Hyogo man arrested for creating biohazard zone with his 'own' pee

In the Japanese hazardous material response system, the people are represented by two separate but equally important groups: The police who investigate crime, and the firefighters who protect the public from dangers. This is one of their stories.

On Oct 26, numerous people began reporting a highly foul odor in the vicinity of JR Akashi Station in Akashi City, Hyogo Prefecture. The Akashi Fire Department rushed to the scene and investigated what was described as an intense ammonia smell. There, they traced the funk to some liquid that had been dumped in nearby shrubbery.

Police also arrived on the scene and each department took samples of the liquid for analysis. The police lab ran a test for toxic components but found none. Instead the fluid was found to have contained elements commonly seen in human urine.

A subsequent investigation by law enforcement traced the pee back to a 42-year-old part-time worker who lived in Akashi. He reportedly admitted to the crime saying, “I dumped my own pee,” adding, “I thought it would be nourishing as a fertilizer." Then he said: “I got it from my mother over five years ago, and it seemed like a waste to just throw it away.”

Those explanations that somehow makes everything even more confusing. Was it his pee or his mother’s? If it was his, why was his mom holding on to it? Why would he choose to “fertilize” the heavily developed side of Akashi Station and not the 135-acre park covered in trees right on the other side of the station?

Needless to say, people online had a lot of comments about this.

“The smell…”

“That’s some vintage urine. Must have mellowed something awful.”

“Amazing. Urine becomes very powerful after a few years.”

“I don’t get it. He got his own urine from his mother?”

“That is a chemical weapon.”

“I feel bad for the lab people who had to analyze the stuff. Thank you for your service.”

“He was marking his territory.”

“He got arrested for that? People puke and poop on the street all the time.”

“He should have sold it online as an ‘Akashi 20-year single malt.'”

“Sounds like he’s a bottler.”

“Bottler” is a Japanese term for a person who plays online games so consistently that they pee into bottles rather than step away from the screen for even a moment. This actually might explain a lot, including the suspect’s piss-poor knowledge of agricultural practices which, by the way, resulted in all the shrubbery that came in contact with the pee getting cut down and incinerated.

The suspect is currently facing charges of damage to property. However, the fire department had run their own analysis of the pee, finding hazardous sodium arsenite and ammonium perchlorate in the process. This may lead to further criminal charges for violating the Poisonous and Harmful Substances Control Act.

A distinct lack of commonsense on display...

Then he said: “I got it from my mother over five years ago, and it seemed like a waste to just throw it away.”

just when you think you've heard it all....

I've sen quite a few cases like this with Japanese people collecting their own urine. There was one maybe two years ago they found a homeless guy living in the roof of a public toilet and there was 80 liters of his urine stored in water bottles in the roof with him. A couple of months ago I saw about twenty bottles of urine dumped in the median strip on a main road. There has also been a few cases of creeps throwing their urine on women. It's a pretty creepy and disgusting fetish.

Interesting plot twist.

Maybe he was trying to fight off those ghosts in Death Stranding using urine grenades.

A realtor friend of mine cleaning out a unit found a bag containing four kilogrammes of nail clippings. Some people are just crazy.

So, the urine angle was just click-bait after all...

Depends on the concentration. Ammonium perchlorate is a common substance in urine, it all depends on the concentration. Likewise, arsenic is commonly adsorbed by most of us as it is naturally present in the environment. Arsenite levels in Japanese people are 3~10 times higher than those in the North American population as seaweed is relatively high in arsenic (https://www.jstage.jst.go.jp/article/joh/49/3/49_3_217/_pdf)

If it was urine from his mother that was years old, one wonders if it may have concentrated through some of it evaporating. I can only imagine what other chemical reactions may have occurred in years old urine as compounds break down (the urea breaking down to ammonium compounds for example).

I guess if his mother is now deceased, it’s possible he held onto it out of some weird attachment, or something.

Does this fall under スメルハラ, or do we need another addition to the litany of off putting behaviours which serve only to lend credence to the view that many people here, contrary to all the omotenashi wishful thinking, are NOT are not at all enamoured of one another?

i like guessing games. Checking out the color of the full 1 liter bottles of piss along the highway trying to guess how healthy the truck driver is.

I guess you could say the people were pissed off.

“I got it from my mother over five years ago, and it seemed like a waste to just throw it away.”

Yeah... the waste would have been wasted if it was just excreted down the toilet. Makes sense. Either the man and his mother (assuming he is not lying) are completely insane, or their is something bigger at play: like the guy is insane and paranoid about doping, so he was keeping "clean" urine samples in case he ate poppy seeds or something. I mean, the Olympics ARE only a year away. And of course, we all know human urine is a great fertiliser.

Maybe the poor bloke accidentally drank a glass of an average Korean beer, like Lotte, or Max?....Therefore the chemical hazard may find a non-criminal explanation!

all the shrubbery that came in contact with the pee getting cut down and incinerated.

Extreme over-kill. What is wrong with these people?

This may lead to further criminal charges for violating the Poisonous and Harmful Substances Control Act.

They say ignorance is no excuse for breaking the law as if any who made it or now enforce it had any idea about the contents of aged urine themselves. I hope they have the sense to get off this guy's case being as peeing outside is so common here I once had a pact with a lady to honk whenever we saw someone doing it openly with no attempt to hide it.
