Police filed charges against the manager of a fire brigade in Sakai City, Osaka Prefecture, on Wednesday after the man reportedly lied to authorities and told them he had been robbed.
Fire department section manager Toshihiro Yamada, 54, reportedly borrowed 700,000 yen from an acquaintance with the intention of paying it back with his bonus. On June 30, after the summer bonus was deposited into Yamada's account, he called police and told them that he was robbed of an envelope containing 490,000 yen and his mobile phone when he was at the bank that morning.
After the incident, the Sakai fire department said they discovered the "lost" mobile phone in Yamada's car and reported it to police. Yamada told police that he was upset to have his entire bonus disappear all at once.© News reports
