Japan national volleyball team member arrested for theft

A member of the Japanese national men's volleyball team has been arrested for theft.

According to police, Wang Jingang, 30, who plays for Toray Arrows in the V.Premier League and who is based in Mishima, Shizuoka Prefecture, allegedly stole 140,000 yen in cash from a wallet after a customer left it behind at a pachinko parlor in Tokyo's Shinagawa Ward at around 8:30 p.m. on Dec 10.

Security camera footage showed Wang removing the money from the wallet, police said.

Sports Nippon reported that, following news of Wang's arrest, Toray turned down an invitation to compete in the All-Japan Volleyball Championships finals in Tokyo later this month.

Wang, who was born in Liaoning province in China, moved to Japan where he played volleyball at a high school and at Tokai University. In 2008, he was admitted to the Toray Men's Premier League, and in 2011, became a naturalized citizen.

Who cares about where he is from a thief is a thief. Bugs the hell out of me though that his team made the choice not to play in the upcoming tournament. I know, I know...it's Japan. But that doesnt make it right.

Odd... the reports I saw on TV say it was a wallet filled with cash, that he turned the wallet in to the pachinko parlor staff but a security camera caught him removing the cash first. In any case, a real dumb move.

Moderator: That is correct. The story has been updated.

Leaving behind a wallet with that much money in a place full of gambleholics will have a low return success rate no matter who took it.

Couldn't he have just said someone planted the money on him? Despite the CCTV evidence, I know a swimmer who'd believe him.

Classic example of Japanese-style self-inflicted disproportionate collective punishment.

Who cares about where he is from

I don't believe any of the comments brought up the fact of where he is from.

His name is Kongo Oh. Changed his name when he became a naturalized Japanese citizen. He became a member of the national team this year.. Pretty sure he has played his last game with the team as well..

You cannot be a good guy and a bad guy at the same time. You cannot steal half and turn the other half in and expect to walk away. Duh! If he had grabbed the wallet and just left he probably would have gotten away with it. Or gee, realize a wallet full of cash is not worth your lifetime reputation and just turn it all in. Double duh!

The ARTICLE did in the last paragraph. Yubaru was responding to what was in the article, not what was commented about the article. They probably added where he came from because his name was obviously not Japanese. I agree that it was not really relevant to the story.

All he has to do is deny it and everybody will believe him. No wait, that didn't work before...
