Hong Kong pop stars busted for drug possession in Tokyo

Hong Kong-based pop singers Kelvin Kwan and Jill Vidal have been arrested in Japan for marijuana possession, a crime that carries up to five years in jail, Tokyo police said Wednesday.

Police arrested 25-year-old Canadian national Kwan and 26-year-old Briton Vidal for possessing 0.2 grams of cannabis while they were out in Tokyo's Shibuya district on Tuesday last week, police said.

"Police searched them and found the marijuana among Kwan's belongings, and they said it belonged to both of them," said a Tokyo police spokesman.

The storekeeper called police after suspecting they were shoplifting and officers then found the marijuana, the spokesman said, although he was unable to confirm whether they had actually committed theft.

Japanese media reported that the marijuana was found rolled in a cigarette.

While the two singers have admitted to possessing the drug, they have denied taking it, media reported, quoting police officials.

"I just brought the cigarette with me that I was given in Hong Kong," Kwan reportedly told police, according to the Sankei Shimbun.

Kwan and Vidal, who are reportedly a couple, participated in anti-drug campaigns in 2007 in Hong Kong.

2 foreigners in a shop. of course they were shoplifting. what a fine diligent upstanding member of the retail community.

I think I'll go shoplift while carrying around a doobie. Duh.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

If they had been stealing, there is no way the police wouldn't have announced it by now to strengthen their case that all foreigners are drug-crazed criminals/terrorists.

Did they use the "I bought it from a foreigner" strategy ?

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Well, there visit to Japan has just been extended a little. They might use the time to study about local laws.

Bet their anti-drug message can now ring truer in Hong Kong. With pouting faces they can appear on TV commercials saying "Don't be stupid like us and go shoplifting with a refer in your pocket. Smoke it first to get the courage then go.".

Give them a free pass on the suspicion of shoplifting, but charge them to the full extent of the law for the MJ. Could be a longer holiday in Tokyo than expected.

So... they weren't shoplifting and their roach wasn't hurting anybody? Way to go, get those public menaces off the street.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Idiots. Why on earth did they have the weed on them?? Japan is one country where you don't mess with drug laws. If you want to smoke go to Canada or Amsterdam. Don't feel sorry for them in the least.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

I choose to feel sorry for them simply because they weren't harming anyone, and are liable to be punished SEVERELY for an archaic and draconian law that has no historical merit in Japanese society. The police ought to spend their free time locking up oyaji puking on train platforms and riding their bicycles recklessly through crowded sidewalks, mindlessly flicking lit cigarettes to the wind. The only thing idiotic here is the LAW ITSELF, not the people who choose to disobey it.

And up to FIVE YEARS in jail!?!? That's like five times as long as new moms get for murdering their newborns. Now where's the idiocy?

0 ( +0 / -0 )

I think that some people are missing the point that maybe, just maybe they were not shoplifting. Maybe they just committed SWG (Shopping While Gaijin). That gave cops probably cause so they searched them and then found the 0.2 grams of Mary Jay. Do you know how small 0.2 grams of Mary jay is? Probably put more soy sauce on your gyoza than 0.2 grams. This is stupid.

*probable cause

Chances are they'll get a slap and get sent back to HK. Publicity is more valuable to the pigs than keeping these 2 in jail.

The storekeeper will receive a commodation for keeping an eye on those untrustworthy gajins

This was reported in HK yesterday... only 9 days in J-custody so far... more details in The Standard http://www.thestandard.com.hk/news_detail.asp?pp_cat=11&art_id=79130&sid=22974986&con_type=1

Very simple; if they are not on drugs they wouldn't be stars. Such 'Chinglish' should be kicked out from Japan. Couldn't customs detect drugs on them or were they treated as 'VIP.'

Couldn't customs detect drugs on them or.....................

They should have said they found it in their bags after arriving in japan. We all know how customs go out of their way to make your stay more pleasurable.

0.2 grams? Would the police have to take apart the cigarettes to find this?

0 ( +0 / -0 )

No way they could get a suspended sentence, could they?

0 ( +0 / -0 )

I thought drug penalties were actually stiffer in China. Whatever, deport them and case closed.

.2gs is just crumbs, but you can get arrested for being under the influence in Japan from what i understand. . .

This is sooooo sad. The world is crazy and Japan is at the bottom.

I'm pretty sure you can't get busted for being under the influence. If it was just one spliff he should have swallowed it. Problem solved.

0.2 g yatta. what are you doing with that? 0.2 g is smaller as the head of a needle. if you want to found 0.2g on someone you really need to search well. i m not sure to be able to find 0.2g of cannabis on myself and maybe 90% of the population is same. and how could you found 0.2g of marijuana rolled into a cigarette not into 20 cigarette but only in 1 ? it s like win the takarakuji in buying only 1 ticket. the guy which found this cigarette must maybe check what did his wife did this day.

"The world is crazy and Japan is at the bottom." -- that's an awesome line; I'm going to make a note of that!

ha ha ha ... canadians. especially those from Hongcouver; how do you feel'bout your stars now? Kelvin Kwan? Edison Chen? which one's gonna go down next?! ha ha ha. HK stars are an even bigger joke than their japanese counterparts. at least japanese studios keep enough cops/paparazzi on the payroll to sweep these things under the rug. either that, or they keep the fear of Dog in their tarento ... ha ha ha.

im with you Nessie~

These yakuchuu starlets are no good deed anyway and should better be cancelled once and for all via underground channels.
