Homeless man arrested for stealing woman’s handbag

Police have arrested a 45-year-old unemployed homeless man on suspicion of stealing a woman’s handbag in Arakawa Ward in May.

The suspect, Yu Someya, was quoted by police as saying he had stolen the handbag in the hope that he would obtain money to buy drugs, Sankei Shimbun reported Thursday.

Police said Someya rode his moped up behind the woman and grabbed her bag which contained 6,000 yen in cash.

In recent months, eight similar larceny cases involving a man on a moped have been reported in the area, with the perpetrator or perpetrators netting 8.2 million yen.

Police are questioning Someya about his involvement in those crimes.

Finally a normal crime here. I got tired of panty thefts, and groping on subway, etc..

@Wc626 Have you always been a racist?

Rather be homeless & free, than incarcerated in a cell with 3 squares and a cot.

He no longer homeless man now. He got bed and foods.

I was just about to say that this is a pretty "normal" crime, until I read the part about the homeless dude having a moped.

Larceny, how about robbery, I guess because it had only 6,000 yen in her bag.

Homeless with a moped? Why not sell his moped to feed his drug problem....what a scumbag

Since he stole handbags, there could have been credit cards in them too... (It doesn't say anything about "cash"...)

I'm curious how the eight million yen from eight other victims breaks down in terms of actual cash per person. Was there eight random women walking around with a million yen in cash each? Or did he just hit the jackpot one day and get eight million yen from just one of those victims, and a modest amount from the other seven? Either way, between the eight of them they were carrying the equivalent $64,000 US in cash on them.

Well at least he is not homeless anymore for the moment, and was honest enough to reply when questioned rather than " I did it because I wanted to see what it felt like to steal"

Nice headline! Better be more afraid of homeless people I guess.

He netted 8.2 million yen from 8 bag snatches!? Really!?

This. Seriously. He must have thought he was the luckiest random purse snatcher in the world. And then he gets busted for a 6,000yen job. Oh the irony.

He netted 8.2 million yen from 8 bag snatches!? Really!? Time to reconsider my retirement plan!

I have just read the Japanese version at Sankei News site. It's worth noting that he was arrested while he was in prison probably for another crime. So to be more exact, he was rearrested in prison. And, apparently, he is a repeat criminal offender. And drugs he wanted to buy was KAKUSEIZAI or stimulant drugs.

at least he was honest about it

amazing what interrogation can yield

Well, at least he was honest about it and didn't use the "I was drunk and don't remember" BS excuse.
