High school student slashed, robbed on Chiba street

A 15-year-old male high school student was robbed in Funabashi City just before 10 p.m. on Monday night after his attacker gagged him and slashed the right side of his face with a bladed weapon. The student's bag containing around 5,000 yen was stolen.

The student told police he was walking home after attending a school club activity when he was grabbed from behind. Police said he was unable to provide a description of the assailant.

The boy was taken to hospital with injuries to the right side of his face and neck, but is in good condition.

seems a bit fishy to me

A club activity ending at 10pm??? Where's the parental pickup?

maybe his attacker was out of his mind. Nah, maybe Japan is just like other countries and is heading down the tubes albeit much slower.

You're new to Japan, right?

I'm surprised more people aren't robbed late at night, honestly. Especially with all the drunk salarymen walking around - one would think them an easy target. At least these things don't happen often here!

And there in lies the problem. The locals tend to live in a fantasy world when it comes to risk management of their kids welfare. Dark clothing at night (just asking for kids to be hit by cars), parental pickups (only) when it is raining (sometimes). No bike helmets, etc.

In terms of this case, I don't know what to make of it. Could be a "friend" who knew of the kids movements, or could be your normal run-of-the-mill wacko. Could also be self staged by the kids (details given above make it unable to determine). Just out of interest, it would be interesting to know the contents of the bag stolen. What about the kid not wanting to give his parents some document or test results?

Funabashi? No! Freakibashi is more like it! I live near Funabashi and it is a dirty little town full of trailer-trash. This kid was lucky! I'd also be inclined to think the assailant knew the victim's movements and was more than likely one of the many high school dropouts hanging around the station, smoking and drinking, which the local 'uhum' police ignore.

I used to live in Shimousa-Nakayama not too far from Funabashi. Had problems with scrary freaks a few times. Would not be surprised to hear about a freak like this.

Samuraiiki, about driving. I am very surprised I am still alive after living here and having to manage to survive trips from the station to home. Taxi drivers are blind old guys who think they are at Le Mans and my friend got hit three times while living there. Chiba drivers are insane.

Did the attacker have a funny accent?

Without further info, I would guess he had a fight or was bullied, and then made up the story to either cover his shame or out of fear of the culprit/s. I feel sorry for the victim, but false reporting causes rumor and gossip, and fear in elderly people or oversensitive parents.

Glad to hear that boy is right. It could be much serious if it is true??? I'm under the impression that something is not right here. Why was this boy walking alone at 10:00PM? Did this boy spent his money on something else and made up this story with his friend? Any drugs involved? Anything is possible but we will have to wait and see if cops will tackle this matter soon.

Teach the kids something useful like Taekwondo or Jujitsu.

Teach the kids something useful like get home on time, and don't walk the streets after dark alone.

seems a bit fishy to me

Maybe, but I sure as hell wouldn't slash my own face just to get attention.

"slashed the right side of his face with a bladed weapon"

A knife?

has the kid got a big test coming up or recently had a fight with his parents?

He's lucky the guy wasn't using a +1 to hit claymore. The slash would have been terminal.

So Japan isn't the bastion of safety at night that people would have you believe? Imagine that!
