On May 18, the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department announced the arrest of a 17-year-old high school student in Yokohama City for violating the Stalker Control Law and Act on Punishment of Physical Violence. The victim of these crimes was Taiko Sasaki, member of the up-and-coming Johnnys’ Jr group 7 MEN Samurai.

According to police, the student was reported to have followed Sasaki around on at least four occasions between April 1, 2021 and May 8 this year. She would suddenly appear either calling out to the musician or grabbing him out of the blue, and fearing for his safety he consulted with his agency, who contacted police last November. The authorities issued warnings to the girl and spoke with her parents on four occasions, but it didn’t appear to deter her actions.

On April 30 she once again approached Sasaki and followed him for about 200 meters, only this time holding a box cutter. Sasaki was wearing headphones at the time and couldn’t make out what she said, but according to Asahi Shimbun her words while brandishing the blade were, “You don’t need to worry about stalking, because I won’t go on anymore,” while Nikkan Sports reported her as saying, “I bought this box cutter to die. I came to you to because I wanted to apologize before dying.”

According to the police, Sasaki managed to stay calm and quickly went to his management’s offices for fear that she might harm someone in the crowded street. Fortunately, she was apprehended before any harm came to herself or others.

Readers of the news shared their sympathy for everyone involved in online comments such as the following:

“That’s beyond scary…”

“She was going to use a box cutter?!”

“Stalkers are extremely terrifying.”

“This kind of news is reported often, but I wonder how many times it happens and we don’t hear about it.”

“It the result of seeing an entertainer as something they ‘own’. When they realize these people have lives of their own, they can’t handle it.”

“She probably didn’t have any friends. It’s sad that life goes this way sometimes, but I’m glad Sasaki wasn’t injured.”

“Of all the fans he’ll have from now on, this one will unfortunately probably be stuck in his mind.”

“I wonder if Taiko’s OK. He must have been scared out of his mind.”

“Someone like that isn’t even qualified to be called a ‘fan.'”

Oddly enough, despite Sasaki being a celebrity, the suspect apparently became infatuated with him by a chance encounter on the street and wasn’t a fan of his work, initially at least. She reportedly told police: “I saw him at Shibuya Station in April of last year and fell in love at first sight, then I started to follow him. He was the only person I could think about,” suggesting that she was unaware of his work prior to noticing him for the first time.

▼ Sasaki gained a big following online during the pandemic for his Taiko’s Challenge home videos.

If so, it’s an important reminder for all of us to stay alert and safe out there, because anyone is capable of unknowingly walking into the unwanted attention of a stalker. Luckily, no one was harmed this time and hopefully everyone involved can get the help they need to move on in the future.

Phew! That was a close shave with another potential tragedy. Yet no mention of referral to mental health counseling for this delusional and suicidal minor ?

Thank goodness Sasaki is a celebrity and he could have his agency pressure police to investigate, confront the stalker and even talk to her parents. Seems everyone else may pretty much on their own if Jpolice choose not to follow through on stalking complaints.

Fan” is shortened from Latin fanaticus, meaning persons "insanely devoted, believing themselves fatefully, or even divinely inspired”.

This story ends in the note that everyone can be safe IF constantly vigilant, not due to proactive law enforcement & available mental health counseling but mostly due to just “Luck” and “Hope”:

*- “Luckily, no one was harmed this time and hopefully everyone involved can get the help they need to move on in the future.” -*

Good luck out there women and children!

She's quite the nutter who's in dire need of help. Glad nothing tragic happened.

I know a women like her, minus the suicide threat. She has a part-time job so she can follow the band member all over the world. She is very strange. These people exist.

Many of them exist here in Japan, the land of omotenashi!

 Sasaki being a celebrity

I’m glad they wrote this.

I wouldn’t have known otherwise.

reported to have followed Sasaki around

Yeah, must be a hard life when women follow you around………let’s hope and pray that he wasn’t scared….

Calling the police would have been more sensible given she was carrying a knife.

Schoolgirls must be scary these days....

fearing for his safety he consulted with his agency

When this country can produce strong people, it will survive. Hate all you want, but when fantasy "men" are afraid of girls....

Sensible @Harry_Gatto 9:41am but Johnny’s probably has strict NDA’s preventing their revolving stable of slaves from contacting police directly until management is notified and considers marketing such incidents.

Look how they turned this incident into free publicity and a promotion (of course with the help of local media):

Very glad he's ok. Why did he not call the police immediately while keeping an eye on her until they arrived? Or, disarm her himself? She could have harmed or killed herself or someone else while he was on his way to his management office.

What is the world coming to where so many girls are into boys ( these boys who look like girls - use lipstick and foundation powder, eye brow cosmetics and so on )!

-2 ( +9 / -11 )

Interesting how the words used in the comments are different from the language used when men do exactly the same Eg creep, pervert. Sick, etc.

interesting!

People like this mentally unstable woman is the reason the anti-stalking law was put on the first place. Glad he's OK and didn't get stabbed.

Hormones.

-9 ( +2 / -11 )

7 “MEN” how ironic can you get.

-3 ( +7 / -10 )

May be suicide prevention organization should help. No one is talking about potential suicidal individual, and a waste of life. A good counseling would make it better and eventually she will realize how stupid the idea is/was.

Indeed, you are probably right about this.

Yes, back in the days of the old JT Forum someone coined the phrase metrosexual pussies to describe them. (I don't know if it was an original or borrowed expression).

1 ( +6 / -5 )

Yes, it’s likely @Harry_Gatto, this current wave of J-Dandies (©pending) such as 7 “MEN” Samurai :)) are derivative of the 90’s metrosexual trend from abroad, yet that term was originally coined by English writer Mark Simpson in 1994 for The Independent. It became a globally popular reference for narcissistic urban males fixated on their own images in 2002 when Simpson named footballer David Beckham as the personification of the term. Yes, that’s right around the time JT emerged from it’s more humble beginnings toward the fringe of main stream media so, …

Appears it was a borrowed yet correct assessment for a majority of these ‘young-boys-kept-on-retainer’ by these J“talent’ agencies.

These boy bands are a joke. Japan is a kiseichu culture and even going to juku does the opposite of the outcome wanted. Arrest the girls parents.

-6 ( +3 / -9 )

That's why idols are afraid of girls

-1 ( +3 / -4 )

Scary, doesn't matter if a stalker is a boy, girl, man or woman, just plain scary

-4 ( +2 / -6 )

From the looks of the band this poor girl was barking up the wrong tree. Infatuation can be very very powerful in some people to the extent they may have suicidal thoughts if it is not reciprocated. She will hopefully get over it and later ask herself what in Gods name was she thinking? Never to make that mistake again.

What a self absorbed hero! Just the type of guy you want sitting next to you at 30,000 feet when box-cutter-totting terrorists take over your plane to fly it into a building. The only thing this girl is guilty of is poor judgement. I hope she makes a speedy recovery from her temporary insanity.

That brave samurai was worried his makup might get smeared or his finger nail cracked or worst of all heaven forbin his hair messed up.

As someone above mentioned, the comments here are mostly misandrist when compared to the situation if the genders were reversed.

and so the revolving door of musical mediocrity keeps on spinning.
