On Dec 16, Judge Ryosuke Takahashi of the Fukuoka District Court ruled in favor of Japan Rail Kyushu and ordered a Higashi Ward resident to pay 1.3 million yen to compensate for damages brought about his near daily urination routine over the course of six months.
According to the court, from February until August of last year the man would pass through Chihaya Station in the morning of almost every weekday. While there, he would ride the elevator connecting the platform to the ticket gates and proceed to relieve himself on the door and floor in front of him.
Near the end, the defendant’s daily pee party had resulted in widespread corrosion of the elevator and it needed a major servicing and replacement that cost JR Kyushu 1.21 million. In addition to parts, the door and floor of the elevator needed to be replaced.
The defendant admitted to his urination habit but challenged JR Kyushu on the grounds that the related construction work done by JR could have been cheaper had they reused material (that he had peed on several times) from the elevator repairs.
In the end, Judge Takahashi disagreed and ordered that the defendant pay the full amount. Apparently the judge was convinced that the extent of golden corrosion was such that “the entire set of components needed replacement and nothing could have been reused.”

Yikes. That is sick. What was he doing, marking his territory?

LOL...So, this guy p!sses on the elevator like a stray dog, and has the ballz to haggle over the price of repairs. He's got some nerve! I would have charged him more in fines, and made him do community service. Perhaps making him clean the toilet stalls everyday for a year at the station might show him how vile his actions are.

It took 6 months to catch this guy?

We all heard of the golden parachute, how about the golden elevator. This sicko needs serious help, peeing in the elevator on a daily basis is bad enough but then doesn't have the brain to understand the owner wants it replaced because of his disgusting actions.
Some people have no concept of reality do they.
How about they now ban him from catching trains and using stations too.
Mariam Tebourbi
Disgusting. Even some dogs are civilized enough to know that they shouldn't pee in such places! I would have charged him much more if I were the judge! What about those people who vomit in the stations/train cars?
SenseNotSoCommon
Why isn't the guy named?

I found some more details. Apparently, not only did he pee in the elevators, he also peed in the stairs leading up to the platforms, and he also peed on the platform. WHO DOES THIS? This guy should not only pay for fines and repairs, I would argue that he needs to be mentally evaluated.

Hilarious......I guess his producers did not potty train him for the JR train stations ?

Is it just me or does the title of this article have a dangling particliple and can be taken as "He must pay 1 mil yen every day for 6 months for peeing in an elevator"?
That would be a hefty fine for "dangling" your You-know-what in a public place!
nath
I would`ve given him community service as well. Disgusting. They should issue an on-the-spot fine for those people who puke on the train platform as well
electric2004
It seems he was intelligent enough not to relieve himself from the overpass onto the high voltage power lines for the trains.

Why did it take so long to catch a reapate offender?

Why is this a civil case and not criminal? This is also a public health issue.

To pee in public is a Japanese custom and quite common. I have seen tens and tens of men doing that in all different kinds of places. The problem here is that he kept peeing on the same spot, and did not diversify! Other Japanese men are recommended to kindly relieve themselves according to Japanese custom in RANDOM places, please!

Pee is pretty acidic, and acid causes corrosion over time. It also carries bacteria, so he could have made a lot of people sick from pulling that disgusting stunt.
I kind of have to agree with this. During pre-War or early post-war Japan, public toilets were pretty scarce, so it was okay to just whip it out and pee on a tree or on a side of a building. Unfortunately, that habit hasn't gone away and has transcended down through the generations, and it has become almost culturally accepted to pee in public. You rarely see public urination (by adults) in other cultures, or at least not as much as you see it in Japan. I also partially blame the parents for creating a mind set that its okay for a child to pee in public. "You need go pee Taro? Its okay you can pull down your pants and go in those bushes." Then Taro grows up to be an adult who thinks its okay to pee anywhere he sees fit. I see taxi drivers do it, drunks do it all the fricken time, and especially older senior citizens do it.

I prefer using an urinal, but I don't see anything wrong with taking a leak behind a bush or on the side of a building as long as it isn't culturally offensive or involve indecent exposure.
Elevators are a different story though. It's a rather expensive 4x4ft box I would rather not having smelling like urine when I step into.
nedinjapan
I guess the underlying philosophy is that to hold urine is not safe for your health. So if we abide by the principle of safety, a Japanese value, we should allow people to relieve themselves and avoid a bladder burst, when such a situation comes up! It is just a bit odd that he had to pee at the same spot for so long; maybe he became conditioned to the elevator environment, like Pavolv's dogs :-)

It would be cheaper if he used the parks toilet its a good lesson to him ,shoganaino ne !
