Police in Yachiyo, Chiba Prefecture, are looking for the person or persons responsible for breaking into a junior high school and leaving a tap running overnight in a classroom.

According to police, the incident occurred at Owada Junior High School late Saturday night or early Sunday morning. Sankei Shimbun reported that a school staff member discovered the flooded classroom on the 4th floor at around 7 a.m. Sunday and notified police. The water had trickled down the stairs into classrooms on the third and second floors as well.

Police said the building was locked when the last teacher went home at 9:30 p.m. on Saturday.

Meanwhile, local media reported that the same incident occurred at another school two kilometers away on Sept 5.

In my neighbourhood there are old guys who like to don the arm-band of law enforcement and stand around the station all hours in case someone parks their bike illegally so that they can issue the offending bike with a warning ticket. This is a job for them. Hall monitors for after hours. I have no doubt they would relish the opportunity to wear some sort of shiny vest.

This kind of thing can't happen here. All of the schools in the school division I work at have all hallways and entrances/exits monitored with security cameras. While you won't catch someone in the act in a classroom on camera, it's a simple matter to check who was the last person to leave the room before the flooding was discovered.

This happened in the US at a University too. Just over $1 million in damage. It was certainly newsworthy.

"Last teacher went home at 9:30 PM on a Saturday. Why not just sleep over?"

Teachers are not security guards.

Sounds like the suspect is kind of a criminal for pleasure.

Last teacher went home at 9:30 PM on a Saturday. Why not just sleep over? Time and a half after 4:30 - double time on weekends - triple time after 4:30 on weekends would help curtail excessive demands.

Six or so months ago was a case in Japan where a physical education teacher left a tap running to top up a pool and forgot about it. The bill from the water authority was about $10,000. They made him pay it with the principals chipping in.

Classic teenage boys dare

Leaving the water running alone is not going to cause flooding. This sounds more, as sensei implied, like a teenage prank.

Betcha it's a teenage male prankster
