Four men used pepper spray on a 29-year-old man who works for a precious metals retailer in an attempt to steal a bag from him, containing four million yen in cash in Tokyo on Monday, police said, adding that the robbery attempt was unsuccessful.

According to police, the incident occurred at around 1:20 p.m. in the Matsugaya district of Taito Ward. Fuji TV reported that the president of the precious metals company called 110 to say there had been a robbery attempt.

Police said the employee carrying the bag got out of a car outside the precious metals retailer and was about to go into the store when four masked men suddenly attacked him. After spraying the man, they tried to grab the bag but the victim screamed out and the four fled empty-handed.

About an hour after the attack, a station wagon believed to be used by the thieves to flee the scene was found parked in Taito Ward.

Pretty dumb to risk long term incarceration with nothing to show for your 'effort'.
