Oh, great! So that means this psycho is back in the community. How wonderful!

If they proved him to be criminally insane shouldn’t his sentence be extended and carried out in a mental institution? Surely they aren’t just going to let him out.

Wow, the defense did what they are suppose to do here, well done. After two evaluations by two different  psychiatrists there should be no doubt that the man is insane

Another loose nut in this world full of nuts.

Acquital because of insanity? Yes. This is the right thing to do in this case. But and this is a very big but, if the prisoner is let free, he is capable of more insane acts. He needs be sent to a special hospital for curing schizophrenia patients. Until he has completely recovered. And if he cannot be cured he should stay indefinitely in the hospital.

Pity there isn't one. Anywhere.

A not criminally responsible due to insanity or mental disability plea is not the get-out-of-jail-free card that many seem to think it is.

In most cases it results in being institutionalized for life or at least much longer than a regular sentence, as you are at the mercy of the psychiatrists and DA to determine you fit to return to society.

I real life, the Hollywood “insanity plea” is really only used as a last resort to avoid the death penalty.

What about the cop? Did he fully recover? Does he have PTSD? Scars from the stabbing? Surely he was chastised by fellow overpaid underworked policemen in his department. He probably is overlooked for promotions and salary raises, as well. While it is fascinating to read the lunatics will be released, it would be nice to know the full story...Perhaps a follow-up article is in order?

No a psycho is not back in the community. Your clearly have no knowledge of schizophrenia apart from the stereotypes you read. 99% of schizophrenics are working in society and you don’t even know it. At that time he was “I’ll”. Once he takes his medication, he will be fine. Paranoia makes people make irrational choices. Most schizophrenics are a danger to themselves. I’d be more worried about normal people, or even cops who force confessions or in the US, getting out alive. They showed he was “I’ll” at the time of his crime, but it depends on the degree of his symptoms.

with comments lien yours no wonder mental health professionals have a hard time and patients get stigmatized.

Pity there isn't one. Anywhere.

There are at least 3 major psychiatric hospitals in Okinawa, right now, that have "special hospital for curing schizophrenia patients. "

Pity you dont know about them.

Do you even stop to read articles before making comments? Really now, read the article and you will find the answer to your questions here!

Oh and the folks who are "thumbing" this post up, are oblivious to reality here too!

I can’t find a single source indicating there is a cure for schizophrenia. Everything says can only be treated with lifelong care to manage it.

I think something is probably wrong with the wording or translation if a hospital claims to be able to cure it.

It’s the same for any mental illness. They can be treated with psychiatric medication, but no psychiatrist or medical doctor has ever credibly claimed to have cured a mental illness.

If someone has cured schizophrenia, it would be a first and publicized widely. If someone can find a source to say schizophrenia or any mental illness has been cured, I’d like to read it.

Peter

Correct old top, there is no way to cure schizophrenia at present and the patient needs to be medicated daily for life if he has extreme symptoms like this fellow

Crazy; go to a mental detainment facility.

average Joe criminal; go to a prison.

homeless old person; go to a care home on an isolated island.

Serious youth offender; one month boot camp then two years tagged, working on a potato farm in Hokkaido.

politician; be quite for three years then resurface.

reform is needed.

This incident occurred very close to me, and made me feel empathetic to the victim. The young policeman was lured to the site of the crime by a 119 call and ambushed. The attacker had traveled from Tokyo to Osaka to carry out the crime. Apparently he wanted to steal the policeman's gun. I believe the father informed the authorities that his son may have been the attacker. I agree with the readers who are afraid that this guy might attack another innocent person again.

In other words the reverse ruling sends out the message that if you commit a crime and plead Johnny stupid you can get acquitted.

respectfully millions of patients have been cured an mental illness and your statement only pushes and reinforces stereotypes of mental illness. There are two types of mental illness.

Acute and chronic.

acute is treatable and similar to say a physical condition. It is temporary, treatment is available. Good example include reactive depression, acute anxiety, some eating disorders. Panic disorders, phobias.suicidal ideation, as part of acute depression.

chronic mental health disorders are long term and management. Eg

ADD, schizophrenia.

this would be no different to me since where there is acute medicine and chronic conditions.

Sadlt this is the difference between internet readers who actually can do more harm and help. Internet doctors and real life professional psychiatric doctors. One is real and the other just reads.

Acquitted of a criminal record, but not acquitted of forced institutionalization, for longer than a typical sentence or life.

As I mentioned earlier, contrary to what Hollywood would have you believe, the insanity or not mentally fit to be held accountable plea is usually only used to avoid the death penalty.
