"Suspended sentence?"

One law for the rich (or LDP connected) and another for the rest of us!

Another suspended sentence. This means nothing, particularly as he's already resigned the Diet. A little jail time would act as a deterrent.

Japan actually has a three tier legal system. A law for the rich, a law for the poor, and a law for non-Japanese.

He "cannot escape blame as he was in a position where high ethical standards are required," the judge said. But the prison term was suspended as he reflected on his act and returned the gratuities he had received, according to the court.

He is in a position where high ethical standards are required yet the penalties for violating those ethical standards are so relaxed they can be ameliorated by just "reflection on his act" and apologies .

It seems the ethical standards are lower for his political position than when a homeless, hungry person steals to feed himself or his family.

Presiding Judge Toshihiko Niwa

A mealy-mouthed defender of illegality it seems.
