Live, work in Japan at your own peril; Japanese executives of the same caliber would be treated exactly the same way given the circumstances. Ghosn is no different! Power struggle within Board of Directors has always been common, regardless of the country you live in, and has obviously contributed leading up to the situation he finds himself in.

Tread where you dare, but be aware - it’s not only about cultural division!

The US does not like citizens with dual (or more) nationality. Remember how recently the Japanese police confiscated her Lebanese passport so she could not leave Japan, so she dug out her US passport and flew to France? She also has French nationality apparently. It sounds like the Ghosns may have spread themselves too thinly to expect help from any one quarter, so I cannot see Trump being moved by this, unfortunately.

All depends on what kind of fish you catch; I recall Paul McCartney getting caught smoking pot at whilst at Narita Airport, and being released after a few days. Judge probably said “ sign this before I release you. Ahhh... the Beatles those were the days, my wife forgives you too!”

The media is a business... and when money flows their way.., they publish or they broadcast.

For now any thing that relates to Trump (the good or the bad) actually "sells".

And if a rich foreigner cannot get out of jail FREE, then he gets the media to "speak" on his behalf.

The best way is to "appeal" to whom that gets the most coverage.

Now we know why she was not allowed to communicate with the suspect. She too may have a lot to lose.

"I am an American citizen. "

Lots of people are. Many of them have husbands in jail. But, they are poor, black, or Hispanic and no US television network would think of letting them make an appeal to the POTUS.

His mother country dumped him. The FACT

They both of them shouldn't be soooooo greedy at the start. I believe in Japan GABBARAI NIPPON.

The wife of former Nissan Motor Co Chairman Carlos Ghosn called on U.S. President Donald Trump to step in and help her husband

hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha. Its like beating a dead stick with a horse.

Don't hold your breath Ms. Ghosn.

-1 ( +0 / -1 )

It would be interesting to know what she thinks President Trump could do even if he was willing. What could it be about her husband that justifies such special treatment?

-1 ( +1 / -2 )

She should go to the American Consulate in Japan. They are there to provide a minimum level of support to foreign nationals living in other countries. She has very little chance that they will become involved in defending a personal legal case.

-2 ( +0 / -2 )

Trump should ignore this. Carlos isn't a US citizen. When you are in prison, you don't get to visit your wife all the time.

-4 ( +0 / -4 )

I think it’s not really a help from TRUMP that she wants,

it’s the global attention! By calling on to Trump, he’ll TWEET. about the call and for sure the Tweet will go viral, then it will creat global attention and public opinion.

Maybe you are right. I will however shred more light on Japans human rights abuses, and it's appauling standards of justice.

1 ( +3 / -2 )

Where the heck is she now? Just go to US embassy

They won't help, especially the one in Akasaka.

Lets see, how great trump really is ???

If he busts Ghosn out of prison, will you be impressed?

-1 ( +2 / -3 )

@ ozellis : Not a Trump fan and am opposed to the treatment of Ghosn but this is simply ridiculous.

In no way can this be helpful. Kind of stupid actually like a spoiled child pulling out all stops to get her way.

.

Agreed on all points!

It will backfire.

By running around the world appealing to every country, she is digging herself a bigger hole -making herself look ridiculous - and deepening mistrust.

ESPECIALLY in light of the fact that the French Government - Ministry of Justice- is pressing charges against Ghosn for over $12 million Ghosn drew from R-N fund for personal use , as of yesterday's - (JUNE 5) - news in ****ALL media :US, FRANCE, EURO,and Japan, etc.

1 ( +2 / -1 )

@ Reckless  :Trump should help Americans who are wrongfully imprisoned. Even Ghosn's own countries don't care enough to raise a finger.

.

Agreed!

-1 ( +2 / -3 )

Not sure if that’s effective. Most here would agree Trump is very childish. To pull his strings you have to speak his language, that grammar school playground language:

Hey I bet you don’t have enough sway with Abe to help out Gohn. Bet you can’t do it! Bet you can’t

Start tweeting that and see.

2 ( +3 / -1 )

Trump-san Make Ghosn Great Again. In all honesty, Ghosn should create his own car company, like Tesla a new startup Electric car company in Japan as a new venture and I will wait and see it grow and buy them all over.

-1 ( +2 / -3 )

yeah right. Just ask the president. Great tactic. I bet the Japanese will love that. The court of public opinion rests.

A motivating factor encouraging individuals to obey laws is the shame families and spouses can and will receive. However, in the US - Guilt by Accusation - is well accepted, and a failure to prove guilt is not evidence of innocence and further investigations are to be required, so the wife might want to seek aid in some other way.

-2 ( +1 / -3 )

Hmmm...I kind of get it.

They are being treated in and unusual and unfair manner...it's a desperate plea. Perhaps designed to bring more overseas focus on the case?

Trump raises a lot of negatives though, and if Trump is seen as your friend....well....it might backfire.

She is an American citizen and has every right to ask Trump for help. She is also a victim of the Japanese injustice system by not being allowed to see her husband even though he has not been convicted of any crime. However, I doubt if Trump will step up to the plate and offer any assistance. It’s not his country or his mandate. Anyone in their right mind knows that their treatment is a human rights violation, but this is Japan and ‘normal’ or ‘progressive’ do not exist here. It is a country with 60’s mentality and an 1800’s culture. I guess he is lucky he is not in public stocks at Shibuya crossing.

True, Carlos is not a U.S. citizen but Carole is. Trump can simply remind Abe that this has been an international embarrassment for Japan for some time. Businessmen (and women) from around the world, including America have expressed concerns about doing business in Japan as a result of this fiasco.

Abe asked Trump to bring up the kidnapped Japanese when he had discussions with Kim.

Visitation rights for family members of people held on suspension is a given, Carlos is not incarcerated at this time but not allowed to even talk to his wife.

2 ( +4 / -2 )

I’m not a fan of Trump and I understand that she is American. However, what she is asking is something that no American President would get involved in. Especially Donald Trump. If he gets involved this would go against his entire America first and make America great again mottos.

There are many Americans, rich and poor, that Trump did not come to the aid of abroad. He would lose a lot of followers she he start helping someone that isn’t American.

Furthermore, he has put Nissan and himself under investigation within the U.S. by the SEC for breach of trust.

Smacks of desperation (understandably).

Ghosn is in the same 'precarious' situation as Assange; nothing much Oz or Fr/leb/Bra can do about it other than provide customary consular assistance, tell Britain/the us/japan they're watching etc.

It was also reported a few months ago that, in the early 2010s, Ghosn moved his tax residence to the netherlands to avoid paying the french 'wealth tax'. Probably regrets it now.

Although have little doubt Ghosn's dodgy af (business wise), he still deserves a fair trial. The main issue here (imo) is that not a single J (exec, accountant etc) has been charged/prosecuted so far. No one's gonna make be believe that Ghosn acted alone. Reeks of double standards & personal vendetta to me.

and for Japanese authorities to respect "the presumption of innocence" in their handling of the case.

How can they respect something they don't have, and most likely have never heard of?

This is not a wise legal move by Ghosns Lawyers

Ghosns' lawyers aren't involved with this plea, it was made during her interview with CNBC News.

Amazing how they don't even let her talk to him. How much has this imprisonment cost taxpayers so far?

-2 ( +7 / -9 )

Hahaha, oh dear.. The Ghosn collapse continues.

I'm sure the irony of getting someone heavily suspected of financial crimes to come to the rescue of another even more heavily suspected of financial crimes is lost on the Ghosn crime family. What an embarrassing joke this man has turned out to be, what a waste.. Add another 10 years for hypocrisy in poor taste!

1 ( +12 / -11 )

This is not a wise legal move by Ghosns Lawyers. Trump always supports the "rule of law", so will not interfere with legal processes. He will not and cannot have influence in the Laws of Japan. Really unwise move.

It's pretty clear you didn't read the article.

Actually, I did. It's pretty clear you don't know what is going on...Carole isn't in any legal trouble, her husband is. He is not a U.S. citizens. Trump doesn't like foreigners, why would he help him?

On that basis then, it would appear Trump has no interest in helping secure the release of the abductees from NK because they are not American.

That's not the pictured painted last week. He pledged to do every thing he could to help.

So an American asking her president to help securing rights for her husband doesn't seem so far fetched.

Trump would be smart to call Abe about this. It would make Macron look like the ineffective leader he is.

-5 ( +8 / -13 )

Interesting article!!!

6 ( +10 / -4 )

Id like to be wrong, but I don't see Trump helping.

3 ( +14 / -11 )

Very very smart. If Trump tells Abe to roll over, Abe rolls over. If Trump throws a stick, Abe goes and fetches.

-2 ( +14 / -16 )

Wow, I'm not a fan of Donald Trump, but if he becomes involved, this could become a thorn in Japan's side. Pretty smart move on Carole Ghosn.

agree.

She should go to Hague to the Human Rights tribunal.

absolutely!

If Trump can help get Americans back from North Korea he can get them back from his mate Shinzo

good point!

Why would she ask Trump to help a non-American citizen? Has nothing to do with Trump, or America.
