Singapore takes their laws seriously. No playing around with them. It's even written on your landing card. Remember back in the day with the American high school student Michael Fay, who was caned for vandalism?

Good. He deserves more punishment, but this is a start.

I hope those 17 years are long and it breaks him. Singapore Changi prison is brutal and notorious, it is not unknown for inmates to be bashed. So all in all it will suit this scum very well.

Sorry, what? It's a clean, well organized, orderly city-state with a very low crime rate.

What would qualify as a "modern" city in comparison? Something like Los Angeles or San Francisco -- whose downtown areas and public transport systems are teeming with violent felons and homeless drug addicts?

"I hate to be judgmental" -- and then proceeds to post a racist-against-Japanese-people comment. The sort of comment that would never be tolerated here on Japan Today if it were about pretty much any other ethnic or national group. Well, except maybe white people.

Singapore is among Southeast Asian countries that use caning as a punishment.

Why not?

I love the way Singapore goes about the business of punishing people who commit heinous crimes: no messing around. That cane is no joke; slow and very painful.

The case happened in 2019 and he's being sentenced in 2024? He was apprehended later that day. ... and initially charged in May 2023.

That seems like a pretty long time to pull the case together, especially if the guy recorded his own crime!

I have just read a similar story in the New Paper in Singapore. A young man who raped and SA his very young sister was given 18yrs in prison and 24 strokes of the cane, he also had 2 older brothers who did the same, they were handed down similar sentences. Having read and seen pictures of how the caning is done, it is just horrible, and what is even better, if the culprit shoud pass out after, say, 23 instead of 24 strokes, an extra one year is added to his sentence. Singapore justice does not take prisoners....

Filming his rape session to boast to his friends is characteristic of the Japanese. University students in Japan do this but are often able to settle out of court with victims and their family averse to enduring the shame further.

Singapore is not a Malay nation or a Chinese nation. Neither is it an Indian nation. In order to maintain a place of equal language, culture and religion, authoritarian discipline is necessary.

This aspect of the punishment is Chinese in nature. The recipient needs to feel fully the pain from the caning and being unconscious renders the whipping useless.

According to the Singaporean court, caning is only imposed on male offenders under the age of 50. The maximum number of strokes that can be administered at once is 24

quercetum, after reading the additional information you provided from the Asahi it makes more sense why the harsh and clearly deserved sentence. The girl he raped she will have to live with that forever, and the caning he receives he too will live with that forever and anything less he could escape with little memory of his criminal act.

I hear that the caning in Singapore is designed to be particularly painful.

Too bad caning is limited to the buttocks. For his heinous crime, he should be caned elsewhere. I've heard people describe it as being excruciating, like being branded with a hot iron each stroke. He deserves it.
