Police in Yokohama have arrested a 20-year-old woman on suspicion of abandoning the body of her newborn baby in a park.

According to police, Miyabi Nomura, a part-time worker, has admitted to leaving the infant in the park which is about one kilometer from her home in Seya Ward, Kyodo News reported. The infant’s body was found by a nearby resident walking in the park on Friday afternoon.

Police said that an autopsy will be conducted to determine the cause of death.

Nomura surfaced as a suspect after an analysis of surveillance camera footage showed her carrying a bag in the park at the time the infant is believed to have been left there.

That's some amazing police work identifying somebody from a surveillance camera who is undoubtedly wearing a mask.

Would have been a lot harder had she not had her smart phone with her.

Wonder where was the father? Maybe the guys from the comment section who accuse her of being a horrible mother know?

Everybody is quick to blame the girl and while her actions are illegal and inhumane, it's worth considering that Japanese men don't love to use condoms and if a girl gets pregnant they escape more often than not, or don't share the cost of an abortion. So if said girl was broke and ashamed to talk to her parents, she probably gave birth in a bathroom, or a combini or another random place (remember the dozens of similar articles posted all the time here), was in postnatal distress which is hormonal chaos, or even full-blown postnatal depression and acted like this.

She is the perpetrator, but I believe the problem doesn't start with her. She's part of a much bigger issue. I don't believe she would be as inclined to brutally abandon her baby if she had a supportive environment and partner. I'm also thinking about the later implications of a human who has conceived, probably gave birth alone (!), then killed their baby, put them in a bag, left them in a park, went to jail and sometime they're gonna come out. Japan is full of girls and women like that, people who've had severe mental damage, but walk among everybody else. Who also has unchecked mental damage due to other tragic realities of Japanese society, such as the stigma surrounding mental health and the impenetrable Japanese mentality of suppressing one's expression and feelings in order to preserve group harmony. I love Japan and its many virtues, but it's a country full of rampant mental illness and vicious cycles of abuse and nobody is doing anything about it.

A woman of 20 years leaving her lifeless new born baby on a park bench is arrested by the police? How could the police arrest this young woman who likely has just lost her baby? Their very first duty is to be kind and to help her.

This is like a parody of a bleeding heart liberal.

Tragic story.

Japan has cameras placed in most of Kanto. It is pretty hard to get away with crimes these days.

there are a lot of cameras out there. They could certainly identify you, just pick you up on the next camera.

Meaning, no one can call her a poor of excuse of a mom, monster, nor empathize with her yet.

From my understanding: In Japan, in order to get an abortion, the father of the child has to agree AND sign a document. This puts a damper on things if you don’t know who the father is, exactly

That poor helpless child, born to a hideous excuse for a mother. God rest your little soul.

No love, no effort at accomplishing the parental responsibilities.

Empathize with the young women.

I empathize more with the neglected and/or abused babies and/or children who suffer and/or die.

Imagine what type of "mother" could abandon her helpless baby in this way. Callous.

Time for a public information campaign to remind everyone what the baby hatches down at the firehouse are for.
