Police in Tokyo have arrested a 45-year-old former taxi driver on suspicion of robbing a woman taxi driver.
According to police, the incident occurred early in the morning of Sept 9. The suspect, Yasuhide Miyakoshi, got into the taxi in the Kabukicho red-light district of Shinjuku and asked to be taken to a location in Nakano Ward via Odaiba, Fuji TV reported. When they arrived after about an hour, Miyakoshi refused to pay the 17,500 yen fare and instead threatened the 55-year-old woman driver with a fruit knife. He stole about 20,000 yen from the driver and fled on foot.
Miyakoshi was later arrested after he was unable to pay his bill at a manga coffee shop in Ikebukuro where he had been staying for three days. An employee called police.
Miyakoshi, who was identified through the taxi’s dashboard camera footage, has admitted to robbing the cabbie, police said. He was quoted as saying he was looking for a woman or elderly taxi driver to rob.
Police said Miyakoshi worked as a taxi driver until the end of August.
