Police in Kushiro City, Hokkaido Prefecture, have announced the arrest of a woman suspected of puncturing 13 melons with her finger. However, her motives remain a mystery.

The crime occurred on July 28, when the 64-year-old suspect entered a supermarket and allegedly stabbed the baker’s dozen of melons with her finger at approximately 1:30 in the afternoon.

It’s important to note that these aren’t just ordinary melons, but the renowned Yubari King which often make headlines for selling at exorbitant prices. The victimized melons had a combined worth of 14,000 yen.

Interestingly enough, no security cameras caught her in the act, so it is unclear how the police managed to track down the culprit. The nature of their detective work and the suspect’s motives have not been revealed, leaving it all open to wild speculation.

Occam’s razor would suggest that she was simply checking to see which one was the freshest, albeit in the absolute grossest way possible. This kind of behavior is certainly not uncommon and was captured best in the 1985 classic "Tampopo."

However, it was far from the only theory. Netizens were full of them.

“Sounds like a yokai to me.”

“I’ve seen this in a movie. It’s a kind of kung fu training for close combat.”

“I read about people who just really like the feeling of penetrating fruit.”

“I wonder if she hurt her finger doing that.”

“If she’s not on video, I wonder who ratted her out. Maybe a family member or perhaps she was famous around town as a melon poker.”

“Is it fun to do that?”

“I guess if I had a good melon poking technique, I’d want to use it as much as possible too.”

This brings us to by far the most popular and most troubling theory: that she was practicing the ancient Japanese martial art Hokuto Shinken, which involves poking someone with such ferocity that it makes their brain explode.

It would seem this woman is a couple of melons short of a dessert.

I would hazard a guess that she’s protesting against this insane obsession with pricing fruit into the stratosphere here.

Yesterday there was news of some guy opening three (Yes! Three!) Y665 yen packages of something or other looking for his preferred trinket.  And now this.  When will this awful crime wave stop?  What has happened to the renowned safe Japan?  Are we safe in our beds at night?

As soon as I read the headline I chuckled with the memory of the supermarket scene in Tampopo. :)

Still, that's a huge loss for the store and farmers, and in this time of the need for scrupulous hygiene, malicious.

Infantile behavior, what a waste.

Hole-y Melons, Batman! What evil criminal would be behind a silly crime like this and why?

“I read about people who just really like the feeling of penetrating fruit.”

This made me laugh. Back in the day we threw a housemate out after he was caught with a watermelon stolen from the shared fridge in his bed. Don’t think he was eating it because it only had one carved round hole

Oh no! That's so rude and uncalled for.

she sounds seedy to me

They obviously traced her through “finger prints” :)

She poked them, she pays for them. Simplest solution, like signs seen in shops, you break it, you bought it!

No need fo expensive court cases or psychological analysis of her deepest hidden motivations,

Either way all of this fruit will have to be thrown away, has any one took a DNA sample from the edge of the hole? then taken a DNA swab from her? this would confirm if she had done it?

Arrested? That costs us even more, considering police work, court, lawyers, prison. She should take them, pay them and eat them all instead, under supervision. That is enough and cheaper punishment.

I really think she must've had some kind of motive or revenge for something that happened between her and a staff at that store. They shouldn't arrest her, but make her replant the melons, tend to them and harvest them to make up for the damages!

That was the funniest article I’ve read in a while!!

puncturing 13 melons with her finger? She should need to have her head examined.

The placement of the holes reminds me of bowling balls (the full size ones), while the size of the melons are right around the size of the balls in lawn bowling.

Yikes, nutcases everywhere. She’s a danger to society obviously, lock her up and throw away the key.

Yeah.......so no witnesses and no physical evidence. Yet somehow it's all on to some 64 year old woman. Was she the only person to enter the market that day?

These are the same cops that NEED people to turn themselves in for crimes committed or else things won't get solved, right?

Clearly this woman is craving something. I think it's a subliminal message. She wants some to fill some holes.

Poking holes into melons with a bare finger?

Is she some kind of kung fu master?

I can't imagine.
