Identity fraud cases on the increase in Tokyo, police warn

The Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department reported Tuesday that losses from cases of identity fraud in the first half of this year increased by 2.5 billion yen over the previous year's figure.

According to police figures, 764 cases of identity fraud were reported in the capital in the first half of this year. The figure is a slight decrease on last year's figure, but the amount stolen is higher, having already surpassed 20 billion yen, Sankei Shimbun reported.

Police say that in most of the cases, the money was handed over in person and that the amount of money lost in each case has been slightly higher, on average, than last year. Police say the report rate of cases in which at least 10 million yen is stolen is more than double that of last year.

Ask the gullible victims in the UK, US and Australia about Nigerian scammers...

The nigerian scams are a bit different. They are more like business transactions. These are more just "your son is in trouble and he needs money" or " I am your son and i need money, but I'm going to send some stranger to pick it up for me."

For a lot of people it just seems unbelievable that someone would just hand over that much money to someone they dont know.
