how did he expect the X-ray machines not to pick this up. hope he has to rot in an Indonesian prison, not a japanese one.

The only way he could have gotten away with it is if he had connections in the airport - Airport personnel, Customs officials can be corrupted.

If the money is that lucrative, should have just hired a boat and made the long trip back.  Odds are he would not have been stopped by any customs officials coming in or going out.

The trip by boat from Indonesia passed through pirate infested waters, then terrorist infested waters, militralised waters, and by the time he reached Japan, they would all be dead anyway. That might be one reason.

"holding Platinum Elite Plus status with Garuda airlines", there must be a lot of money in it and he's a professional smuggler having already been arrested in Australia. Maybe he became overly confident and didn't bribe enough airport officials this time.

Katsuhide Naito was arrested after customs officers found 181 lizards, 65 snakes and seven turtles in his luggage.

What type of luggage does this guy have?

Reptile smuggler. Must have done this countless times, supplying exotic pet fans throughout Japan at least. Hope the 3 years and 5 years do not run concurrently.

His only regret may be that someone else will step in and take over his lucrative trade.
