I once saw a guy kicking his girlfriend/wife as she lay on the pavement. I tried to stop, you know, being a decent person trying to do the recent thing. The way I was treated by the Japanese police….well, I learned never to get involved again. Domestic abuse seems tacitly accepted here; like extra-marital affairs.

The darker corners of Japanese ‘society’ again being exposed to the light of day.

Great that women are more accepting in opening up to their cases and reporting to the police. Men on the other hand are probably still shying away from reporting their cases as this is still viewed as weakness in Japan. Many men I know are reluctant to even talk about their abuse at home, but I know from personal experience that women can be just as abusive at home both physically and psychologically especially if the man has low income.

The surge may, in part, be an opening up to reporting. Expect other crime stats such as sexual assault and rape to rise over the coming months and years, not necessarily because there is more crime, but more victims (mostly women) feel it safer and more culturally acceptable to report crime compared to the past.

Yes, and we all know this is just the tip of the iceberg.

Seems quite insensitive to try to tell Japanese women & child victims they’re just being “dramatic”.

@jadefeldtophia

from a gay lesbian woman.

You mean there are lesbians that aren’t gay, and lesbians that aren’t women?!

Blimey, it more complicated than I thought. :o/

The latter paragraphs seems to be a jumble of stats ‘not-quite-so-clear’ on if it’s referring just to stalking, Domestic Violence or, a mixture of both?

The untold statistics of this bogus academic! Mental health and domestic violence!

-3 ( +2 / -5 )

Appears almost 38% of ‘these stalking cases chosen to beofficially documented’ by Japan’s police ’ involved persons previously ‘dated’ and, almost 19% by persons unfamiliar to the victim.

It’s best to have the rebuffed person CLEARLY understand***** that there is NO longer ANY interest:

NO ‘let’s just be friends’;

no more SNS access;

and definitely …

NO more late-night hook-ups, “sexu-friendo”, etc.

*(****plus, a third party discreetly* ‘witnessing” the final cessation conversation also adds to credibility IF there has to be a stalking report later. Take that friend to the koban with you.)

Additional demographics like “household income” & “fully-employed/part-time/unemployed” would provide credibility to generalizations like:

- “An NPA official in charge of compiling the data said the prolonged pandemic may have left more people trapped in situations of severe domestic violence.” -

… and shed more light if those “remote work” alleged surges did contribute to DV as well.
