You should obey the rules in foreign countries, but mooning an inanimate object is only a 'public security matter' in the thinnest-skinned of dictatorships.

Incidents, such as this, show how much Japan has morally, educationally, and socially declined over the last couple of decades.

It's pretty isolated considering the 13 million Japanese who travelled abroad in 2024.

There will always be rule breakers, and always has been.

Proof that there are stupid people in every county. Nobody has a monopoly.

I have been to China and I would never due that. Exposing an orifice in China is an invitation for smog, yellow sand and other pollutants to enter your body. lol

I can't disagree with that.

But to be fair, if this couple tried mooning the Yasukuni-jinja, A-bomb dome in Hiroshima or Kinkaku-ji, there may be a similar response!

Not sure what the charge would be in Japan for mooning a world heritage site. But I'm certain it won't be for violating a "public security law".

In Japan, they'd likely cop an "indecent exposure" charge, as we sometimes see in this crime section. Rather than a violation of a "public security law", whatever that is.

In any case - it is probably wise to not expose one's buttocks or certain other parts unless in an onsen or at home!

This is one the Japanese media won’t be talking about for long

Yes, only three short paragraphs.

Foreigners doing this in Japan would get at least ten paragraphs from Sora News!

Japanese cannot complain about unruly Chinese tourists ...can they?

Why not? There are bad apples from every country traveling. No respect. Bad judgement.

Those few people impact how any other group of "them" are seen by locals. This time it was Japanese, but we've all seen poor judgement by tourists from all over. Japanese don't have the monopoly on bad behavior. Locals also show bad judgement from time to time.

Previous such acts in Japan have involved chargable crimes like property damage, grafitti, etc.

Exceot that in the 70es and 80es Japanese tourists in Asia weren't known for good behaviour either...

"Moon over the Great Wall"

Sounds quite poetic.

Should have just said they were defecating en plein air 'Chinese style'! LoL!

It's hard to separate yourself from the culture you were brought up in.

Yes, as China's immortal poet Li Bai waxed lyrical back in the Tang Dynasty:

舉頭望屁股,

低頭来警察

b) massive over reaction by China.

Don't think so. They were doing this for "views" on social media. The more I see of the streamers and the like, the more I think anyone committing an offense to gain views online should see at least 6 months in prison followed by deportation. These narcissists need a dose of hard reality.

What a double cheek! Good thing those bummers got busted for assing around!

a) 2 dumb Japanese people. I'm sure it seemed funny at the time.

b) massive over reaction by China.

They should have held them overnight (or until the Monday morning), taken them to see a judge, set a high fine - say $2000, deported them, and put them on a banned from China list for life.

Holding them 2 weeks is unacceptable for was it basically a harmless prank. Nothing was damaged.

public security law - what? There wasn't anything dangerous about showing a little cheek.

Claims that China's city air is safe just aren't true. You can find air quality maps for the entire world and see that China's cities are always "unhealthy" or "dangerous". Many cities in Asia are "unhealthy" ... Europe has some unhealthy air quality too. Then look at North America, where almost all cities are shown in green, with fewer than 5 being on the low end of "unhealthy" and only for specific reasons. Of course, there's more unhealthy air quality world-wide in warmer months.

Translate it as you like but that's not the real issue.

Hopefully these young adults learned their lesson.

China's air has improved alot because they electrified everything. It was bad in the late the 2000's but now in most cities you can't even hear the traffic.

Well there goes the idea that Japanese tourists are the epitome of courteous, polite, and respectful. Mooning the camera on the Great Wall? Seriously? How tactless and 90s of them. I'm guessing China isn't going to renew the visa-free arrangement when it expires.

This is one the Japanese media won’t be talking about for long, if at all, as it goes against their ‘problem tourist’ narrative that it’s only foreigners coming here causing mischief.
