Japanese plastics firm charged over alleged bribes to Vietnam officials

Clearly the vietnamese officials did not care and gladly accepted the bribes. And Tenma still shot itself into the foot by reporting it to Tokyo prosecutors. What happen to the saying "when in Rome, do as the romans do" ?

I was thinking it sounds like the Vietnamese are running an extortion racket.

Ouch, Japan claims itself to be flying the banner of ‘Rules based’ business models, yet…..

As much as it still may be normal business practice in much of the developing world , where its still corrupt up the buggery , Japan Inc. must make sure it doesn’t do or get caught doing same. It’ll only hurt their long term prospectives in the region as their main competitor eats corruption for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Japan must rise above.

Bribes? Just the standard MO of global bizness. But this worldwide corruption on a scale unprecedented in history is doing untold damage to the welfare of people and the environmental health of the planet .

This is just an exception, not in the sense that the company is the only one bribing officials but in the sense that it reported the bribes to the authorities. In a better world this would call for a full investigation of every other firm in similar situations to see how many have used bribes, but it is clear that the people responsible of doing that in Vietnam are not interested on doing it.

All Japanese companies dealing with SE Asia have a “slush fund”. This is special expenses to make deals go through smoothly. It’s a cultural thing and not just Japanese… China, EU, Russia etc…

it also happens in Japan. Although it’s changing now, a friend of mine used to get free business class flights and hotels for his family to go to Hawaii just for prescribing a certain drug to his patients.

I'm one with @septim dynasty. I think the very people handling goods and human imports from Vietnam is China. They have the same recipe. Sending young and beautiful girls who can mesmerized senior company officials. Hope I'm wrong but I think China has long been dreaming to unseat the US as number one having unseated Japan as number 2. They could have strong political backing. A stealth way of propagating their kind of political system.

Speaking out about official corruption in Vietnam often leads to a knock on the door around midnight.

I don't think so. Most Japanese businesses are unprofitable and low in revenues, while Chinese businesses are pretty much more profitable and doing things by themselves. What is happening in Vietnam is stereotypical like what China has done for a quite while. However, China has moved on from doing those stuffs because they are already powerful and capable without relying on foreign businesses. Vietnam still needs foreign businesses but number of those business, being Japanese, are decreasingly annually due to weak Yen, weak business, poor Japanese executives.

Tenma executives got burned by Vietnamese because their pockets are thin unlike their Korean and Chinese counterparts in Vietnam.

I assume that they will be held in detention and denied bail.

Because Tenma was bamboozled, blackmailed, extorted, and dominated by the Vietnamese bureaucrats, Party officials, and police.

The story resembles what China did and has been doing with many foreign enterprises for far too long. First, they force the IP transfers and know-how transfers to local workers. Secondly, they stealthily take over the foreign enterprise in China through nefarious means (shadow, hostile takeover). Thirdly, they will use political rules and legal matters to force the foreign enterprises to exit or pay heavy fines to stay. Fourthly, most foreign firms choose to pay heavy fines (tributes) to the local officials than exiting.

The same case happens to Tenma here! They paid the bribes to stay in Vietnam rather than exiting. However, things get out of hand as Tenma struggles with profitability, and the Vietnamese demands get more unreasonable. Tenma executives report this to the Japanese authority, so Japan can exert political pressure on Vietnam to help Tenma. Ironically, Tenma got punished by Japanese officials rather than Vietnamese officials being punished.

It appears that Japanese bureaucrats are also in league with them. Tenma hoped Japan to exert political pressure on Vietnam but they got punished instead.

Vietnamese criminality and crime syndicates run amok across Japan for years, and Japanese bureaucrats look the other way. To make matters worse, Japan is going to import more Vietnamese and give them permanent residency soon.

Recently, Sri Lankan woman died in the detention center, and Japanese bureaucrats didn't give a damn. Meanwhile, a Vietnamese intern got abused by a construction company, the Japanese justice minister immediately intervened to sort things out. Japanese executives of that construction company were arrested, while the Vietnamese intern was settled with a huge compensation package. This story should tell you how much the Japanese bureaucrats value Vietnam these days, so abandon any hope of suing Vietnamese political elites for corruption through Japanese bureaucrats!!
