First of I am glad they got all of the scum involved and pray that the woman will overcome this.

Second, after all of the stories about shady tour guides/cab drivers in India and other countries, what was she thinking hopping alone on this man's motorcycle? After the big ordeal with the last young Japanese woman, why did she think she was immuned to crime. I know she is a victim and I feel bad for her but I think she will catch a lot of criticism for this no doubt.

Japanese women tourists are like sheep when overseas and rarely report assaults. These ba*tards know this and target them. I remember in London in the 1980's and 90's the Brixton boys would target them at clubs and do their evil raping and robbery and get away scott free.

Every time this kind of crime is reported, many people post comments like, "what was she thinking," etc. In hindsight, she made a mistake in judgement which I'm sure she regrets.

...why did she think she was immuned to crime. I know she is a victim and I feel bad for her but I think she will catch a lot of criticism for this no doubt.

The criticism is from you. The question I have is, what is missing from the emotional development of people that allows them to display such obvious lack of empathy. Or perhaps it's anonymity that diminished people's social awareness.

What is it with India and raping women?

While I expect you'll get a lot of responses, I fear the answer may be too complex for an internet forum.

This is Shame for us, Indians. We are facing it as major issue and many Goverment and Non Govt institutes are working against it. Women Security is also treated as national issue like corruption, unemployment, development, pollution, population etc. Whenever my Japanese friends asks me about India tour, places, dos n donts. I always mention don't trust unknown, don't eat anything from unknown, don't go to remote place alone. India is beautiful and has rich heritage. There are lot to offer for tourists. But we Indians are ugly and shameless people who are insulting its glorious heritage and raping India's beauty.

She will not be the last Japanese to be raped while on an overseas tours. Japanese women still do not have that sense of caution. It is not Japan when you are overseas.

She was stupid enough to trust a stranger in India. It could be Malaysia, Thailand or a Latin American country. No matter. Just do not go with locals who are not from well-established tour agencies unless you are prepared for the horrors of a rape of even being killed.

Your comment suggests, if I haven't got it wrong, that in Japan women will be safer. There is in fact a lot of unreported date rape and domestic violence here. All around the world women face violence and we have to make efforts to raise awareness, such as the events associated with The One Billion Rising movement, happening around the globe today, but not in Japan it seems.

@DaDude

I totally agree. Even little kids are taught not to go off with strangers. As much as I feel for her, this could have totally been avoided if she used common sense.

Glad they got him. And he's certainly going to face the government's wrath on this.

RE: "don't trust unknown, don't eat anything from unknown, don't go to remote place alone. we Indians are ugly and shameless people insulting its glorious heritage and raping India's beauty" and this from an honest Indian? Well this person said it, Indians can't be trusted but so too a danger for anyone traveling alone and doesn't do enough research concerning safety to where one is traveling and using the known protocols that help minimize risk.

Re: "Latin America"? Please this can happen in any country, so stop being a bigot and starting a fire where there is none, this is about a rape that occurred and has occurred specifically to India, and India alone, it can happen in any country one visits. Shameless and thoughtless thinking by naming other countries that have nothing to do with this article.

it can be only cured by education.

This low life scumbag caused severe pains to a defenseless woman. His punishments must be equally severe to his crime; moreover, he will be rotten in hell. Too many of such news occurred in E. Asian nations which said a lot about certain mentality of these trashy criminals. Governments must step up to deter such ugliness. What a shame.

Traveling to a foreign country can be a unique and exciting yet sometimes challenging especially when going alone. For a female it is different and potentially dangerous risk can occur and without warning. Being aware of the risks involved and making smart decisions can make the experience all the more safe. This women was not wise. Never go out with a local stranger period. Unfortunately in this modern world the risks involved have gotten too great for any girl to be traveling alone. Some of the best and safest travel tours abroad available are those that offer the intimacy and small, specialized groups or women travel clubs. Women of all ages can find travel companions with similar interest and taking a trip with a group of women often can be more fun and less stressful. You really can experience the ultimate tours and vacations for women.

There's really something wrong with this culture, their men and how they view women. These kind of atrocities have been showing up in the news in the last several years, but I'd bet it's been going on for far longer. The women are slowly finding their voice to speak up against these crimes that in the past have been ashamed to report to the authorities. Good on them.

Indian men need to speak up against these atrocities. The onus is on them. Anytime there's news like this, they will be seen as filthy, horny sleazebags who will rape at will, whether they like it or not. The world is watching.

@bjohnson23: I am not an honest Indian. I am a selfish countryman who is concerned with this kind of crime. It may be happening everywhere but when it comes to my country I feel ashamed. I love my country and I only wish my country to be liked, appreciated and looked upon as a positive contributer to the world. We are a developing country and Indian society is changing rapidly. Social and lifestyle differences are very high which may be one cause. We are trying to solve it. We can't just get away saying that see it happens everywhere. what is wrong if an Indian did it or can we??

I see a lot of "she should have done this" or "she should have known that".. How about he teach the youth how to treat and respect women.

An Indian tour guide accused of drugging and raping a Japanese woman this week in the northern city of Jaipur turned himself in to police on Friday, an officer said.

This isn't the first case of Indian's raping tourist and it won't be the last. India has a major problem that India needs to address and fix!

Glad that the Japanese government has done the right thing and warned it's people about traveling to India.

The comments about japanese women not being cautious overseas as its not Japan is funny!! Women are raped in Japan just as often as overseas! People in japan in general aren't causious towards anything, he hence the continuous easy access for pedos (male and female), child murderers and rapist etc.

Heads up always, ladies, especially when you're in foreign and unknown lands. It's true for the guys as well, but the ladies have to be even more cautious.

They got him ? Good. Let this coward brute rot in jail. Then ladies, let's keep touring the world and/or reading Charlie Hebdo as usual. That's empowering the criminals if we punish ourselves and stop living out of fear each time something happens.

Indian men need to speak up against these atrocities.

I don't agree that you lump my sweet Indian male friends (yoga teachers, businessmen; IT geniuses, students, artists....) with criminals . Do you say all Japanese men are collectively responsible for Ichihashi ? American men for Charles Manson ?

Unfortunately in this modern world the risks involved have gotten too great for any girl to be traveling alone.

You know what, grandpa ? In real life, the huge majority of the victims are male. In comparison, traveling the world is super-safe for women. And that's not only vague personal observation. Quoting Wikipedia :

According to the data given by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, worldwide, 78.7% of homicide victims are male, and in 193 of the 202 listed countries or regions, males were more likely to be killed than females. In two, the ratio was 50:50 (Swaziland and British Virgin Islands), and in the remaining 7; Tonga, Iceland, Japan, New Zealand, Republic of Korea, Latvia and Hong Kong, females were more likely to be victims of homicides compared to males.

And that's only the tip of the iceberg, as male victims are ranging from guys of your age taken to ER in heli as they went on a safari after a too big meal to being beheaded by IS...

Some of the best and safest travel tours abroad available are those that offer the intimacy and small, specialized groups or women travel clubs.

Sounds like your fantasy. And for the dudes, what to do ? Just stop issuing them passports ? Abe is working on it.

$1,600 is a lot of money in India, wait for solid evidence.

When an act is committed by a member or members of a larger group, that act reflects on the group as a whole. This is not to say that the group necessarily endorses the actions of every individual, but it does mean that the actions of individuals affect the identity and perception of the group. For instance, though a majority of Muslims are not radicalm they do have a responsibility to speak out against radicals and enforce a peaceful group identity. Moreover, if the majority of muslims were silent about extremists, the lack of criticism would appear to the rest the world as tacit appoval.

My point is that when there is a salient group identity such as religion or nationality, the actions of every individual influence that identity which every member shares. Your yoga instructors are certainly nice fellows, but they are responsible as Indians for India's identity. I think they do have some duty to engage other Indians in a discussion about women's safety in India.

You quotes of wiki seem like general crime statistics. It might be true that men are in general more often the victims of crime while women are simultaneously more often the victims of crime while travelling alone abroad.

But I think you would agree with me that more needs to be done to ensure the safety of individuals abroad.

@Mukesh Singh Bisen could you explain how much this happens in India, people forget that India has a large population so i wonder if this happen more than in other countries, or is it still that females are seen as less? Is it a Macho culture thing?

-1 ( +0 / -1 )

@Denis Bauer

is it still that females are seen as less? Is it a Macho culture thing?

Perhaps it's something to do with all the millions of females missing from India's demographic structure. India, like China, has a huge gender imbalance. That means millions of Indian men face the prospect of never having a wife, and some individuals resort to rape.

Females are undervalued. So much so they are aborted in huge numbers. If the Indian government is serious about stopping this rape culture, they should tackle this issue.
