Moral of the story: If you visit China, stay with your tour group unless you want some free 're-education'.

If you take a smartphone with a GPS to China, you are violating Chinese laws. Beware.

The man, who has not been named, previously worked for the National Institute for Defense Studies in the defense ministry and the Japanese foreign ministry

Yeah. And he might be an actual spy too. Everybody does have spies you know, even Japan.

It would help if there was a statement denying the accusation that he is a spy.

Missing from the report us the fact he is only out on Bail, AND that he had confessed to unspecified crime against the state. It is likely tge Japanese government will forfeit bail and advise he shouldn't return to China to face trial.

Moral of the story, even if you were invited to go to China by a Chinese institution, don't. This professor was invited by a Chinese academic institution, but he didn't even get to make his speech before he was arrested.

Everybody uses GPS in China. It may be "against the law," but in China (and increasingly other countries, such as the US) everything and anything can be made illegal. Never enforced unless they want an excuse to lock you up. In which case, they will certainly find some law you have broken, no matter how careful you are.
