A lot of legal problems in Japan start 72 hours after arrest. In most advanced normal countries a judge would probably determine veey quickly that there are mental issues in a case like this. (Setting fire to a shirt in a hotel room would suggest this).

But as usual the judge rubber stamps the police/prosecutors demands.

I agree to a large extent (but maybe blame is too strong a word). The image of Japan that some foreigners have is completely warped by the internet, animes, etc.

Probably meeting women is easy but whether women want to go with a guy like him is a completely different story.

Perhaps he thought it would be easy, he thought Japanese women would easily be picked up by an European guy, turned out it wasn't that easy.

Is the victim going to be compensated for his "light injuries" will he get his medical bill's paid by the attacker, who is going to pay for the concealing, I am sure the 50 YO Japanese man is going to have flash backs over the attack, he is going to need some help in the future.

Will he be incarcerated in a nice Hokkaido prison? will all of his sentence be in Japan or will he be sent home to carry out his full sentence their?

Alcohol defense?? Hay, he was sober before he took that first drink.

He got less time because the injuries were light? What kind of nonsense is that? Usually stabbing someone in the neck will be guaranteed murder and the victim was lucky as hell. I'd be pissed if I was him, "yeah, you probably should have died, but in the end your injuries weren't that serious so obviously that should mean less jail time, if you had actually been disabled for life then maybe he'd deserve the whole 12!"

Motive isn't actually a necessary element of a criminal offence. Intention is a necessary element that has to be proved (and motive can establish intention but it isn't independently something which needs to be proven). It doesn't seem to be in dispute that he intended to stab the guy multiple times. What specific event drove him to do it doesn't really seem important in this case.

Interesting that the defence tried to pull the "Diminished responsibility due to alcohol" lurk. Often it works even with drugs like "ice".

Er....so you are asking for a logical and rational explanation for why a drunk guy would set his own shirt on fire, then go out and stab a complete stranger multiple times in the neck?

I'm also shocked a German would do this. They seem like such nice people, at least in my travels around Southeast Asia.

Some guys walk around with the attitude of “I’m gunna get action tonight!”. This attitude in some guys is actually very dangerous and I’ve had to knock some folks out flat who put their hands on others like they owned em.

Something doesn't seem right. Stabbing someone multiple times in the neck usually results in death, but this guy survived!? Good on him! Don't take out your anger on innocent people because your pick up game is WEAK AF! Lock this big baby away in a prison offshore somewhere.

Cops couldnt get a confession, hence the suggested sentence by the prosecutors. Prosecutors here tend to go for the proverbial jugular when they cant get a confession, and on occasion they lose like here!

Attempted murder? So the other guy survived after stabbing in the neck? Lucky he is in Japan. Any other places and he would get shot down. Traveling all this way just to pick up women. His vacation just extended to six years in prison.

Read too many stories about how easy it is to pick up girls here. But it is not, specially if you are not attractive enough and strange. I guess girls realized how crazy this guy was and kept safe from him
