Nissan has promised to strengthen governance, which experts say lagged behind other global and top Japanese companies.

Lagged? More like doing something to keep the cops from further investigations into the company!

The picture of Ghosn getting out of the toyota Alphard says alot.

This is a joke, prosecutors are being used to solve an internal dispute. It's apparent that company governance was slack, Carlos didn't break any law. But now handed to prosecutors who seem to be more focused on saving face as they have little to actually legally prove any law breaking. But can't admit their mistake, best to stop a man from seeing his wife. Limit his interactions. And hope he breaks, confesses to everything the Kennedy killing, planning the Pearl Harbour attack, being involved in several crop circles and the disappearance of many ships in an area described as the Bermuda Triangle.

I am quite sure Ghosn engaged in some unethical activity based on all I have read on this but I am not sure he has committed a crime.

The whole handling of this case is perplexing to me and the restrictions against him seeing his wife seem pretty draconian.

It will probably make for one hell of a book some day.

If he is proven guilty then punish him accordingly but I am just completely amazed that no one else other than Kelly at Nissan is being charged with anything. As much as I have grown to dislike Ghosn through all of this (I have never met him so it is just from reading) I still believe something is very, very fishy about all of this.

After seeing this I hope I am never accused of a crime in Japan.

Maybe anybody visiting Japan (including Olympic athletes) should consider a crash course in SERE training before they come.

why is he riding a Toyota car ? they should investigate that too LUL

Nissan, which is allied with Renault SA of France, has seen profits nose-dive amid the fallout from Ghosn's arrest.

It bears repeating.

@Cricky He was probably involved in the theft of 100 kg of cherries in Niigata last June too.

Seriously though, this makes the Japanese justice system look really bad.

This is a joke, prosecutors are being used to solve an internal dispute.

Prosecutors are part of a tool in what is becoming apparent to be a classic Japanese scam.

This one is backfiring bigtime though.

Don’t forget 9/11 as well.

Nissan's former chairman, Carlos Ghosn, appeared in a Japanese courtroom Thursday for a hearing ahead of his trial on accusations of financial misconduct.

It was the first of a series of hearings to iron out logistics for Ghosn's actual trial. The trial date has not been set, and some legal experts say Ghosn's trial may not start for months, even possibly until next year.

Err so this is all just to record what he and his lawyers say, so Saikawa can eavesdrop and the gov can counter the defense ? What democratic country stalls court trials beyond a year? Even OJ Simpsons trial was quick to starto.. Seriously what is our democracy?

I wonder how many other Senior Board level Foreign exec's there are of Japanese Companies here in Japan ? And whether they're nervously watching their local Counterparts for signs of dissent. It seems to be a popular way to get rid of employees here in Japan, by trying to fabricate some offense and using that as the excuse for a prolonged investigation and subsequent removal from the Company even though no wrong-doing was ever uncovered.

putting aside, for the moment, the issue of unfairness in the treatment of the defendant, what is the best defense strategy? Does it involve trying to sway public opinion? In Japan? Abroad? Are there backroom negotiations going between power brokers who would rather stay out of the spotlight? If so, does Ghosn still have powerful friends in Japan? Will it really come down to laws, evidence and what can be proven?

The whole thing is so unprecedented, I have no idea what to expect, but I would not like to see this man rot in a Japanese prison. Pay a huge fine, yeah, maybe retire to somewhere overseas, but to send a man who rescued Nissan to jail for many years realy does sounds like a conspiracy.

ghosn is like a baby lamb surrounded by wolves - nissan, renault, prosecutors, judges.

.

The man's unending hubris has become his nemesis.

To think the CEO of TOYOTA earns equivalent of $3 million / year ------

compared to the $30 million ghosn helped himself to.... And now he riding a TOYOTA. ! ! !

@mtuffizi, Ghosn is more like a GIANT (Lemuel Gulliver?) than a 'baby lamb'; that is why they are so afraid and have used every means to topple and restrain him..

I have no pity for Nissan, with it's current president, we expect Nissan to go into bankruptcy again. The currentJapanese president saikawa trys to destroy a man that helped Nissan for 2 decades, this say a lot of things abt current Nissan board. Some famous racer said on television that saikawa is necessary because he is the only one that have been in contact with Renault and it current president. We are into the 21st century, it is time to change the old people like saikawa and pick a whole new team if Nissan wants to surive. I already wrote, no more buying of Nissan products. Toyota is anytime better or is Nissan telling us that saikawa is all they have.

Have to agree with mtuffizi above.

Yes, I think his salary and benefits were obscene but actually normal in that stratosphere.
