translation: he didn’t pay the right bribes?

Why is a Japanese company choosing to run a business in Burma? Aeon should shut down all their business there and not support such a cruel so-called government.
My heart goes out to the Burmese people under such a regime.

In Many developing countries around the globe the prices of all ""Essential Supplies"" are set and tightly controlled by the authorities, Japan does it too to prevent monopolies and price gouging.
If Mr. Kasamatsu did not comply !? with these rules he could be facing stiff penalties and possibly jail time.
quercetum
Don’t they do that price gouging here with unagi?
Moonraker
Maybe he thought he was still in Japan.

Because the Japanese government has always supported the regime there. Japan doubled down on foreign investment during the heyday of the sanctions years.

.
What?
Can I believe my ears here?
Any foreigner accused of such a heinous crime in Japan would be in detention for several weeks whilst the NPA leisurely investigated.
Yoshimasa Hayashi should seek to avail himself of how such matters are conducted in Japan before demanding such liberal treatment from a foreign government.

In a logic world this would be a warning for companies that choose to do business in countries with this kind of governments, but probably profit is too much of a temptation so this will keep happening.

To demand “release him immediately” is not only rude but also contradicts own statement that “he’s being interrogated”

Price gouging goes on everywhere there is inflation. It's not just in the south east of Asia, but in the US and all the other countries with inflation. Corporate greed knows no law that prevents them from their unfair profits. This guy was an amateur, so he got caught, that's all.

In a place where people are dirt poor and depend on rice for food

@tigerjane
This supermarket was serving Japanese expatriates.

It's a food supplier, and for it to pull out of the country would likely hurt the very people to whom your heart goes out.
It's not going to help bring food prices down if Aeon were to leave, resulting in less competition in the market & thus even higher prices due to less supply.
daito_hak
Yeah exactly. The silly dude thought be could just inflate price and scam people like they do often here and that nobody would complain or will just go with it.

i am surprised to learn that law still exist in Myanmar nowadays
GuruMick
Rice crimes....how low can you go.
justasking
They should at least wait 23 days before they complain.

I’m be worked with many Japanese overseas and frankly speaking they act very differently. They often think local rules and culture don’t apply to them. The arrogance of so many i have met over the years is amazing. Of course there are amazing people also but just saying I have seen this kind of attitude before and it’s good they are locking him up.
piskian
This reminds me of a certain country's attitude towards SE Asian countries in a certain period of time not so long ago.
Lock him up,and fine AEON.

Which people are you speaking of? Do you believe the average Burmese person can afford Aeon's prices? Aeon is for those individuals who get above average pay. Aeon is supporting the Junta's agenda by paying inflated taxes and so on and if they and other countries would leave there is a chance for democracy.

"We... call on local authorities to release him immediately. We do this kind of thing in Japan all the time and it is never punished, and not even considered a crime. What you call 'price gouging' we call 'cooperation', and we encourage and reward it. The consumer does not mind at all! We ask to you, too, to please cooperate and release this man and let him sell the rice at increased cost."
Fixed it.

The Myanmar govt is a puppet of the ChiNazi CCP.
So I'm not surprised they'd go after Japanese businesses.

Given Japanese law allows the cops/prosecutors to hold people 23 days without charge I'm having a hard time feeling sorry here.
