You don't need a visa to stay in jail. Wouldn't that be a great loophole 'Oh, my visa expired. I guess you'll have to let me out'.
Alfie Noakes
It's revealing that this has made the Japanese media when the case of Takehiko Ogawa, the rapist recently jailed for 11 years in London, was studiously ignored here. One can only imagine that Nomura has more pull in the domestic media than Optex.

@darknuts - that's not the timeline at all, it takes time for a case to work through from arrest to guilty plea/conviction/sentencing.
He was arrested back in November, within a few days of the incident.

They can't put him away for 7 1/2 years, he'll overstay his visa. Although, I'm happy he is getting such a harsh sentence, I wonder what he'd have gotten if prosecuted in Japan?
Maria
Bastard. I hope he does the full term, and it still won't be long enough.
Alexandre T. Ishii
His visa will be extended the whole time he is staying the US "hospitality" inside the bars. He deserves to stay there and much more in Japan to learn what is a prison life + the culture differences between them.

I hate to break it to some people here but the US and Japan are signatories to prisoner transfer treaties that are designed to facilitate better rehabilitation of offenders. This guy will more than likely apply to serve his sentence in Japan and the request will be granted.
oldman_13
I hope he has fun in an American prison.
kawabegawa198
He probably thought he would get off, as he would have done if tried by a Japanese court.
pudus
well he has US felony under his belt...
smithinjapan
Glad he was caught and imprisoned in he US and not here.
albaleo
I think his name was Takehiko Ogihara. Oddly, the case didn't seem to get much coverage in the UK either.
Luddite
Not long enough.
DaDude
Guess they will have to put him in Guantanamo Bay.
Disillusioned
I think 7 years is pretty light for such a horrible crime. He'll be out of jail in his early 50's, but she will have to live with it for the rest of her life.
Toasted Heretic
I hope he serves the full term. What gives anyone the right to do this kind of thing? Horrible.
Scrote
If you know the right people you won't even be arrested in Japan, never mind prosecuted.
Ah_so
That works both ways...I bet there are more Americans in Japanese jails than the other way round. Such an arrangement would be financially advantageous to the Japanese.
Luddite
I read about it in several newspapers.
darknuts
So the rape happened last November and the police only now arrested him and just as he was about to board a plane and leave town. An interesting timeline for these events. I wonder if he knew they were coming for him.

7 and a half years in prison in a foreign land. That must be tough. But he’ll probably be released on parole after serving a couple of years and deported to Japan. Then he will walk free since he’s served long enough in a US prison.
quercetum
Why didn’t he just say he was drunk?
juminRhee
Can't the Japanese govt pay for this? Extradite directly into a Japanese prison and let them handle the funding. Too many people crowding American jails...
