A 66-year-old man has turned himself at a police station in Sosa, Chiba Prefecture, over the hit-and-run death of an 83-year-old man on Sunday.
The body of Shin Kawashima was found in a rice paddy beside a road at around 6 a.m. on Sunday. He had been knocked off his bicycle and fallen into the rice paddy.
On Monday, a police helicopter flew over the area, with an officer calling out over a loudspeaker, asking citizens with any information on the incident to come forward, Sankei reported Tuesday.
The suspect, Hiroshi Takita, a resident of neighboring Asahi City, turned himself in at the local police station late Monday and admitted to having hit the cyclist.
Takita was quoted by police as saying that when he heard the police copter flying overhead, he had been overcome with feelings of regret for having hit Kawashima, and leaving the scene. He said he had become scared of what might happen and thus decided to turn himself in.

That amazing how is this legal to force people to listen even if for a good cause. Thats worse than the political trucks and right wingers.

Can't really agree with you there, but I am glad this guy turned himself in. I don't know how someone could live with having done something like this. I hope I never have to find out.

yer i get ur point but the cost of a chopper plus the visual intimidation of a chopper shouting order at you is pretty orwellian . i.m.o

After the alcohol has gone from your body, it is wise to face your responsibilities for a lesser penalty. Police should track his movements before the manslaughter. Get witness evidence, witnesses and fingerprints and DNA etc on any bottles he may have handled beforehand.

Why do hit and runs happen so often in Japan? Only reason I ask is my wife’s relative (Yoshimoto-san) was killed in Tokyo on the 16 April 2015 by a Hit and Run and it appears drink was also a factor. My wife’s tells me it happens more in the major cities like Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto. Yoshimoto-san death likely was caused by head impact looking at the dent in the front of the van this raises another questions why aren’t cycle helmets commonly worn? I rarely see cyclist wearing safety helmets, I feel road safety in Japan is not taken so seriously. Another one of my concerns are seeing children not in child safety seats and children being held and even being held in front passenger seats.
