Police in Kawasaki have arrested a 57-year-old man after he got off a train that was temporarily stopped between stations on the JR Tokaido Line on Wednesday night.
According to police, the incident occurred at around 7:15 p.m., Fuji TV reported. The train stopped between JR Kawasaki and Kamata stations. Police said the man banged against the conductor's window after getting upset that the train had stopped.
The man got out of the train car by using an emergency door handle and started throwing stones at the conductor's cabin. The conductor chased the man and caught up with him about one kilometer from Kawasaki Station.
The man was arrested at Kawasaki Station for obstruction of business. Police said the man was drunk at the time of his arrest and quoted him as saying he was dissatisfied with the lack of information in the announcement about why the train stopped.
Sankei Shimbun reported that train services were halted for about 40 minutes after a suspected groper jumped onto the tracks at Yokohama to avoid being caught.

Ah, as soon as I read the headline I said to myself, "I bet it was some drunken jiji!" and I was right! What's the bet the groper was also drunk?
HongoTAFEinmate
Drunk at the time, who would have guessed?
Stewart Gale
I love how he started throwing stones at the train, nice touch.

Hmm . . . . JR Tokaido Line. Used that a few times in the distant past, but imo JR Saikyo Line had the worst drunks I can remember.
Cortes Elijah
Chased him for 1KM???? Damn... And the people in the train? Left there alone? All in all kudos to the conductor.

Suspected groper's target , a school girl by any chance? Dissatisfied passenger, throwing stones at train. This place really is full of immature little men.
Jeff Ogrisseg
So, where's the rest of the story about the suspected groper jumping onto the tracks?
nakanoguy01
pretty gutsy, and cool, of the conductor to get out and chase the drunk jiji. and why no mention of the man's name? he needs to be famed and shamed, like the groper.
TheGodfather
Well done to the girl for reporting it!!! :-)
Vernie Jefferies
Gosh! All of this happened during evening rush hour. Definitely not a good day on the commute.
Mr. Noidall
This ish is hilarious. Only in Japan.

Coming from Sydney I would never once be annoyed or surprised if a bus or a train turned up 5-10 minutes late, but ever since coming to Japan I find myself getting incredibly annoyed at even a 20-second delay, so I sort of get that he might have lost it being drunk and all

So the groper escapes and a drunk gets busted?
Fate has a funny way of evening the score.

Is this why Japanese girls/women are encouraged NOT to report the chikan??
Because it causes too much trouble for everyone??
DaDude
I thought that is what it said the first time I read this article. No, they caught him 1KM from Kawasaki Station and who knows how far they ram.
Mlodinow
@Cortes
It says he caught up with him 1km from Kawasaki station, not that he chased for 1km. Although if he was arrested at Kawasaki station it means that he or other staff marched him to the station where the police were waiting?
BurakuminDes
Imagine the conversation between the two, if by chance they ended up celling together!
"So, what are you in for?"
"Ah, just a little groping...and jumping onto the tracks. And you"
"What a coincidence! Im also in for jumping onto the tracks! ...and throwing rocks at the conductor... Great to meet you!"
Ahh, Japan. Dont change - we need the daily comedy fix!
Pidestroika
No comedy at all! Because of these two A(capital)$#"%&' I was imobilized in Tabata for more than 40 mins and arrived home by taxi an hour later completely exhausted after a long day's work. Who's gonna pay me back the 2500yen of the taxi? Who's gonna compensate me for the all the trouble? Why JR doesn't give other passengers the right to sue these two for damages? I could use the 56yo drunk's house.
smithinjapan
This would be a trifecta if you could bet on the three major reasons this kind of delay and/or problems occur on trains here: a) a groper, b) someone jumped on the tracks (not a suicide, but still), c) some drunk oyaji.
I can understand being upset at a delay, but all this needs is some Benny Hill music and it's even more of a classic!
Davnetcat
Too funny, but fitting.

A nutter day in Japan

The guy was "drunk" and yet he ran a kilometer before the sober conductor could catch him? That doesn't make sense. And is a conductor allowed to leave the train unattended? That is scary. Overall, there has been a serious decline in keeping to schedules. Half the time you get on the Fukutoshin Line, it is off schedule. Same for other lines.
David Wagner
It all started with a lack of information about why the train had stopped. Welcome to the world of indirect communication.
nath
No, he was drunk and he ran. The place he was caught was a kilometer from the station, but the train he got off of was not at the station (it was in between stations), so from the article there is no way of knowing how far he ran.

I think a better headline would be, "Irate Passenger Arrested After Throwing Rocks at Train."
shonanbb
The conductor abandoned his post. So the train was stuck longer.
TeaTeaTea
My friend was trapped on a different train that night because of this. He said they basically switched everything off apart from the lights and everyone was becoming rather PO'd because of the lack of oxygen.
Fadamor
Really? I didn't realize trains in Japan were air-tight.
nath
The shinkansen is pressurized. But this wasn't a shinkansen.
JeffLee
I think it was referring about being forced to breath each other's breath. Although carban dioxide level would be relatively high, it's gross more than dangerous.

Drunk at the time, who would have guessed?
It could have been stress.
