What? This news item stricks home like a lightning bolt from the Hague. I have always thought that the International Criminal Court has only one home. For the ICC to have a branch in Japan or any other country does

weaken or lessen its trusted world renowned authority.

Please, NOT in Tokyo, it will just create even worse concentration. Fukuoka or Osaka.

Kibosha

We don’t want that here in Osaka, Tokyo wants the attention, so you gotta take the junk that comes with it.

Basically an ICC fundraising office

I wonder if this means that they are finally going to go after the Dutch army folks for the crimes they allegedly committed in Indonesia in the 1950's.

Does that mean that the US would simultaneously attack and defend Japan if the court here were to try an American?

This may come as a shock to you but no, we don't attack countries just because an American citizen is charged and tried under their laws.

Japan does extradite its citizens. International marriages with abducted children from other countries is a problem for their fathers.

How will it work will Japanese laws? Would they try cases here? The building and running costs paid for by the ICC?

but some major countries such as the United States, China, India and Indonesia, are not members.

Wonder when the US would become a member, and when it will ratify unclos too

"Dutch PM apologises for state’s role in abuses in 1940s Indonesian war" Guardian Feb 2022. "The research, conducted by the Royal Netherlands Institute of Southeast Asian and Caribbean Studies, the Netherlands Institute of Military History and the Institute for War, Holocaust and Genocide Studies, will be published in 14 books, including a summary volume, Beyond the Pale: Dutch Extreme Violence in the Indonesian War of Independence, 1945-1949."

@ossan America

Look ip the “Hague Invasion Act,” a law passed for the express purpose of doing just that. Of course it refers only to the ICC, not local laws.

I’m not sure that Japan gives off a good image when it come to “JUSTICE “. Perhaps somewhere else might be better, somewhere that has a just and fair legal system, especially for non Japanese.

A presence in Japan might be as good thing. It’s not like Japan has done much to enforce Hague convention orders on international child abduction, even though in theory they are bound to do so, having ratified the treaty into law.

@BigP

I COMPLETELY agree with you, man, and this is based off of most non-Japanese treatment of foreigners in certain situations such as parental abductions and from personal experience.

Does that mean that the US would simultaneously attack and defend Japan if the court here were to try an American? Will they have to change the name of the law to 'The Hague/Tokyo Invasion Act'?

-4 ( +1 / -5 )

Not sure how I feel about this. Would this help or make things worse for the already mistreated foreigners here in Japan?

So true. I have to shake my head in amazement.

I'll second that.

I didn't know today was April fools!

Me neither!

The country that hid Alberto Fujimori, (claimed he never relinquished his citizenship despite being born in Peru and serving as president of the country) refused to return him to Peru to face charge of

Human rights abuses, murder, kidnapping, embezzlement, abuse of power, bribery and corruption.

EXACTLY!

This is the country they think should have a human rights tribunal?

Heck Japan can't even treat non Japanese here with respect do I need to remind the international Body about the Dead SriLankan and dead Israeli that died in custody for the refusal of the Japanese authority to let them get medical treatment?!

Not to mention the hostage justice, and the fact that prosecutors can actually LEGALLY hide evidence from the defense to get a conviction! LEGALLY! AND the fact that Japan is 1 of 3 countries in Asia that does not provide the defendant with a lawyer upon arrest- the other 2 being China and North Korea!

What does ICC President Piotr Hofmanski actually know about Japan? What an idiot!

Japan is one of the ICC's biggest and most reliable partners, he added.

Welcome to Japan ICC!

Might I direct you to a place called Nagatacho?

Have you heard of the Panama and Pandora Paper investigations, where several prominent members of the ruling party, including former PM Abe, names appear?

Have you heard of the Unification Church?

-5 ( +18 / -23 )

I hope they do, Japan will be a good place to have it for so many reasons.
