It's going to be a long hot summer and tempers flare. Summer seems to be the stabbing season in Japan.

I'm sure this is just what their parents envisioned when deciding to have kids.

This is typically how kids nowadays solve problems isn't it. They don't know how to talk it out. Just grab a knife with the mentality of 'I'll show you who's right...cope this'.

Things happen and some times we never know why...

sibling rivalry? I wonder where the mother was? Probably no link in this case, but teenage girls need their moms around, or at least some other trustworthy female figure.

As for lack of mother might be a factor(not sure).

Said that Knife-stabbings are more dangerous and lethal than most gunshot wounds, ask any cop or Paramedic. With stabbing wounds often the MAJOR damage is done by removing the knife, etc.

Hope brother will be fine, good for father to step in and call the authorities.

Most family disputes are about protecting a member or getting them back on the right track.

So the teen went ballistic, won't be the first or last time after an older sibling/parent tells them to pull up their socks.

Of course i said it with a hint of sarcasm but in saying that....i am sure we will read about more sibling stabbings before this summer is out as japanese society is very good at breeding the copy cat thinking.

@Zenny11- unless you see a Japanese HS girl (from boondock Nagano, no less) as a typical druggie who stabs a supposedly caring older brother as being a "standard family dispute"? No, no contradiction whatsoever..

I wonder if there was a history of abuse in this family that may have led to such drastic mesures to take place. I remember a few weeks ago a boy tried to kill his father because the father was continually abusing the mother. I'm not saying that this is the best way to solve things but it may be the reason why someone would resort to such drastic violence.

Other than that, I dont really think most girls need a mother figure around as long as they have other positive people in their lives. I grew up with no mother (and a very distant father) and have turned out well because I had great teachers that filled that role.

Not at all I simply put forward a possible opinion based on supplied data and experience.

This is part of having an argument, there is no right or wrong in a true argument.

Having worked in IT for decades I can tell you IT is NOT about computers(we hardly use them) but about how data is processed/evaluated, eliminating false/positives, etc.

And we KNOW how ANY data can be used/displayed to support ANY side of an argument, ditto for statistics, etc.

We have no background as to the motive of this, so i think @Sakurala has a point. He could have been abusing/raping her since she was young, we have no idea.

Zenny11: I agree. I don't buy into that Judeo-Christian view but rather I think it takes a village to raise a child. One missing figure in a child's life does lessen the experience but does not necessairly cause the person to be a knife weilding attacker. I am sure she went to school (high school girl) which means she was probably part of a club and would have many other people to look up to and those people I am sure are able to look out for her as well.

I hope that she can find a way to resolve her feelings in a more peaceful way in the future.

I know the role and importance of role-models. Said that there is no indication of the "club(village)" she might have belonged to was the right one.

If it was the right club, IMO, there would not be a problem with her family, etc.

Not enough information. The girl isn't talking so we've got no idea on the motive. Could be abuse, could be simple family disagreement, could be anything until someone tells us more.

Who hasn't wanted to stab their brother? Siblings fight! It just doesn't usually escalated to such violence... but in this society extreme violence is ok!

Regardless of the cause she's obviously in serious need of psychological and/or psychiatric help, which is probably the last thing she's going to get from the police or during her stay in prison, which will just result in her re-offending.

How on earth do you draw this conclusion? It's more likely that he was just giving her a hard time about her hair and she stabbed him -- you read about this kind of thing more and more in the news. It usually never has any rhyme or reason, "He wouldn't give me the remote!", "He was nagging me about my cell phone bill!" etc.

Listen, if a man of 25 still lives at home, he needs to go look in the mirror and figure out what the hell he is still doing at home. My dad always said, "you can stay here til you're 18." The daughter is probably just doing what the dad in Nagano can't.

Wau.. some of the speculation in this thread is so amazing.. and none of it with ANY evidence to support it at all. JT just gave us the barest bit of facts and not enough to work with to come to some of these conclusions. We know there was a stabbing, at home between family members - brother stabbed by younger sister.. we know it was in Nihon, where stabbing is a COMMON thing. We have nothing at all to use to support any motive for the attack, nothing to support any allegation of abuse, nothing to indicate exactly who started what - we only know that the teenage girl stabbed her older adult brother and not much more. Even the mother-figure argument is faulty.. women in Nihon seem equally capable of overreacting to the point of grabbing a knife and assaulting others.. who can say what influence a mother may have had already.. just by not being there?

It's always disturbing to hear that a young person has committed such a violent crime. One has to wonder why a girl of only 17 would think that stabbing her brother would solve her problems. She needs to be punished for her actions but more than that she needs psychological counseling.

Even in Japan High school girls aren't Angels....The girl has so far not told police why she stabbed her brother... I wonder why???

When brothers can't meet their needs in their 20's 30's or even 40'S parents have to understand their own children first and avoid leaving younger sisters alone at home specially with these animals.

Personally, as long as the older brother lives, I think this is hilarious. When push comes to shove, sometimes accidents happen. ~accidents happen: I once accidentally whacked my brother in the eye with a bottle. Bottle didn't break, brother got a shiner. Could have been nasty if the bottle broke. My excuse was that brother was tickling me severely when I happened to have a bottle in my hand. Natural reaction occurred.

I knew a guy who shot HIS brother with a .22 short. In the leg. As a warning. ....they both had a lot of explaining to do to their father. "it was an accident, honest!"....

You have to ask what's going on in that family? Healthy/normal kids don't stab each other.

Without any stated reason for the attack, I'm not weighing in on either the brother's or the sister's side. I DO wonder why a 25-year-old is still living at his parent's home, but that alone doesn't automatically make him suspect.

ok i dont think being 25 and at home can make him a suspect of anything, but i must admit, when reading the first thing that comes to mind is abuse..sad but true...and if shes not talking makes it seem more suspicious, is she embaressed, ashamed...anyways not saying this is the case, maybe she was having a bad day, and they argued and she took it out on him..hope she speaks up soon so this can get settled the right way..

How can you condemn someone just because they are 25 living at home. Is it illegal. Is it immoral. Maybe its temporary. Maybe he is at university. Maybe he is saving up for a rental deposit which is very expensive here. It doesnt necessarily make him a complete loser and the one at fault in this particular incident. Its only in the Anglo Western world we have this strange misconception that someone over 18 living at home is a waster. Go to the Southern Europe, Eastern Europe and even Western Europe now and you will find its very common.

A 25 year old man living at home is perfectly common in Japan. A lot of guys do this, especially in more rural areas and continue to live there until they are married. It only becomes a problem when they lose the will to contribute to the family and community and become very recluse. We don't know if the brother was this type or not.

The girl being silent may be an indication that she is ashamed of what she has done or it may also be that she doesn't want to bring to light issues that may have pushed her to want to stab her brother. It may have been a petty argument, or it may have been years of abuse. I hope JT will update us on the reason once they know.

Sorry, that is just rubbish. Have you tried living in the UK or Tokyo for example, and tried to find the money yourself to put enough down for a place of your own? Believe me, it's not in the slightest bit easy.

I wasn't condemning the guy, just wondered why he was still living with his parents.

I also haven't read anything here yet that would make me call for the girl getting "the psychiatric help she obviously needs". Who's condeming who? We don't know any facts other than the older brother was stabbed by the younger sister and that those injuries are not life-threatening, yet you've already convicted her and consigned her to a mental institution.
