and then claiming rape.

How do you know that "no one said anything"? For all we know she came out of the bathroom crying, and her male friends held the other guy and called police.

But even if she came out of the bathroom and said nothing at all, and carried on like normal, it still wouldn't indicate a problem with her story. We know that women are intimidated and shamed into silence when it comes to sexual assault. We also know that when survival mode kicks in people can freeze up, become numb, and carry on seemingly as normal, when inside their head they are screaming.

There is never enough detail in these articles to draw any kind of conclusion. All we know is that he was arrested. And the police don't arrest people when there isn't much evidence. Just the oppostie: an arrest is only made when the cops are 100% sure they can get a conviction. That's why arrests often come months after the original crime was commited. They are gathering evidence,

And how do you know anything different? Read what I wrote, I stated clearly to those who can read English,

From the article, it sounds like her male friends left and she stayed on alone to drink with the "regulars."

It can't be open to customers if closed. It becomes a private party with owner/person in charge.

Why wait more than 2 months after rape ?

Victim must be shocked that police left him free for that time, although it is not mentioned if she claimed crime to police that night or so.

I pray for her recovery.

Okay, I see. Perhaps what you meant was "There is more to this story and I wish they would give us those details so as not to enable people to speculate wildly and attempt to blame the victim". If that is what you meant, then I agree wholeheartedly.

"Kaneda, has denied the charge"

Sounds like now they will have to prove it.

Why is anyone at any Izakaya right now? Just go home.

Nothing positive ever comes after midnight when drinking.

Right, Girl in Tokyo. And just because he wasn't arrested doesn't mean that he wasn't detained - he may have been locked up in the cooler the whole time while the police tied up all the loose ends.

@shotgun36, You paint with a wide brush. I have had many enjoyable times drinking after midnight and I imagine many others have also.

I get the impression from this story that the victim was attacked by someone she was on friendly terms with (before she was allegedly raped). The sad fact of life is that in general terms women are vulnerable to a natural impulse on the part of men to seek out sex. This is a powerful Darwinian impulse that is normally tempered by social mores about right and wrong.

Just as people should make informed decisions about taking risks with the corona virus, women need to make informed decisions about the risks they take informed by facts. The facts are that women are not too infrequently raped by people they know during situations in which they are vulnerable. It is smart to avoid these types of situations if at all possible. I don’t know the exact circumstances in this case but unfortunately she trusted people that turned out to be untrustworthy. Not her fault of course but she no doubt regrets her decision to go to the izakaya that night.

Should have locked toilet door I would think. probably too drunk and the DOG took advantage.

What we do know (from Japanese reports) is that the izakaya is in Roppongi, and that she tried to leave after the toilet assault and was further molested on a sofa/bench. Sounds very much like everyone else in the shop knew what was happening, so I wonder why there is just one arrest.
