Putting aside the issue of nationality, stealing animals and then selling the ill-gotten meat on social media is pretty much the stupidest crime I can think of.

No doubt Covid layoffs and the ketchiness of the authorities here has played a part, but where I come from people of this same ethnicity were once implicated in their disappearance whenever a canine went missing. Also their trainee and tokutei ginou visa is tied with their employer and particular field, it's not that easy for them to switch job even there are jobs in their area.

Lot's of foreigners who lost their jobs due to corvid had no families to go back to unlike the Japanese nationals who had.They also had little to no support and there were no flights.

And Japan still wants to attract foreign workers.

You're clearly referring to the Japanese employers and the govt. Where is the unemployment insurance for these unemployed workers? Where can they sign on for welfare income assistance? Why has a public-sector assistance organization not yet been formed, many years AFTER this program was set up? why must a temple and its volunteers provide support like meals and not the govt and employers? Where is the responsibility?

The Japanese side surely does suffer from "infant syndrome," as it did during Brazilian-Japanese immigration fiasco before.

One question: If they are here legally (on a Japanese Government approved visa) and pay taxes why should they not have access to the social net?

Buying things in social media is not a crime but these poor people just will end up confessing things that they didn't commit. Those things that they bought on social media were not illegal item at all. If it's illegal item then they should be punished.

Lot of them just lost their job in their former workplace during pandemic so they just looking cheaper items to buy or other way just to survive.

For those people to get into Japan is not that cheap for them, most of them have debt back their home just to get into program that can bring them to Japan.

Once in Japan they won't get same social net that most of Japanese would get. Also they won't have that flexibility in switching between.

So they didnt nab them on theft (unproven) but rather the illegal slaughter and then BBQing of the pigs.

Man, I bet cops in Ota must be super excited. Since nothing ever happens in that middle of nowhere place.

I'm one with some posters who think that crimes like this doesn't represent the whole foreignerdom esp Asians. But to say it's because of poverty is quite assuming. I'm one of those whose job contract wasn't extended because the company prioritize some Japanese language students cum contract workers. And hard to say but they're Vietnamese. They do it out of poverty? Come on. They looked well fed, well dressed and have leisure money to spend. Those who looked poor are those who are newly arrived and it won't last for long even. They've been raking a lot. For one, they're not even paying the right dues to the govt. Hence people like me would be receiving unemployment insurance depleting govt funds while they don't add up to the fund. One reason probably why the retirement age kept changing. I admire them for being young and doing everything to reach their dreams. I see myself in them. If only they pay their dues and don't harm the economy in the long run.

Sorry about your situation.

I agree with you that they should be paying the correct withholding tax for the safety net items such as health insurance etc. and the employer should may the required unemployment insurance.

In the case if these men who committed the crimes they should have a trial and if found guilty they should be deported.

Japan still struggles with this by not taking responsibility for these workers whom they need. Use them then abuse them will come back to bite Japan.

@TokyoEngineer, most of them work 2 jobs and have more than 48workhrs per week yet they don't contribute to Shakai Hoken. They've been enjoying too much privileges. Imagine receiving some discounts even in travel and in leisure just by showing their students ID's yet they're earning more than 15 man. There was even a time many yrs ago when I was earning around 13 man and how much do you think was the take home pay after the social insurance and the taxes were deducted? So they're claiming poverty but they're not paying the right dues. Iam the one living in poverty yet I don't steal pigs, cows, fruits and veggies. It's time the police make a surveillance on some of those ethnic mini marts perhaps or your door to door or online food sellers.

Yesterday on the Japanese TV news there was a report of a farmer who had 1000 ducks stolen. While they were actually bred to eat bugs from crop areas (rather than for food), I am sure they are now in freezers or on dinner tables.

That being said, i think they should qualify for some kind of help..Based on human decency...but that's not my fight...It s THEIR responsibility to work out a deal with the state...
