> And.... nobody seems to care in India about the massive problem of rape, unless, unless a woman of high birth gets raped. Wouldn't want someone from an upper caste family to suffer such a thing.... then it becomes big news in India.

Women of ‘high birth’ in India are not very likely to get raped and actually rape is news in the Hindi & english language media, so don’t bark nonsense when you’ve clue about the issue :)

Crime is everywhere in this world. Before traveling research the destination and learn risk mitigation strategies to stay safe. https://medium.com/@glosecresources/blaze-your-global-trail-with-key-components-for-strengthening-your-security-safety-135f9f9c63c3

Because, Japanese people are so extremely naive. Look at the TV. Variety shows show all these talentos traveling to these sometimes dangerous places and make people think, "oh hey looks nice, i should do that too" without thinking about the consequences. Yes not only India and yes not all countries are unsafe but Japanese people really need to be more weary about their safety when they go abroad period.

Dumb comment. Most foreign women raped in India are non-Japanese :)

This could well be classified as a "Racist" assault. A person of one "Race" attacking a person of another "Race". With Malice and Aforethought to boot.

Are primary school students also active on Japan Today?

Why do people go to "India" when they know this happens? Stay away from India, there are better destinations and are safer,

Women in India don’t usually travel alone but western women do.

Indian men view western women (esp blond hair) as very exotic.

A woman in India alone has to be extremely wary as to her surroundings at all times....

A least she wasn't set on fire or had acid thrown on her face which is what happens to so many Indian women.

I'm sure nothing will happen to the guy, The girl will probably be to blame for vacationing in India. As the article said "India has a grim record of sexual violence, with nearly 40,000 rape cases reported countrywide in 2016". If rapist were punished in India do you thing the number of rapes would be so high ?? Now lets ask ourselves a question Who wants to visit India ?? it's a Giant DUMP. Seems Rape is the norm & all the guys do it after all he told her  "if she resisted the rape attempt, he would call his friends to gang-rape her," I'm sure him and his friends have done that a time or two. If you rape you should have your penis chopped off.

"raping and threatening a Japanese vacationer near a prominent Indian tourist destination"

Incredible India.

Why would anyone go to India for a vacation in the first place? Come on now. Try some where more tourist friendly like, any where else.

Because it's a very interesting country. When you're scared in advance better stay at home, obvious you're no traveller :)

-3 ( +2 / -5 )

Nobody should expect to be raped anywhere in the world.

Can't wait to find someone else who wants to travel where you want to travel or you'll never get there. On arrival, at a new location, it can be smart to hook up with other

travellers to do things together. I've met a few Japanese women when I was younger travelling in other countries and we did some things together when it was convenient. Exercising caution when travelling alone anywhere is smart, regardless of gender. Over-sharing before going can be bad too. Just ask wiggy107 https://www.csoonline.com/article/2124038/identity-access/the-final-5-tweets-of-harold-wigginbottom--tech-savvy-ceo.html

A few incidents in a location shouldn't alter anyone's travel plans unless it is clear you are a specific target. Do you worry about shark attacks just because you are in the ocean? Avalanches because you are in the mountains? Pickpockets on trains? Well, the last one YOU SHOULD be worried about, but there are steps that can be taken.

The vast majority of people in the world are nice, but just a few bad people get news coverage after doing crazy, bad, things. Live your life and don't be totally stupid.

The world is amazing. Nobody can see it all, but seeing lots of it can be a joy.

Unfortunately it happens sometimes. No need to blame the victim as often happens in these cases. Many female tourists go to India without issues.

Other than the rapes and the high risk of Delhi Belly, India sounds like a swell place.

And yes, if women want to roll the dice in an area where there is constant news of mistreatment towards women, then they have every right to roll away and assert their right as women in the 21st Century. I'm sure potential rapists will give her a pass, because, well, because that's how the world should be.

I have met Japanese women that travelled solo to India and made it back unscathed. It is funny though because everyone that I have met who have gone to India either had the time of their lives or worst experience of their lives, nothing in between.

And they killed the girl in the end, too.

A whole bunch of men kept and raped a young Muslim girl in a Hindu temple not long ago and the local police were trying to protect the scumbags. So this really doesn't surprise me. This is one of the 'less serious' stories.

wouldn't recommend any women to travel to india or any 3rd world country without a proper big strong man with her..

Common sense helps not a 'big strong man', A few years ago A Danish women was raped by several man in front of her partner. What do you do confronted with a number of knife points?

the way those sub cultures see women alone is basically a low hanging fruit, and its the majority that has this view.

On which knowledge do you base this?

I lived there before and had to stay in a hotel highly security guarded hotel, with hotel secure taxi service.

From what I saw on youtube, there is a lot of loitering at all kinds of hours there, a good impetus for mischief.

India is so unsafe for women, not just tourists but for everyone living there too, I would urge Japan travel agents to not let women / couples or even group of women travel to remote places in India and any city unless they know someone locally. Its shame these crimes keep happening and women are still going there.

nothing to do with her being Japanese, tons of women raped there daily from many different country's

I'm guessing that any woman who is traveling to India is probably pretty well read. She knew what the risks were but never thought it would happen to her. That is not on her, that is on the animal that raped her. He should be locked up for the rest of his life.

Some Japanese women don't read the news or know about world events.

Silly assumption about J women, the article mentions women of other nationalities being raped too.

I've been travelling intensively in India in the late nineties and the beginning of this century and always told women back home that traveling with public transport was save for women. Things have changed since than and might have something to do that the number of men exceeds the number of women more and more plus the stimula on internet.

You mean the string of incessant rapes, not to mention, how they prey on female tourist handbags. And dont let me start talking about their insane police corruption. (they always have their hands out) I lived there before and had to stay in a hotel highly security guarded hotel, with hotel secure taxi service, because many of their taxi drivers are scammers.

I would just do what I can and probably convince them not to go alone, tell them to find a travel partner or accompany them myself. You see, it is a matter of knowing what you can do, not leaving it to chance and the shikata ga nai way of life...

I would not let one of my girls do that personally. Stay at least with another person.

> You think you can control what a 30 year old woman does? That's pretty victim blaming. Also, out wouldn't help, because there have been cases where the woman was with a man, and they just beat up the man and gang raped the woman anyway. How about a new law that rape is punishable by hanging

Amazed that he was arrested based on a description given by the victim.

I am amazed that lone woman go for trips in some countries.

Good he was arrested, but what will be his penalty ? Does it deter over potential rapists ? Hell probably no.
