Fugitive rape suspect captured in Yokohama park

A 20-year-old man, arrested on charges of rape and robbery, who escaped from the Yokohama District Prosecutors Office building on Tuesday, was captured in a Yokohama park on Thursday afternoon.

Japanese media reported that Yuta Sugimoto was taken into custody just before 1 p.m. in a wooded area near a park in Izumi Ward, about 20 kilometers from the building in Kawasaki from where he escaped.

Police said Sugimoto ran into a stream when police approached him but was surrounded by about 10 officers before he got very far. He reportedly told police he doesn't intend to run away again.

Television showed police escorting Sugimoto to a waiting police car.

Two friends of Sugimoto were seen in a car nearby and were being questioned by police on Thursday night.

Japanese media said Sugimoto had a cell phone on him, given to him by an acquaintance, which was how police were able to pinpoint his whereabouts.

Police plan to hold a news conference later Thursday to provide more details on Sugimoto's escape and if he had any accomplices.

Sugimoto was the subject of a massive manhunt with 4,000 police officers, 850 vehicles, sniffer dogs, helicopters and boats searching for him after he escaped. He was being questioned over charges that he and another man raped and robbed a woman on the streets of Kawasaki on Jan 2.

Glad he was caught.

Caught! Faster than I expected. Perhaps this time use 2 pairs of handcuffs and can I suggest a high voltage fence?

Glad they got him.

Good job. Hardly see that 4,000 officers was necessary but it it the result that counts. Not the brightest criminal. Thought for sure he would`ve headed into Tokyo right away, not be hanging out in a public park relatively near from where he escaped.

Meguroman

I don't think 4,000 police were too many. Such a massive mobilization probably limited the guy's avenues of escape and boxed him into a corner in the park.

Good job by the police.

Thank GOD!! I hope this time he does not escape from the J police!! Do hope they throw the book at him!!

Phone tracking at its best , good job guys!! next time use Handcuff not leashes !!! KUDOS!

This is great news. Kudos to the police for capturing him.

Interesting about the cellphone. It was mentioned yesterday specifically that the did not have his phone with him when he escaped so I wonder how they were able to track it. Received from a friend who was then caught, perhaps? Anyway good work.

From what they described on TV he was caught because they did have another police officer in the direction he ran in, and that was enough to make him give up on running. Last night was so wet and miserable in the Kanto area that he probably decided he was better off behind bars where at least he would be warm and dry!

I am happy to hear this news. However, it's a little fearsome that police can identify accurately where anyone with a cell phone is.

-4 ( +4 / -8 )

They'll know to tie the waist rope double tight this time.

1 ( +3 / -2 )

I used three train stations last night and today, and there were police stationed outside each of them. I'm thinking that they were looking for this guy, and that these officers are included in the 4000 count.

-1 ( +3 / -4 )

This wasn't smart enough to know the police could track his cellphone? They've been doing that since the 80s.

I don't know. 4000 police, and it only took one dude pulling his cell logs to track him down. Whoever did that bit of work needs a raise. They are obviously smarter than the dickheads who let him escape.

i hope the cops lay into him, both for escaping and for committing rape. he's the type of scum that "confessions" were made for!

-6 ( +4 / -10 )

The people must be relieved for the time being. All we need now is a speedy trial and convict him for the crimes he's committed and send him to prison. The Yokohama District Court and branch offices have many criminal cases on its dockets.

-2 ( +2 / -4 )

Good job capturing this creep, but it's strange that police is going through a lot of trouble of trying to cover his face while they bring him into custody. We already know what the guy looks like from all the news coverage.

I'm just glad this is over. Schools were very alert and some had children walking in groups, teachers posted every few blocks, and parents accompanying their children to school. He couldn't have been armed with a gun or a bomb or anything, but it sure seemed like it.

As the old saying goes in Japan, we can all sleep with our pillows high. (=sleep in peace)

Really? And what if, by chance, he's innocent?

-1 ( +7 / -8 )

@ Vernie Jefferies yes good point,,,after flooding the news with his photos,I also saw the wife's blog , she posted pictures of him, while at love hotel, ha ha ha!!

2 ( +2 / -0 )

Moondog: Really? And what if, by chance, he's innocent?

Then he certainly didn't make a very good case for himself by running away from the police.

-1 ( +4 / -5 )

Moondog

If he were innocent, why would he escape? What could he hope to accomplish? He'd have to spend his entire life in hiding and how could he prove his innocence? This isn't the fugitive where David Janssen spends 4 years on the run looking for the one-armed man.

Sugimoto is most likely a sociopath.

Interesting about the cellphone. Was he too dumb to turn it off, or can they actually track them while they are turned off? Anybody knows?

Have been watching today's events over and over again on TV. Sort of feel sorry for the dude. For two days he was like a cult hero on TV ... with his pictures being shown over and over. Then suddenly he's caught ... and now he is rapidly becoming history.

As for the cellphone ... he was talking with a friend or friends ... and police were able to zero on his possible location. Such modern technology is good for people with Alzheimer's Disease ... if an oldster gets lost and is carrying a cellphone ... just zero in on where he is using it.

Apparently, according to TV, when the three policemen caught him in Yokohama ... he was trying to flee again ... this time by running through a small stream. Guess the water slowed him down. After being caught, he allegedly said something like, "Don't worry ... I'm not going to run away again." Maybe he was both cold and hungry ... and was secretly hoping that he could have the warmth and comfort of a cell ...

-2 ( +0 / -2 )

Glad they got the guy!

0 ( +5 / -5 )

Let him rot in jail.

1 ( +2 / -1 )

If you go on the run never use technology especially a cell phone.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

I'm just glad he was caught... (I live in Yokohama...)

1 ( +2 / -1 )

He did not have his phone when he ran away. Seems like they knew who he called on his phone, then checked who they were and triangulated where their phone(s) was / were. So, a couple of officers would have been assigned to go to where each of those phones was and just wait.

Pretty good work, and for a cretin like that he must have been flabbergasted to find himself magically surrounded by police out in the middle of the woods.

1 ( +1 / -0 )

You have to be on drugs?? Or just plain too thick in the head to even imagine this scum bag is innocent! Innocent people do not RUN AWAY and cause all of this kind of trouble, guilty, guilty is written all over this dude's actions!! Innocent?? Hahahaha! Keep on smoking banana peels!

1 ( +4 / -3 )

I bet you his lawyer, the one that was having an INTERVIEW with Yuta Sugimoto, 20 years old and who escaped from the cops, felt really, really stupid!! No matter how many wise guys here on JT are going about this fool being innocent, everybody in Japan KNOWS this idiot fool is guiltier than dirt!

2 ( +4 / -2 )

Hey, they got him before he could get his plastic surgery!

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Now it's Yuta's turn to be on the receiving end. Careful with that slippery soap!

-1 ( +3 / -4 )

Glad this guy was caught. My wife speaks very good English, but even I was scratching my head when she left me a note that read., "Please lock the door - there is a criminal there." She was not home at the time, so I was very surprised to read this. And yes, I locked the door!

1 ( +2 / -1 )

I just heard on the news that when they finally got him (he was hiding in a small creek) that more than 100 police had him surrounded! More than 100!! Incredible.

-3 ( +0 / -3 )

It was 10, not 100 police.

the people of Japan can now rest a little easier.

-1 ( +2 / -3 )

Now it's Yuta's turn to be on the receiving end. Careful with that slippery soap!

He was arrested and will be imprisoned in Japan if convicted. So, your comment does not make any sense.

Let me see the "Japanese media reported that Yuta Sugimoto was taken into custody just before 1 p.m. in a wooded area near a park in Izumi Ward, about 20 kilometers from the building in Kawasaki from where he escaped".

ARE you kidding me this guy didn't run anywhere he just went to the park and watched the J-Cops run and fly by looking for him. Interesting to note.

"The police said that Yuta had a cell phone on him, given to him by an acquaintance, which was how police were able to pinpoint his whereabouts".

What??????????????

The papers also wrote that " two friends of Sugimoto were seen in a car nearby and were being questioned by police on Thursday night".

Come on people we all know his friends turned him in but the J-Cops are taking the credit to try to save their face. Look at where the guy was captured he didn't go far!!! I suspect the J-Cops gave his friends the phone to give to him this is how they cover up the capture.

Wouldn't it be easier just to aprehend the suspect when this so-called "exchange" with his friends took place?

The various reports states that police obtained the list of his friends through his cellphone records. Methinks the police questioned every single one of them and as a result, one fessed up that he/she lent him the cell phone.

From what they described on TV he was caught because they did have another police officer in the direction he ran in, and that was enough to make him give up on running.

I'd like to think they could've gotten him without 10 officers even if they weren't surrounding him to begin with, but I guess I know better...

-1 ( +1 / -2 )

Good for the police.

0 ( +2 / -2 )

Ditto for the policemen! As for Yuta san, probably he intentionally stopped running upon realizing he'd be up and about at around 30. Another free board and lodging load from my taxes.

-1 ( +0 / -1 )

Glad to learn he is once again in custody !! Still unclear how he managed to get away from the prosecution office...if in fact he was hand cuffed and placed in a detention room according to police standard procedures ?? Can't be too careful these days....

letsbereaistic:

Correct, but I think you would agree that he just made himself a heck of a lot more suspect,

That is not how the law works, you don't go to prison for rape because you ran away from questioning - or perhaps it works like that in Japan?

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Glad they got him. I was wrong in my comment on the other article, he hadn't fled far. Few funds? Or not smart enough?

Still tho, all those boots on the ground they set out, just a show to save face. They ended up getting him via normal detective work 2-10 ppl could've been doing.

1 ( +2 / -1 )

Hey! This idiot fool Sugimoto is now behind bars!! Good riddence!!
