Hotel employee held for attempted murder after abandoning her newborn baby in toilet

Police in Kakegawa City, Shizuoka Prefecture, have arrested a 23-year-old woman on suspicion of attempted murder after she abandoned her newborn baby daughter in a business hotel’s toilet.

According to police, Miki Ozawa lives in Fujieda City, but works in the business hotel. At around 9:30 a.m. on June 10, a male hotel employee heard a baby crying in the women’s toilet and found the infant, with her umbilical cord still attached, in a trash bin.

The child welfare center has placed the baby, whose health is reportedly in good condition, in protective custody.

Ozawa, who is not married, was working on June 10. Police quoted her as saying she gave birth to her daughter inside the hotel’s toilet and left her there because she didn’t know how to deal with the situation.

Her colleagues said they were not aware of her pregnancy.

While we can all be angry about the women, I think we should be relieved the baby survived. Hope the baby finds a loving home.

It's awful that this young lady and child are in this situation. This happens a lot in the world. Some countries have a 'no questions asked' policy when leaving new borns at hospitals, others criminalize the mothers'. Don't see how this is solved... terrible and sad situation all around.

Is this a common thing young women do in Japan? I read about the same situation a couple months ago happening in Saitama prefecture. I can't believe it!

What she did was wrong and unjustifiable. But we are not in her situation. There are many ignorant people in the world that don’t know about the options they have. Furthermore, there are many people that don’t have support from anyone and see it as a hopeless situation.

I can’t agree with her actions. But I am in no position to judge her on those actions.

@Marcus Garcia

Many time we blame the women in these situations. We usually don’t ask where are the fathers? There are many men out there that just abandon a woman in these situations leaving it up to the woman to be the mother and father.

"she didn’t know how to deal with the situation." ok, it sounds like she does not have a partner or husband to help her, May be the education board aught to look at addressing the poor sex education program in schools, it would teach boys and girls to look after them selfs and there new babies.

found the infant, with her umbilical cord still attached, in a trash bin.

Dumped in the trash. So, she had the baby, threw it in the trash and went back to work. How bloody wonderful! These kinds of (repeating) incidents make me disgusted beyond anger. You think of all the millions of couples around the world who are struggling to have babies and this trout just tosses it in the bin. How absolutely disgusting!

If they had more baby-hatches this woman would not be under arrest. As it is, she'll probably be let off with a slap on the wrist and forced to keep the baby, until she does it right next time. Seriously.... there are lots of people who want a baby. If someone does not, give them a choice to give it up; not in a coin locker or trash bin, but in an anonymous place there the baby will be saved, safe, and loved.

The one epidemic Human disease which so many Humans suffer but so few Humans have any sympathy for because so few Humans have enough capacity to see beyond their own crippled emotional responses: OVERWHELMING DESPERATION. A young, naive girl in a situation in which she is trapped by the insane internal conflicts our conscienceless societies build into us that also make us blind to the enormous personal Human tragedy that occurred in that bathroom where a completely unprepared mind tried to find behavior adequate to absolute bloody horror and panic and, unsurprisingly, fails...and then we abuse her further. That's us, alright! Let's take insanity, the person made crazy by personal events growing worse and worse over months and months, driven mad by "What will I do?" "What will I do?" and let's stone her, abuse her, moronically condemn her as if we, ourselves, might not ever face such insolvable horror, as if, as Humans we are above such insanity. Desperation. Get used to it. It is growing exponentially in the quiet places of the collective Human mind and you ain't seen nutthin' of the 'desperation' that is coming.

The posters above me have nailed it completely! The pressures on this woman, a 23 year old, would be almost insurmountable in her mind.

The confusion, the shock, the repercussions, the family criticism, societal criticism etc would most likely be terrifying for her to come to terms with.

This young lady should not be punished. She should be helped and given reassurance that she will be added.

9 months to get it together.

A baby doesn't just "drop" one day.

What kind of denial a person lives in, when they can't accept the reality that lives inside them.

There comes a time when you must act, one way or another.

This "hiding in your mind" so as to not face reality is ridiculous.

Maybe she doesn't deserve jail time, but dayum...

That baby deserves better, 23 is a grown woman.

Her colleagues said they were not aware of her pregnancy.

Are you serious?

In the confusion of an unexpected birth, while at work, having it in the most logical place for privacy - the rest room - where else but the trash bin to hide it? I’d cut her some slack and let the doctors and family work it out. Of course if my assumptions don’t hold, throw the book at her.

May this child be blessed with a bright future.

About the mother, I'll only add something to consider, denial pregnancies...

"One in 2,500 women make it all the way to labor before they understand they're going to have a baby. That's about three times more common than a woman's chance of having triplets"

"she didn’t know how to deal with the situation"

That makes no sense she had 9 months to figure out what to do when the time came. At least the babies health was in good condition, so she took care of herself and the baby while pregnant. What a way for the baby to start it's life ....Being discarded like trash by her own mother.... Sad Story

Probably very overweight, hence not showing.
