Is the implication that these children, as the biological product of a Japanese father, would eventually be going to a biological mother who is also Japanese and who, for whatever reason, is unable to sustain a pregnancy, hence the need for the surrogate birth mother? This point isn't made clear in this article. Or is this Thai doctor running some kind of "baby mill" in which case these Thai women are hardly "surrogates"? And if this Japanese fellow is just a sperm donor, then he may have signed away his parental rights and responsibilities, so shouldn't be "criminalized" as the headline implies.

That's a lot of kids

I think this guy is trying to repopulate Japan... give him a ribbon!

-1 ( +8 / -10 )

Without more details, I have trouble believing this is surrogacy and not illegitimacy.

5 ( +6 / -1 )

I've read that some of the babies are caucasian in appearance.

The man visited Thailand 65 times since 2012.

Scumbag Australian couple.

I don't understand this article at all. This is by Reuters? Seems like they could write more clearly.

When he's filling out forms, contracts, etc., I wonder what he writes down under occupation?

The couple said they were told Gammy would not survive long. And now it is revealed he has heart trouble and a lung infection. So it sounds like they may be telling the truth. Also, they asked the surrogate to have an abortion when they found one of the twins had Downs, but she refused.

Well, since the press prefers to without information for the sake of sensationalism (truth be damned) lets think about this. They are Australians. They live in Australia. Can they take a baby with heart trouble on the plane back home? Sounds like a really bad idea.

Do they have the money to hang out in Thailand and wait for this poor baby to die? Probably not. Plus they have this other baby to care for.

I don't know the truth and I don't have all the answers. But the presumptions and INTENTIONAL withholding of details makes me angry.

They really outdid themselves this time without even explain what this Japanese man's supposed crime was. He might have no idea his sperm was used like this.

The news reports said the Japanese man was financially supporting these women. He obviously new what was going on.

He is not innocent!

As far as the Australian couple, he was charged with 22 cases of child abuse with girls under 10. He was also convicted of the same crime prior to the other 22 cases with girls under 7. He is and always be a scumbag!

Anyone trying to defend him or give me a thumbs down for this is probably one too!

The Japanese man was going back and forth on three passports (two Japanese and one Cambodian). He's only 24, and the son of a wealthy businessman. His name and identity have already been revealed on foreign news sites. Police suspect that he is heavily involved in human trafficking.

It has also been reported that there was one Japanese woman in the condominium.

Japan needs these! Do it for Japan!

Babies sales man ... I am pretty sure he is naturalized Japanese ...

-1 ( +1 / -2 )

How is this a "scandal"?

The babies have nannies, they're well-cared for, and presumably there are childless couples out there desperate to adopt them.

Stop moralising and give the man a medal....

This story confusing, another busy..ness business.

" " Japanese.businessman " ... I think everyone knows what kind of " business" corporation this " businessman" belongs to. "

No, everybody does not know that. Care to enlighten us?

OMG what a mess! A lot seems very seriously messed up!

That Australian couple should likely be finding themselves up on charges of abandonment!

And lets now forget all the Thai women that do this out of desperation, how sad!

-1 ( +0 / -1 )

Japanese news reports that about 20 million yen has been raised so far to take care of Gammy. That is a lot of money for Thailand, and he should be well taken care of.

Talk about deadbeat dads.

-3 ( +0 / -3 )

Why "naturalised Japanese"?

-1 ( +1 / -2 )

Waiting for the J-drama version.

-2 ( +0 / -2 )

His name and identity have already been revealed on foreign news sites

So, has the Japanese media made his and her names public. Or is this a case of being embarrassed by fellow-countrymen's antics, but hell, let's publicize the bad Australian gaijin couple's names and faces?

What did he write at immigration in Thailand for reason for entry?

Business or 'pleasure' ?

It says it was in in vitro fertilization clinic so don't let you imaginations run too far. But VERY scarily it is a fact that trafficking in babies and children is not always for adoption. There are as many weird and ruthless people out there as their are couple desperate to be parents. Not saying it was this Thai doctor's or the Japanese businessman's intention but I wonder if they really cared? Sooner they clear up who/where these babies destined were for the better, and also catch this piece of dirt and get him extradited back to Thailand.

Except this story is not about Gammy.

I disagree that there is anything "obvious" about this case. How about waiting until we actually get some more facts?

(redacting mine)

Appears the guy is really wealthy, if he is the person of same name who owns 1.44 pct of a Japanese telecom company controlled by another person with same last name, this second person being no. 11 on Forbes list of Japan's 50 richest, this second person owning 48.5 pct of the telecom company.

Looks like he wasn't doing it for the money, especially.

Isn't the headline, "Japanese businessman fathered 13 surrogate babies in Thailand", a bit premature? Have the DNA tests already been done and the results announced?

from Pukey2's link

then who are the mothers?

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Good question. The surrogate mothers are apparently Thai. The egg donors could be Thai or Japanese (or any).

According to Japanese news blog waowaowao.com the motive could have been tax avoidance. According to Japanese tax law, he can give a certain amount of inheritance to his foreign children tax-free, but he would have to have 1660 foreign children to be able to give them 10B yen inheritance tax-free. His 1.44 pct of the company was worth 4.8B yen at August 8th close of market, presumably he has more resources than that. Seems a bit farfetched to go to that trouble for tax avoidance, though.

Sometimes health care workers generate lots of children by replacing sperm donations surreptitiously with their own ("sometimes" = I read of at least one case in last several years). This guy doing it legally but he has a lot more money to supply his habit.

For example, in the case of Japanese donors are living abroad in the tax laws of our country, heir of the children and grandchildren have been living abroad for a long period of time and foreign nationals, only domestic property is taxable, foreign property are exempt.

As of this time, Japanese men of wealthy if you make a lot of children of Thai nationality, so that you and granting foreign assets. ...

... 685,500 shares of optical communication (1.44%), market capitalization based on the closing price of the August 8 is about 4.8 billion yen.

By the way, if you estimated tax laws of our country, to inheritance tax-free, the cash assets of 10 billion yen, if there was a spouse, number of children is 1660 people, If there is no spouse, things need 1661 people .
